His voice is so amazingly soothing; there is something about him using "she" instead of "he" that just hits me in a way I don't understand

First time I've heard him or any male sing this. Astounding. It just occurred to me that what makes songs like this so great in part is that they allow the human singing voice (of great singers) to express itself to its maximum possibilities. They are vehicles for allowing the full and complete expression of magnificent human voices. Thoughts?

Ruthie Henshall, then Susan Boyle. This ballad isn't made for a male voice. While I love Michael Ball's voice, this isn't suited for him. His rendition didn't have the emotional impact of Ruthie Henshall's in the 10th anniversary production.

Susan! I think her cover is so emotional and heartbreaking. This version sounds a little too much like lounge-act...almost too happy sounding. He is very talented though! I just think this song should be gut wrenching and Susan's version has that emotion.

Not at all, actually. Would have been actually pretty cool if they didn't. Gay men are certainly not exempted from life's hardship, and the cult of youth is pretty harsh there, so it would have been quite meaningful. Hopefully, other male singers will pick it up...

@@astrophe-cat First, he's not gay. Second, a lot of men have sung this song including Ramin Karimloo, Alfie Boe and Hadley Fraser, to name a few. It would be a bit strange for them not to switch the lyrics.

@Anjelica Snorcket I agree that it's a personal choice. The men I've heard sing it have all gender -swapped the lyrics. Maybe it's a generational thing that they did not see the need to make singing the song a statement of some sort about gender equality. I also agree the 10th Anniversary version is the best. Michael singing it is lovely but a bit unbelievable. After all, can you imagine anyone leaving him that way? :)

@Anjelica Snorcket Agreed. I think every singer wants to interpret the songs they sing in a way that feels right to them. If they aren't really connected to a song, it shows and often falls flat.

@@ilsaruthen5478 I hope that one day, it will not be considered "strange" when singers of different sex/gender use the original version, without adjusting the lines. Regardless of whether it would be because of how they identify oersonally, or whether they simply play the fictional role of that song.

His voice is like melted chocolate, so smooth. But I don’t think it’s a good match for this particular song.

I love Michael Ball and his voice. And of course love 'Les Misérables'. But this song and it's lyrics, just does not lend itself for being sung by a male performer with adjusted lyrics. It's a "victim's" narrative...which sadly fitted and applied to a woman who was robbed of her virtue (getting pregnant out of wedlock) BUT keeps on dreaming of a happier ending....💔

I hate the regendering here. Normally, I'm just irritated, but the theme of the song is the abuse she, as a poor woman, has to go through and how low she sunk because a man left here. It's critical of society for treating women as if they had no worth without a man in their life as much as it's yearning for lost love. THIS is just the last part. And I hate it.

Yeah, I couldn't feel nearly as bad for a man sad that his girlfriend left as I could for a woman who was left pregnant and alone and forced into prostitution. His voice is beautiful, but there's no way a woman could ruin a man in the same way. This is a woman's song.

His voice is amazing but he's really lacking in emotion. This particular song MUST be sung while crying

I've never heard him sing before, that I know of, and now that I have I'm not so much a fan. Reminds me of Tom Jones, who is also a fine singer, just not my style.
