To mark the arc in a long piece, set the two nails as shown. Then tie a string between them, loose enough that a pencil pressing against it in the middle just touches the closer edge of the wood, move the pencil along the string from end to end and you'll get a nice symmetric arc.

@@davidbroadfoot1864 Same for the ellipse. Just tie one end of the string to a nail, stretch out the string towards the other nail, push the middle of the string out to the edge you want with your pencil, make a couple wraps around the other nail and tie off with a clove hitch. :)

Rubber bands, so simple yet so effective. You can probably make a whole video on the uses of rubber bands in the shop.

Instead of tape, use your jack plane to take shavings off each side from the middle to give your cauls the desired arc. Another good video, James. Thanks for the rubber band trick and thanks for sharing.

I'm just about to build a small dressing table for my wife and had forgotten I might end up with a bowed slab after gluing 3 strips together. This is exactly what I needed to see! Not only has it reassured me I will reduce or eliminate the curve (hopefully), but if I hadn't seen this video, I'd have no way to fix it as I'm not too experienced in carpentry yet and the idea of planing by hand is daunting . Thank you for a great video.

Interestingly enough, a few weeks ago I watched a video using the same principle, only applied to soldering metal! The reason was metal expands and contracts when heat is applied or removed (usually just to the edges of the piece), therefore this sort of alignment helped keeping the final product straight. Cross-field principles are really useful to learn!

Lazy me, I went to the big boxes near my h o use and picked out the scrap marked for disposal. You know, the rocking horse rails generally sold as studs, but too outrageous for even their conscience. Ran lag bolts on one end, carriage bolts on the other, pulled them flat, worked out pretty good for a po'boy!

Here is a tip: Use metallic duct tape on your cauls so they do not stick to the glue on the panel.

That Aluminum foil tape used in HVAC? Nice I’ll have to try that.

I like the custom cauls idea with the cut-outs. That said, I put tape over the caul at the the glue seams - which allows me to remove the tape and reposition the glue seam locations for different glue ups. I can then reuse my cauls indefinitely for a wide range of panel glue ups.

I build a lot of miniature furniture for Barbie sized figures and I typically use rubber bands more than I use clamps when gluing up cabinet boxes. It allows me to get my 23 guage nailer in exactly the right spot to nail everything together.

If I need the profiled caul, I'll sometimes just choose a 2x4 with s natural crook.

I know you've shared the blue paint tip before, but i appreciate seeing it again. It's easier for me to remember these quick tips when they're fresh in my video feed.

I made curved cauls with a jointer. Just joint form the middle to each end, then from the next joint tot he end and so on. Set the jointer for a fairly heavy cut and you get a nice faceted curve. Don't forget the packing tape. Put bolts in each end and tighten them with an impact driver and a deep socket.

I do similar. As you say, jointer to make about 1/32nd per 4" length on 4x2. Some 1/2" threaded rod at each end and plastic tape on the glue side of the caul. As you say, re-usable and cheap

Great idea, I use Hand Screws with wax paper on the ends, in the middle I use wedges and 3/4" pipe clamps. It worked fine on glue ups for 2" Mahogany stair treads. Since it was a curved stair I glued up 2 treads together then sliced them after the glue up.

I use cooking sufurized paper under the cauls to prevent glue from sticking to them.

Maybe I've just been sniffing too much Titebond 3 today, but the panel you're making at 1:00 is giving me little fluttering feelings in my chest. I'm not normally a dark wood fan, but that is gorgeous.

I'm literally walking out of lowes with new clamps in my hand as I get the notification for this video. Lol! Great tips!

The tape in the middle is a great idea.

I've made some pretty heavy duty cauls by taking a piece of straight hardwood, bowing it, then cutting a straight line on the now concave side. Pop it out of the bowing jig and you have a perfect curve with some serious clamping power in the middle of span. I have one that does a 48" wide panel.

love that Pentel .9 mechanical pencil I'm a .7 man myself, but I do love the .9

Those purple rubber bands they bundle asparagus with come in handy.

I did the same thing but just cut some slight angles in my caul with my tapering jig for my table saw and sanded the middle a bit to get a curve. They work great. I keep a layer of blue tape over the edge because wood glue doesn’t stick to it much so I do t bother cutting out the arcs to go over the seams.

I used to use cauls. Now I use a dowler (drills 2 holes at a time). This also allows me to make panels that fit through my planer, then have an easy method of joining the 13 inch wide sections into much wider panels. Also, they are vastly less expensive than a domino.

I cut strips of baking sheet/paper and run them under the cauls.

I have a pretty good collection of cauls I've made in a few standard sizes. Once you make one, you can screw blanks to it and use a template bit in a router table to copy the pattern to the blank. Ash is a wood that works well for me for making cauls. Personally, I just scrape the glue off afterwards, but tape would be good.

Neat idea. I mostly build fine furniture and do a lot of panel glue ups. I opted for a set of Frontline clamps. I’d give up my Domino before I gave up my clamps :)

i remember seeing (i think) paul sellers making cauls like that, by walking a plane back to the middle of the board step by step, starting on the outside. so, just plane away a small bit on the outside of a board, then start further to the middle of the board and do a pass, then keep going till you reach the middle. that gives you a gentle bow really quickly. finish it up with packing tape so glue doesnt stick and you are good.

Perfect, I am building kitchen cabinets 16 cabinets. My wife loves flat panel slab doors, which is the new trend. Clean and simple. was planning on using 3/4x6 maple and glue them up using your process. Would love to hear your take on the maple. I have read a lot about bowing and cupping when using no panel and just slab hardwood for doors. Thoughts please??

Why not use weights? I like to use kettlebells from the fitnessshop for this for this. That way you can apply pressure without clamps. Or at least in places where the clamp can't reach.

Mr. Nubs, regarding that PPE tip at the end, don't those baseball cap edgings interfere with the seal between the ear guard and scalp - check how much hearing damaging noise leaks in and let us know whether that's a safe practice.

It depends on how soft the ear pads are, and also upon how low the sides of the cap are compared to your ears. I have no issues with these.

I keep a supply of girls pony tail and head bands. They are much sturdier than rubber bands. The pony tail bands come in larger quantities and both sizes are very inexpensive.

I'm getting from this video that using cauls is the best method. However for perhaps smaller projects can you get close to this result using biscuits for allignment? I use them for larger cutting boards and generally don't have to do much sanding at all to get a flat top.

Biscuits definitely help align the seams, but they do not keep the panel flat as clamps are applied. That said, smaller items like cutting boards, which are typically made from thicker materials may not bow at all if you don't apply too much clamping pressure. Cauls are for when you need them, not necessarily for every project.

They would be better than nothing, but you won't get good clamping force in the middle. Unless you can get another clamp to reach from the other direction. So only useful on the ends, really.

Three truisms in life: As long as you can close your workshop/garage door... 1) ...you can never have too many clamps, and... 2) ...you can never have too many disc golf discs, and... 3) ...you can always beg your wife/SO for forgiveness for buying more of either. :)

Once you’ve got the strip nailed on could you just run a router against it to create the curve instead of marking it and freehanding it with a saw?

The strip isn't nailed on. It's just bent, and it's not nearly stiff enough to be a template.

7mm each side over a 30cm span as a guideline. ( +/- 2mm) If you’re using thick material you’ll have to adjust to suit.

No, but it has changed over the years, and sometimes I reuse older clips in new videos. I also shoot from different places in the shop, like the table saw area, etc.
