Actually, they started off as bonding as friends and "brothers". It wasn't until he found out she was a woman was when he felt betrayed that his "brother" lied and deceived him by bringing dishonor to him and his father since he was the one in charge of all his "men" and in that place/time of that culture dishonoring a man and his pride was tarnishing his everything and his name. Even the show has made that abundantly clear. It wasn't until later on in the movie when Mulan came back trying to warn everyone about the Hans and fight for China again with her army comrades that she reminded Shi Lang that "Ping" was not only her all along, but reminds him of whom she really is as a person alone, not as "Ping" but how honorable she is in her character other than the cultural ideal boundaries, walls, and image of what a woman should be like, but that "we're all Fighting for China" as just like the emperor Said, "even a sign rice can tip the scale." She shows her honor in her duty, sacrifice, hard-work, mind, and in what she can do in the place of others in which she fights for by heart, bravery, and strength. She shows the embodiment of what being a woman is truly like, and in how to show honor in what she's fighting and what she stands for through that in which is her true sense of character. Li Shang fell in love with that about her and in what she can bring in others together as a team. It wasn't until the end of the movie when he had developed feelings for her other than comradery, which is why at the end he asked if he could come for "dinner".

For me it's purely if you want to read deeper into a few frames of animation. When "Ping" is the first to reach the top of the pole, and Shang comes out of his tent in the morning and looks up and sees him, and the way the smile on his face looks. (Is it just pride or deeper adoration?) Or, the way he grins when Ping bests him in 1-on-1 fighting and gets him on the ground and then Shang strokes his chin thoughtfully as he smiles. Is he just thinking of pride or is he thinking of Ping in that way? (Which doesn't have to be romantic it could just be physical attraction)

@@Allison_Hart it's the fact that you're thirsting for Shang 😂 men and even women who are leaders can feel pride, adoration, and proud of the people that they are teaching, especially the underdogs that you didn't think would ever reach to the top, and that is exactly how Shang felt towards Ping. He felt proud of him for the growth he had as a person, he admired that, and in what he was capable of doing only to be put into action. Projecting your own internal monologue to pervert something that's completely innocent is on you, not the story/character/animation/person. People can feel proud and admiration towards others in their accomplishments and growth without having romantic feelings for them or any perversion. Men can feel this in his brotherhood, and women can feel this in their sisterhood without being gay, just the same way as we feel with our friends, colleagues, and family.
