Looking forward to a year from now when about 70% of the people saying this game is great turning around and coming to my point of view and realizing it was pretty trash. It seems to happen with about 90% of the things I say. I say something - take loads of shit for it from people - then about a year afterwards they're finally saying the thing I said. Enjoy New Super Mario Party Bros in all of it's tiny 4 boards glory. Gotta love that rhythm mode too, it's definitely not just 10 basic minigames of waggle. Also that river rafting mode is great - 10 minigames and replaying some of them in one round is totally okay. NdCube you have finally redeemed yourself. el oh el.

That's fair, but I don't think it does so good to state opinions so matter-of-factly. People can like games for a lot of their own reasons, it doesn't really matter how objective you wanna look at it. I totally understand your opinions and see where you're coming from and I agree with a lot of them, but I don't think it's fair to discredit people with different opinions, at least the people that are respectful about it.

Admittingly, I liked the car at first, but it wasn't until I played the Boo Haunted House board in MP9, that I started to realize how poorly designed the car was. The way I look at it, "Bowser Party" I'd say is the best use of the car as all of them traveling on one linear path to get away from Bowser makes sense. The only thing I'd fix would be removing Bowser's ability to re-roll if he can't catch up to the other four. That way it would be more fair.

That was actually a good Mario party. I remember going on a family road trip that was really boring but me and my siblings all brought our DSs. We stopped at a mall and picked that game up and played it during the rest of the trip. Fun times

People are caught up in the fact that this is “a return to form!”. It is WAY overhyped right now. I feel all the reviewers are comparing it only the recent games, so they think this is miles better than any other ones, thus the high scores. This game is very mediocre at best. Only things I like about this game are the animations, mini games, and that it’s a SLIGHT step in the right direction.

@@TheBitBlock you seem not to know, that NDcube is kind of hudson soft. The leader of Hudson is the leader since 2010 or 2011 of ndcube. Since Hudson fused with another studio from konami, most or at least some of them switched to ndcube, even the leader, producing mario party 9 and so on. This means those bad partys are still from old devs and their leader is also from hudson☹😥

If only you spoke Japanese so the devs could actually understand this video.

Everyone knows the game is lacking. It's just making the best of a bad situation perhaps. But there's still some fun to be had. The game has set up the foundation for a really great game, but everything just doesn't quite make it. Mostly due to lack of content / mini games. River Rapids is fun....for bout two times. Then it gets really repetitive due to only having 10 mini games, so it's a quick distraction. This applies for most side modes. The main mode, only has 4 boards, and has some issues with balancing and in-game economy. So, even if the mini games were mind blowingly awesome, 4 small boards would still get boring quicker than usual. So as it is, its a fun game, and I'd say it's not the worst Mario Party. But it certainly isn't as good as it perhaps should have been.

What I love about Josh is that he is a CRITICAL GAMER. He isn’t just appeased by anything or because he loves Nintendo, which I truly appreciate as I myself think similarly. A lot of people these days are not critical anymore, they don't question things in life as much, you have to always be acceptive of everything or otherwise you hurt someone's feelings, as they cannot cope with the fact that someone else would not like the same things and therefore have a very critical stance against it. So many people never even had to watch this video, let alone comment, but they just cannot control how upset they are, how dare someone comes off as condescending for not giving a fuck about you liking the game. To even turn it into a big deal he said people have low standards for liking this. lol This is so hilarious to me, they never had to take any of his words serious, they could have simply moved on with their day, in certainty they do not have low standards when it comes to games, but they know the truth, they are just in denial, blinded and would do anything to defend this game, for whatever reason it is. I mean once again, they don't have to agree with this review, they don't have to like it or watch it or leave a comment, they don't need to alter it and try to change his opinion by being hateful. But all in all I completely agree that people have rather low standards when it comes to games, if they blindly accept this game as it is, like go ahead enjoy it, but you don't have to be in denial about how unfinished this is, even big streamers on twitch said the same stuff, they had fun, but they were not in denial about anything. It's like with sims 4, I find people to have rather low standards to just accept the game as it is, the ea money grab, the limitations, the small places, like to me it's just a downgrade of previous versions and a blatant money grab, but people defend it by saying stuff like every blinded hardcore fanboy would: "YOU ARE SO RUDE FOR SAYING THAT!!" "The devs put SO MUCH effort into this!" "Try and make a game yourself! I bet it would suck!" "I have fun with this game for 30 minutes out of the day, so therefore your negative opinion is invalid!" This is exactly the reason why we that grew up with gaming, since the days back then, have to deal with lack of content, because you find these little zombie fanboys buying into literally everything, especially their favourite franchise or title that came out, but it comes out unfinished with tons of dlc on day one already and a ingame shop for cosmetics and other items. But hey we live in a world where critical thinking is negative and bad and we as customers are not suppose to criticize something we don't appreciate and like and where we feel being taken advantage of, because this is our money we invest in. Reviews like this, is what we currently need as the gaming market gets worse and more corrupt, think of it as an experienced advise and not taking offense, when someone says in general and not attacking someone personally, that people that buy into this shit everytime have low standards when it comes to gaming, because it's the truth. You are the problem that makes lack of content creations exist, you are the reason that even our favourite companies do it now as well, eventhough we've had respected them in the past.

I don’t get it. Why are they half-assing these games? The Switch is making money now, so putting in more effort is justified. Even if they did only 4 boards why are they so uncreative with the designs? Have they lost all creativity? Or are they told they can’t stray from what the higher ups say? This is really getting unacceptable, especially if they use a half-finished game to push DLC. Doesn’t matter if it’s free because it’s a way to sell their paid online. Honestly after this I think I’m done with their smaller spinoffs like this (Mario Kart and Smash are on their own level). They’re clearly not putting in the effort anymore for some reason and there’s no point wasting money on it. It’s unfortunate, but hopefully they’ll stop crapping out subpar games. All of those Wii U ports selling better than their original copies for a fraction of the price should be enough to supplement these smaller games to a higher (or former) status.

Just because you're enjoying it doesn't mean it's half-assed. You can enjoy just about anything with friends. I'm sure it's decent fun but it has less content and effort put into it than any other console Mario Party. There are legitimate criticisms to be made. Let them be heard and maybe we can get a better (or for you even better) game. That's why it even returned to the normal style because people made their voices heard and Nintendo listened. Going by Josh's points, he IS looking at what's there. The boards are a huge part of the game yet there's very few of them (the smallest amount for the console series), they're small, have very little to do, uninteresting themes, the layouts lack variety (they're all uniformly square), and there's no tension to getting a star because the bar is set too low. It's marketed as a return to the series' roots and but misses out on a lot of things that make them great. Let me guess, you're the same type of person that says "don't complain" but then complained because they made Metroid Prime: Federation Force? Even though it was obviously a spin-off and it wasn't going to supersede the actual mainline games.

That's the point- looking at what IS there and there's not much 😒😒. Nintendo games lately have a sense of fun but that "fun" barely lasting a few hours at most (Mario tennis aces anyone?). I'm a sonic the hedgehog fan and I have fun playing '06, secret rings and forces. All three of them are either half assed, incomplete or both, but i get enjoyment out of them. I also am a silent hill fan and like some of the non main series games in it like origins and homecoming. I can admit to enjoying low quality games but can still enjoy them just as you can with super mario party. My point is, you can have fun with something half assed, but at least understand that a vocal majority might not enjoy it for very valid reasons. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

Too many people are getting butt hurt with these reviews on Mario Party this guy is giving a full honest review he's not just giving you 10 to 14 minutes he's talking about everything from start to finish on top of that he's giving us 39 minutes and 41 seconds of his time away from life to basically give an honest opinion or critique on a game that people are still getting butt hurt when you say the game is not all that great

It would have been cool if they based the boards on Mario odyssey levels

You bring up a lot of good criticisms about the game, some of which are indefensible. I think people are so quick to defend Super Mario Party because it has been so long since we've had a good Mario Party game. Sure, Super Mario Party is a step toward the classics we know and love, but they botched so many things that it almost doesn't matter. It's a small step toward being like the classics and it seems like Nintendo only did that begrudgingly, judging by how half-assed the classic Mario Party mode is. Same goes for the online mode. It's the best Mario Party in 6 years, but unfortunately that's not saying much.

Nintendo can absolutely do better, but people act like the older MPs were fantastic games where not many improvements could be made. Which is so wrong as the older MPs are a mess in terms of balance, fairness and mini-games. SMP does a good number of things to fix this, so despite of its many flaws, it's still a better MP game in the classic style than any of the N64/GC ones.

ARC Well, not in the video, but rather the comments section, plus we aren't mad at him for having negative opinion on the game, that's perfectly fine by us, the reason we got angry with him is because he's calling us all out that like the game, saying that we have low standards and are just desperate to love the Switch. He's treating his opinion like it's fact and everyone should revolve around his opinion. He was just kind of being an ass about it in the comments, which is why we all got so pissed with him, it isn't very nice to judge people by their viewpoints.

Danbo 22 sure, some people find it fun, and a lot of other reviewers agree, but what about the rest of us who thought this was genuinely boring. Josh is speaking on behalf of us who didn’t like the game.

The fact people even try to compare this game to the great Hudson Soft Mario Party games as if it's up in those Ranks, is beyond my comphrension. It's not a terrible game but it's so half assed and unfinished though.

Pacific Fun like I said it's not a terrible game, I actually played it with friends, so it's much better not playing alone. It was a step in the right direction so hopefully they will improve on it next iteration

You say the items are good, and the concepts are fine, but they’re so unbalanced. A golden pipe should be at least double a star imo...

There are some changes I'd make to make the balance perfect: - Add an item that can steal partners - Make the stars worth 20 coins and the pipes worth 30 - Make the partner rolls include 0s to make it more balanced Plus 2 or 3 more boards would be nice. That's all I need for the game to be the definitive Mario Party. Most of the gameplay changes are great, like the character dice and the reduction of unnecessary elements.

it costs baically just as much as the magic lamp in mario party 3 , maybe what you want is it to cost like 20 to replicate it in 2 and 4 (costing 30 for the lamp), it is thankfully not as broken as the star pipe in ds (15 coins for the pipe) except for the fact star pipes have a random lilkeliness to appear in shops as oposed to SMP where it always appears in a set shop

More like they set a course from Point A to Point D and completely skimmed over B and C, resulting in a puzzle piece with a few pieces missing.

I'm looking at this game as more of a "introduction", and am looking at it as the first step in a line of great new Mario Parties. This game is basically a reboot. It is lacking in a lot of places, but I feel like now that they are on the right track they will only go up from here. Mario Party 2 is seen by many to be one of the best Mario party games. What if Super Mario Party 2 is the same?

I am so happy that you talked about the overall pace and speed of the game when playing the board games. Reading all of the reviews out there made me feel like I was the only one who was feeling that. It is a huge problem and one that I noticed right away when the first option was 10 turns and it said it would take an hour. This whole game is mediocre in every aspect but the overall speed makes it not even worth playing at all. I'm not going to force myself to play this game just because it is new when there are legit just better Mario Party games out there.

I be happy if they had 80 mini games online, I wouldn’t mind boards not being playable online.

I have an idea for a game board, tell me if it's good or not... Solar System: All 8 planets have a medium sized board on them. At the start, each player picks a planet(4players, 4planets) and each player can traverse freely between them. At the end of however many turns there were, everyone jumps to Pluto, and gets one last final turn, for an opportunity to get a couple extra stars. It's just a basic idea I had

I kinda think it's stupid, but it sounds more or less sound like Wario's board from Mario Party 1 and Goomba's board from Mario Party 4, so it's ok I guess.

So I found this game to be a lot of fun personally. Maybe I have some rose colored glasses on because we get playable Bowser and the stupid car is gone. All of these points are legit. A big solution to much of your complaints would be the option to change more game settings, turn off allies, adjust star cost, etc. Add some more boards and mini games, fix the online, you’d fix most of these issues. Great video

Why isn't Boom Boom in the game? I also don't like how Nintendo made Birdo unplayable and she's just someone who gives you stickers. I like the game, but my favourite Mario party was 8.

Honestly, I'm kinda okay with them choosing Pom Pom over Boom Boom. Boom Boom has always been such a boring design, where as I feel Pom Pom kinda has more going for her with the whole ninja motif. I do agree that they should have brought back Birdo though.

We're paying the most for Nintendo games than ever before and we're getting less than ever before. With some exceptions obviously. Yet people just still blindly buy it. I see people post about stuff on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit expecting stuff to change when the harsh reality is Nintendo doesn't check that subreddit. Vote with your wallets people!

Yeah, some of the subsidiaries of Nintendo, like Camelot and NDCube, really seem to be working on tight budgets or very limited time constraints. And instead of Nintendo releasing these game at budget prices, they just slap a $60 price tag on them. Aces and Super, while not bad, definitely feel like they were rushed out. The developers are capable of more but I think they just need more time. Just look how amazing Mario Golf World Tour turned out after Nintendo gave Camelot more time to develop it.

@@Retrosys OP is likely talking about a dollar to content ratio. More money for less content is how it is right now. Even with Zelda. The Switch version was a 1:1 port of an unfinished game that had cut and unimplemented content because the Switch wouldn't have had a game at launch otherwise.

The quick Mario Party 9 remark further proves how underrated the game is. People just look at the cars and turn the game off rather than looking at the mini-games, actually playing the party mode, and also trying the side modes.

I think with a little more effort this game could be as good as Mario Party 1-8. I do not think it is bad, but it falls short in terms of content. It is a improvement removing the group car though.

It was an early time for motion controls, they were pretty much discovering them. AND THAT STUPID FREAKING MONKEY GAME THAT IS RIGGED SO THAT THE AI ALWAYS WINS. Anyway, these motion controls have at least improved a little.

In Mario Party DS, the DK Stone Statue board has the same thing where there are spaces on the top 2 rows of the board and a big barrel comes and squashes you and you lose 10 coins

Whomp's Domino Plains is basically a smaller version of Mario Party's DK's Jungle Adventure board as they both are jungle-themed boards features Whomps that move when you pay them and rolling boulders.

You made many good relatable points! I've said this before but I wish more people would appreciate design aspects of games like you do. You notice things that others don't.

I think they really could have been onto something with the ally mechanic, especially with the special dice blocks and the fact that some of the minigames even incorporate your allies. Building your team for the minigames could have been really fun, almost like a Mario Party Double Dash, but most of the time one player ends up with several allies (unfair af btw) and no one else seems to get any. Also the special blocks become useless once you have allies because all planning on where to land with them goes out the window when you get random 1's and 2's from allies. As it is it's just another Mario party with a couple tiny tweaks.

Does this game have handicap? I remember you could make certain players only start with a few stars at the start of the game which I found a good option for less experienced players like parents who never play video games and are confused.

I hate that Boulder thing so much. The COM always fucking landed on it when I was playing and when I say it kept landing on it I mean IT LANDED ON IT FOR 5 GOD DAMN TURNS. It made it so unenjoyable.

The ally characters also help you in some mini games. Its absurd, landing on the space is such a huge advatnage

I was really excited that they were "going back to their roots" and this is a step in the right direction, but so many of these things just bug me... - Hidden Blocks ARE bs, and putting those back is just eh. - Ally characters are an awesome idea, I love having more dice for a little strategy, but the allies adding to your roll is really not something I like. - The online being as mediocre as possible. - Stars for only 10 coins as you said don't make them feel as valuable. - Only 10 or so mini games actually look interesting. And the biggest problem... - The boards being absolute shit, and only having 4. So much was going on in all the boards in the previous games, these are so bland. I have played all the mario party games but I only own 2 and 8, I think I'll just purchase all of the gamecube Mario Party games instead. This game is a real let down.

How do you miss opportunity to have odyssey based boards? New donk city is begging to be a board with a Pauline happing space, a mecha wiggler hazard or maybe even some classic donkey Kong stuff

I see where you're coming from now. Your points are quite valid. I think you should actually work for Nintendo and design the next Mario Party because I think your ideas would actually work! Great job on this one.

I think the boards are small because of the low rolling basic die, Only goes up to 6. granted there are special die that roll higher but not the basic ones

Allies are broken too. On some mini games, they can join the person that has them. I was playing against a waluigi cpu that had two allies with him on that mini game with with the rolling spike ball. Waluigi died before I did, but when he did, his allies stayed in the game so basically he had 3 lives

Bowser should NOT be a playable Character. A significant part of Mario Party Boards was the many ways Bowser could mess with you for simply not being a part of the party.

I know this has nothing to do with the video, but what is the status of those make believe projects you were making? The b-roll looked amazing!

Mario party 6 and 7 had mic minigames, but you could disable them if you just wanted to use controllers. Why couldn't super mario party let you disable motion control minigames

I will just unpack my dusty(still working) N64 and enjoy playing Mario Party 64 with my friends. That game has so much replay ability.

hidden block are also in mario party 4 and 5 and in 4 they still give you stars in 5 they only give you 10 coins and from mp6 onwards they are removed

Well i mean at least it's back on right path, but I hope they make big deal with next mario party with better board designs, modes, and better online.

The reason why I stay subbed to this channel is for the only reason that you're honest. You don't just praise a game just because it's praised by other or because it's made by some specific company. I hope you keep being this honest and making sure I don't waste my money on games like these.

Josh would you say that super mario party is at least a step in the right direction?

I kinda like the allies, but there should be on option to turn them off or at least set a limit.

BeatEmUps was also disappointed in the game. Me as well. It's like Nintendo were only making another mini-game fest and just tacked on some half baked modes around promising ideas to try and convince fans there's value for $60. This game needed more time in the oven.

seriously, let's all be honest here, these party games now days are made just to showcase the new gimmicks these new hardware is having, switch HD Rumble, multi screen, motion controls, just like Start The Party on ps3 that is showcasing the Move capabilities.

I agree with you. It's better than MP9 and 10 in many ways, but not all. I mean, it's pretty dreadful to try to unlock all the minigames and modes (like Champion's Road), and some of the modes aren't fun at all. The board games also have slow pacing and the boards themselves aren't that well designed.

Interesting note about the WiiMote vs the JoyCons when it comes to how the motion controls work: The WiiMote, when aimed at a sensor bar, doesn't drift. This allows the WiiMote to be ideal for shooting gallery style minigames and any minigame that requires precise pointing. The JoyCons have no way of counteracting the drift, other than having much more precise internal sensors. So despite the JoyCons having much better motion control sensors, the JoyCons inevitably drift. That might be what you're noticing in some minigames that don't feel right.

Great video as always. People who think this game and Mario Tennis Aces have had a decent amount of content at launch are only contributing to the problem. Don't let the dislike bar discourage you from speaking up!

19:25 I just have to say, Toadette looks cute normally (like Toad) but those balloons really make her cuter. I like that Nintendo randomly made a render of her holding on to the balloons, which I would think would be too random to deserve a 3D render.

I agree with just about every point you bring up. Two things that, combined together, really frustrated me were the coins for 3rd place and 10 coins for a star now. 10 coins is practically nothing, and when you're getting rewarded for LOSING MINIGAMES, it becomes incredibly difficult to NOT have 10 coins. You could mess up constantly, trip over toadette as she flies right in front of you, and get a star. With random star blocks and bonus stars I guess it doesn't really matter as it's never been a super competitive game anyway, but that just bothered me so much. Why even charge coins if you'll always have tons and it barely costs anything?

I honestly don't really mind that the game only has 4 game boards since there are quite a few other modes that make up for it (at least in my opinion).

Say what you want but I’ve been binging most of Josh’s rants on here now that The Bit Block is coming back and this dude was PROPHETIC in a lot of these about how lame the game was haha.

The game is still new and fresh so I'm still having some fun with it, but who knows how long that will last... my siblings and I are already talking about playing the N64 titles again.

Mario Party 8 was the last good Mario Party

The NSMB theme is a mandated branding issue by the "Mario team" at EPD. They control the brand, and they make sure every developer (that isn't Tokyo EPD, I suppose) sticks to the branding. Every single piece of Mario merchandise sticks to it as well. It's soul suckingly depressing, but that's the way things have been for like, a decade now. I don't think ND Cube has a choice in the matter, or Camelot, or anyone working on a Mario game that isn't Koizumi's 3D team.

small boards isn't as big of a problem though because how the decreased the dice blocks from 10 to 6. Plus, I always felt that it was super easy to give up on a star on previous mario parties because you were so afraid. Super Mario Party makes it more competive by having a smaller board. Would I want a bigger board? Yes, I would want the option to also choose a bigger board. Do I ONLY want bigger boards? No. Do I think small boards are bad? Absolutely not.

I felt that exact same way but was basically trying to convince myself that maybe I was just making it up, but after this review, I know I wasn't. Everything you said in this review is EXACTLY WORD FOR WORD what I thought of the game when I first played it a few days ago. Thankfully I still have Mario party 6 and 7 so I at least have a good mario party I can play with friends.

Haha I like how your outro is slowed down. I couldn't agree more about the New Super Mario Bros. thing. These locales could be worse (they're mostly at least less-overused NSMB environments than stuff like Green Grassland With Striped Hills and Blue Buzzy Beetle Underground With Another 1-2 Remix, though the obligatory lava stage is still there). That said I definitely miss when Mario spinoffs tried their own thing. I also miss the unique host characters, why is it just Toad/Toadette? I like how they establish Kamek as being all like "be careful what you wish for" to explain how he can troll Bowser, but I think a non-Koopa Troop villain would fit the resident-troll role better with Bowser + minions playable. I'd hate to pull the Fawful but I'm a fanboy what do you expect, he's both a villain and a rival to Bowser it's perfect. Also Bowser and his minions are playable. And Koopa Kid is still off in the corner waiting to be used again :/

That snowball throwing snowman idea was also in chilly waters and is originally from mario party 3. That was a great board and the BEST mario party btw. I say mario party 2 and mario party 6 were about tied for second.

I love the character roster and unique dice blocks, but the fact that there is so little content in the main Mario party is saddening. And we can't even play boards against each other online! And tbh I really liked the 2v2 mode but all the other modes are a waste of development time.

I like how you could just press A instead of doing that stupid motion to high 5 on certain events.
