On July 9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed uncertainty about the actions of Donald Trump if he were to be elected to a second term as US president in November. Speaking at an event at the Ronald Reagan Institute in Washington, DC, Zelensky stated he did not know Trump well but hoped that US support for Kyiv would remain steadfast.
"I don't know who will be the president of the United States. I hope that the United States will never leave NATO; otherwise, the world will lose many countries, as leaders like Putin will target small countries that rely on America's presence in NATO," Zelensky said.
Reflecting on his interactions with Trump, Zelensky remarked, "I don't know him very well. I had meetings with him, and we had good meetings when he was president, but we didn't go through the war with him. I can't tell you what he will do if he becomes president of the United States. I don't know."
Zelensky urged US political leaders not to delay support for Ukraine in light of the impending presidential election. He emphasized the importance of immediate action, stating, "Everyone is waiting for November. Americans are waiting for November, in Europe, Middle East, in the Pacific, the whole world is looking towards November, and, truly speaking, Putin awaits November too. It is time to step out of the shadows, to make strong decisions ... to act and not to wait for November or any other month."
