I Didn't Need This Tent! But...

Ойын-сауық

The Gossamer Gear The One is a tent that I definitely didn't need to add to my collection of tents, but alas a Labor Day sale got the best of me. I've been interested in this tent for some time, but haven't ever jumped on it cause it wasn't a necessary purchase. Needless to say, I am happy with the tent, the design, and look forward to the Dyneema version coming soon.

Perfect timing, I just got off the trail. I used a Tarptent Protrail. Love how light it is and easy to setup, but getting in and out of it was a real pain. Along with sitting up in it of course. Definitely gonna give this one some serious thought. Thanks!

Hey Devin! I have a 2018 model of The Two and a 2019 model of The One. They are fantastic! To solve the need for extra stakes for the bathtub floor, I came up with a hack that I think you will love!! I used tiny lightweight 1.5mm cord (Ripstop By The Roll) tied one end to the bathtub loop, then put the other end through the inside loop of the main stake out point, then tied a slipknot to about the middle point of the cording so it can be adjusted. I left about a 2 inch tail with a knot so its easy to find and adjust. Works like a charm!!! Bathtub floor has a little bit of adjustable tension and no need for more than 8 stakes. :)

Great tent! Lasted the entirety of the pacific crest trail for me in 2019. Being silnylon, it sags after initial set up, the especially in the rain. I’m probably going to end up with the DCF version for the CDT in April.

I’ve been using my The One for over a year now. Dozens of nights in it and I love it. I added lines to the bathtub floor loops so I can use one stake at each corner. Works great and lets you use the 6 stakes or 8 with the side pullouts. I replaced the stuff sack with a zpacks medium dyneema stuff sack. It’s a little narrower and longer so it fits better in my packs side pocket.

Thanks for the nice walkthrough of The One. When I see reviews like this, I think I should throw in the towel on the tarp/bivy game and just go back to a simple, reliable integrated shelter like this. Interesting approach to include the weight and behavior of Easton carbon poles. I wonder how the GG aluminum poles perform in comparison. They’re 2oz heavier, but may be more rigid. At that point, you can get into a Nemo or Big Agnes 1p double wall at the same weight. Hmmm.

You aren't the only one. I like to camp in a hammock but at times do need a tent so I got one of the dan durston x-mid 1p tent's , 2 good of a deal to pass up. That tent is packed with four others ( 2 from Six Moon's Designs ) , all solo tents. Nice thing about the x-mid , 4 or 6 stakes and two treaking poles to set it up , which I replaced with the carbon fiber poles from Z-Packs.

I have The TWO. I prefer more space to store my gear with me inside the tent. It is really easy to setup and works pretty good in the rain. Condensation is a possibility if you have close up the tent, but having 2 openings can usually allow you to leave one side open for air flow. The stake issue bugged me at first, but I got some lightweight titanium ones for the inside floor. Thanks for the great video.

Good review, neat tent. I have been considering the Durston X-mid or Lanshan 1 Pro, but this adds another option. The x-mid seems to be a very easy pitch too with only 4 pegs required but it is less roomy and the little chance it will be made with dynema. Too many choices, I suppose that is a good thing. The packed size looks nice but I'm not a fan of anything that requires two poles to setup. I generally prefer a single trekking pole. Thanks for showing how flimsy the carbon poles from SMD are. I'd thought about picking up one but it seems like the aluminum version would be worth the weight penalty as I'm assuming it's 7 series and stiffer. The rear panel would concern me since I side sleep and toss and turn at night. Any condensation on that part of the tent would drip down into the bathtub floor as best as I can tell. It looks like you could ad some shock cord to the floor timeouts and just guy them out to the same stakes as the fly. Personally I've been using a tarp bivy combo lately. I have a new flat tarp coming in today to try out as well. But for the time being a cheap shaped tarp and borah bivy has been a great shelter for just under a pound with no Dyneema required. Definitely not for everyone but you still get lots of room so long as you don't mind being exposed to the outdoors during the waking hours. I'm not sure you would like the idea of just tossing a sack on the ground and crawling in though but it definitely is more fun than it sounds.

I have The One as well. Easy to get a quick setup. At 5.7" and getting slimmer I love the room. I normally use 6 MSR mini groundhogs but add up to 6 titanium shepherd hooks if I stake out the floor and the extra wall tie outs - alot but manageable. About 22.5 to 24 oz total. They have a newer version of the nylon The One that is a bit lighter. The DCF version is not 100% DCF - only "rain fly" is. DCF. Bathtub is still Sil-nylon and is only about 2.6 or so oz less the the new Sil-nylon version which given the price of $539 is a turn off for me. I'd like a bit lighter setup but their DCF price or the ZPACKs Plexamid at $549 or Duplex at $599 is out of my league for now.

When sitting Up on my x-lite pad, my head touches the roof in the x-mid and I have to bend down or move back in the tent. Reading the stats the one only provides 2 inches more of headroom compared to the x-mid, so think thw problem would be the same with the interior hight.

The other issue is the fragile bathtub floor. I did my best to baby it and ALWAYS used a ground sheet and still got a tear in the floor. Like I said... Hmmm - except for weight, I can’t see any advantages of The One over the Lanshan 2 Pro. The Lanshan costs about half the price, is more solid (20 D), is 7 cm longer and has a HH of 2.000 mm (compaired to The One’s 1.200 mm) . Or am I missing something? 🤔

I don’t have experience with the One, but after owning GG’s previous Twinn Tarp (which was a custom 7D material) I would have no problem recommending their ripstop requirements. The denier isn’t the whole story of fabric durability. HH also depends on real world degradation based on UV breakdown, abrasion, waterproof coating, etc.

Andrew C . I agree with you on weight and customer service, but disagree about build quality. Have you ever owned a 3F tent? I now have 3 of them and previously owned 2 others, and the quality is really top notch (- which you also can see from the many reviews on UT). And still half the price..😜

Not to mention you need 2 trekking poles, I only hike with one, so I will need to bring in another one or the dedicated pole but thats adding ~3 oz more, which brings the weight gap even closer between lanshan and the GG tent., I believe a couple of oz of difference between the 1 person model. But not sure if you have more head room with the one vs lanshan 1 pro, any ideas?

Specs are cool yet...I hate waking up with a wet footbox in the the morning. Is this tent long enough for a six footer on a 3" thick pad? My lightheart gear tent is a palces of roominess yet is a bit heavier (2.5 pounds) than I would like.

You purchased it LITERALLY over Labor Day weekend? Are you sure you didn't purchase it a day before or after? Or was it LITERALLY over that weekend? Nah, just breaking your balls. If I were in the market for this type of tent at that weight and price I'd go for the Durston X-Mid 1 person. Only needs 4 stakes and comes in Silpoly, and is double walled.

@@BackcountryExposure I didn't quite remember it right. I also mentioned to them that I had size 14 feet and that the pad is 25x78. I also expressed my concerns about the 24" footbox Here's what they wrote "If you utilize our side wall tie outs every night, you would fit perfectly. Without utilizing our side wall tie outs, it would be a tight fit (especially with that tall of a pad). The Two would certainly be more consistently spacious." You also mentioned 28" at the floor... is that including the bathtub? The current site doesn't have dimensions, so i had to come up w/ the 24" somewhere. Do you have the 2021 version?
