    There are 2 types of laksa, Singaporeans eat anything so we don't mind what the ingredients are as long as the stomach is happy!!!! Yeah, westerners are much more picky and fussy about the food they eat especially seafood, we don't care just eat, we were brought up not to be judgemental about the food our parents buy and cook

    For laksa, you were standing too close as there is an open fire stove below. She was asking you to stand back for your safety in case you get burned, not that you can’t video. The secret is already cooked inside the soup like the curry noodles, there was nothing to hide ;)

    Can I just say I love the fact that you have ambient noise in your videos. It adds to the authenticity (which your videos are really good for) and really helps remind me of home as a Singaporean based abroad, kinda like when Charlie Puth worked with our tourism board to feature the sounds of Singapore haha.     Ice Kachang usually has 3 colours of syrup used in the dessert. They are pink rose syrup, green pandan syrup and brownish-black gula melaka syrup. Default toppings for normal Ice Kachang include Red Beans, Grass Jelly (brownish-black jelly), pinkish-red Agar-agar Jelly, Cream Style Corn, Attap Seeds (Nipah Palm Fruit) and evaporated milk.

    @@JayandKarolina well it did take me some time to recall the toppings, but as a local Singaporean who has eaten Ice Kachang many times, it is not an impossible task hehe. Currently, Ice Kachang is served in a bowl and eaten with a spoon but way back in the olden days, the Ice Kachang was actually known as 'Ice Ball' by the older generation. Try Googling 'Ice Ball' Singapore' to find out more about the history of Ice Ball and its evolution into the current Ice Kachang

    @@JayandKarolina It has been a while since I last had Ice Kachang so I had to think hard to recall the toppings because Ice Kachang was like a real treat, given that it is more expensive than other hot desserts. Ice Kachang actually started off many years ago in Singapore as the 'Ice Ball'. The Ice Ball was literally made with bare hands and eaten with bare hands.

    You both are adorable and lovely to see you going all out to try the local food! And to answer the question of whether to mix or not mix - The general rule of the thumb is that if the condiment or sauce is already IN the dish/bowl/soup , then yes , do mix. But if the sauce/condiments are served separately like for chicken rice - then generally it’s for dipping. But then again , no rules here. Nothing is against etiquette as far as hawker food is concerned.

    oh man.. I was waiting to see you eat the cockles and you did! Not just that, you ate only the cockle So hats off to you that you didn't have a violent reaction immediately. Even amongst Singaporeans, it's definitely a love hate relationship with cockles. I could never bring myself to eat that stuff. So well done!

    For the curry chicken noodles, the first item is correct a kind of toufu. We called it tou pok or toufu puff/spongy toufu. The second white piece is fish cake not rice. Some people likes to dip their food into the sambal, others like to add it into the curry directly as it is not spicy enough. There is no peanuts in the laksa. Those are just coconut cream/oil split from the cooking :D Yes main ingredient for laksa is dried shrimp. Cockles are added in raw. The noodles are thick rice noodles. For soup base there is not much to mix about hehehe. Not everyone fancies the blood cockles. Me too, mussels, cockles. Actually a lot of hawker centres have those dessert stalls selling various shaved ice desserts and hot chinese desserts😄My favourite chendol is at Chinatown Complex - Amoy Chendol, which you guys had visited earlier. (they use fresh cold pressed coconut milk and hand made chendol jellies.) Bobo cha cha has hot or cold versions. It's basically coconut milk with added steamed cubes of yam, sweet potatoes, sago, tapioca jelly. Please don't put the utensils on the table or tray.

    We like the taste of the Curry Noodles more just because there were so many ingredients - even potatoes 😳 However, we were happy to try Laksa since it is a beloved locals' dish (and at that point we had no idea some people do not like the blood cockles so we gave it a go too haha). We actually really like the jellies used in all the desserts, so I'm glad you're sharing another location for Chendol because we will of course add it to our list!!! Bubur Cha Cha was my favourite so need to make sure to go for a hot version next time ❤️

    When having Laksa, cannot do without the Laska leaf(Vietnamese coriander) usually local will chopped it up and add it for Laksa. In Singapore supermarket could get the ready made Laksa paste, and make Laksa at home. That's what I did once in awhile for my family.

    We do have dried shrimps in the laksa paste to bring out the flavours. You can choose different type of noodles to go with. If you like to make your own, get a few packs of Prima laksa premix from any supermarket and just follow the steps. 😊

    What we locals in Singapore like to do prior to getting our food in the hawker; we'd like to find a table first, and use whatever we have to "chope" or reserve a seat/table. usually its tissue paper, umbrellas, cig boxes, etc. I've even sometimes seen powerbanks, bags and laptops.

    Yeah for the laksa, u gotta mix everything together. Even the cockles, u eat it with the gravy, so that the briney taste and the coconut laksa gravy compliments each other.

    This laksa is my fav, and the only store you eat with only the spoon w/o chopsticks. The main ingredients is coconut, chili and this store plentiful of dried shrimp. We always start with two bowls at one go

    I usually come across Bubur Cha Cha as a hot dessert. The jellies in Bubur Cha Cha are made from Sago. Ingredients include sweet potatoes and yam (seen at 12:37 to 12:41), cooked in a coconut cream soup infused with Pandan leaves. For some desserts, it is good to try them when they are hot, because even though Singapore is a hot country, eating something that is closer to your body temperature is actually better for digestion, since the body has to work harder to digest food that is cold, possibly causing indigestion.

    Yes, Tian Tian did not give the full course of Chicken rice. Rice + Chicken + cucumber Chilli, dark n ginger sauce A bowl of chicken rice soup. Satay 6 has the best peanut sauce 😊

    Examples of typical hot desserts include Bubur Cha Cha, Bubur Terigu (pronounced as 'Boo Bor Ter Ree Goo') (White Wheat Porridge with Coconut Cream), Pulut Hitam (pronounced as 'Poo Loot Hee Tah Um') (Black Glutinous Rice Porridge with Coconut Cream), Green Bean Soup (made from mung beans) (mung beans are known as green beans in Singapore), Red Bean Soup, and Cheng Tng (A sweet dessert soup typically containing white fungus, dried persimmon, large pearl sago, malva nut jelly, pearl barley and rehydrated dried longans served in a soup made from dried longans).

    Another great video featuring local food, bud! That tofu piece that soaks up the sauce? Locally, we call it taupok (dial-pok). Sungei Road is pronounced "Soon-gai (like in kai)" Road. Glad you tried laksa, a perennial local favorite! If you don't like the cockles you can ask them to leave them out the next time you order laksa. :-)

    So glad you enjoyed it 😍 We really wanted to showcase the mot traditional foods since it such big part of the Singaporean culture. We tried hard with the pronunciation but sometimes we're just clueless 😅 Regarding Laksa, we were really into 2 minds if we want to future it (only because we are not the biggest fans of seafood) but we're happy we gave it a go because it's quintessential for the locals! A classic dish! Although, I think we would definitely ask for no cockles next time haha

    If you still in singapore you can go to batam (indonesian country) only 45min with ferry ship, the food there cheap and delicous aswell like the jakarta food. But much better. Back then before covid i work in singapore and every weekend i go back to indonesia(batam) Fyi batam is the closest island in indonesian to singapore

    go to geylang serai food market. there is cheaper food and more malay dishes there with local prices. try 1) nasi jenganan (mix all the ingredients in well into the rice before you eat don't taste individually) 2) nasi sambal goreng. (mix all the ingredients in well into the rice before you eat don't taste individually) 3) malay laksa (mix all the ingredients and some chilli in well into the noodles before you eat don't taste individually) 4) Lontong (mix all the ingredients in well into the rice before you eat don't taste individually) malay laksa isn't so sweet. and there's a specialty Chendol drink store there. it is easily the best in the whole of Singapore for me. mix everything in the chendol before u have it. that's how u have chendol.

    @@JayandKarolinafrom geylang serai market, u can easily walk to katong area for pubs and more cultural places to see and visit, along the way as u walk u will be walking thru joo chiat area ,this place is a whole different experience as well with many small businesses ,cafes, and such and infact a lot of other businesses unrelated. its a must visit. lontong doesn't just refer to the rice alone, its also a dish on its own with its own sauces and soup and sambal (malay chilli paste) and other stuff into the dish. it s not to be missed!! u can also find it in Minang in the restaurant beside the sultan mosque, the restaurants name is minang, best time to find it is before lunch hour crowd.

    For curry noodles and laksa, if you like the soup to be more spicy, then you dissolve the extra chilli paste into the soup. If not, you can scoop it out.

    Yupp... the brown sugary stuff in the dessert is Gula Melaka which is brown cane sugar. And for the chicken rice, mixing all the sauces into the rice is not necessary, just dip the chicken into the sauces would be enough. Otherwise the taste might be too strong for foreigners.

    The desserts were quite sweet but also very refreshing so we didn't mind it on a hot day like that 🤗🔥 Karolina is a dipper, I like to mix everything together but it seems like not so many people actually does it that way!

    Next time if you are sharing a big bowl of noodles, you can always ask for extra bowl/or smaller bowl so you don't have to take turns. The food sellers understand that tourists do this often. Also the laksa might look similar but have a different taste due to dried baby scrimps being added to the soup base and the addition of dried "laksa leaves" as a topping. Bubo cha cha has coconut milk soup with chunks of sweet potato, yam and sago cubes..

    @@JayandKarolina I remembered the Lavender hawker centre used to have a stall selling that but they probably had moved after the place was demolished. I think the Lorong 9 Frog Legs porridge would cost around $8-10 for one frog with porridge. Definitely one of a kind… can’t find it elsewhere in the world 😜 haha

    @@JayandKarolinaTian Tian Chicken Rice only supply chilli sauce but no more supplying ginger garlic , dark soy sauce and chicken soup. It is due to their business is too good and too busy , no time to prepare. I prefer their ex-chef Ah Cai Chicken rice.

    It's not Lontong, it is called ketupak. It is actually a Malay name and it is made from rice, Lontong is another Malay dish with vegetables coconut curry soup with the Ketupat eaten with it

    A good rule of thumb when eating at hawker centres is never to put the cutlery (fork, spoon, chopsticks) on the tray. The trays are not that clean to begin with. You must get a person to help take the utensils for you or try carrying the tray while holding the utensils at the same time.

We actually liked it slightly better over Laksa just because we didn't like the main ingredient: cockles 🤪 But will give Laksa another go next time since we've heard that some people do not like them either!     errr. you dont eat cockles from it just like that. usually locals mix it all together, especially the cockles so that the hot broth kinda cook it more. then the noodles, with fishcake or cockles, and the broth in a spoon, then eat it. taste is totally different!

    I noticed a lot of these KZread explorers only travel to Chinatown and Little India trying food there but not travelling to the Geylang/Eunos/Aljunied area to try our local Malay food which has different varieties as well as food from our Peranakan and Eurasian communities!!!! Seems nobody likes to visit more mosques and churches, they all have their own histories and stories!!!! Like the catholic churches here, only one was built by the Portuguese and still under their Catholic mission with different Portuguese priests running the church till the 1990's

    Its scary, seeing both of you inserted the sharp end of the satay sticks of meat into your mouth. The proper way of eating satay or kebabs, is to slide the meat sideways as you pull the sticks sideways too. Just thought that might help.
