The more tent camping I see the more I'll stick with hammock camping. I got the larger rainfly for mine and have cooked under that sheltered area in a heavy rain. I've also hosted tent campers who had cabin fever. Easy access to enter & exit the hammock under shelter of the rainfly without getting wet is another advantage. The only disadvantage is the potential of being seen as a bear taco.

Not everybody is comfortable sleeping in a hammock, other than that I agree. I have a 10'6" one wind hammock with bug netting. I also have a windsock for it and a 3.5x3.5 meter DD tarp as a fly that is big enough to pitch it with doors. It's all very compact, except the tarp is a bit bulky, but I would use that sam tarp as a ground shelter so it's not like that would change

They used to call these "Lung failure bags" because these types of tents, even after washing, due to all the moisture build up due to condensation, would grow mold and fungus and soldiers would often get pneumonia or other lung related diaeases - AND if enough black mold builds up in the tent and someone inhales it, it's either bye bye world or hello lung transplant.

Sorry but you’re wrong about black mold, no species of black mold kills or causes serious harm to any average healthy person, and even then it’s highly unlikely to be bye bye world or hello new lung lol, also it’s still unlikely on these modern tent surfaces to be highly susceptible to Molds, most common would be general powdery mildew and it’s quite easily washed off, I’m not sure about much much older tents, but if any soldiers died it wasn’t down to inhaling the mysterious horror that is “black mold”

Design note on most military gear: Designed functional and rugged (usually) at the cheapest cost to the taxpayers (usually), not for comfort ever (for proof I submit to you the design of the version 1 HUMVEE seat - a crushable pad with a bolted down seat back somewhere in the vicinity). All gear comes in two sizes, too large and too small. Also for proof, ask anyone who has ever slept in any GP (General Purpose) Medium Tent which is a tent that's been around since the 50's I believe but is still commonly found in most military units for use in the field. Comes in two sizes, sweltering in the heat and freezing in the cold. Suggestion for a Steath1 possible solution we found since I've used many low profile tents like that: Use a poncho drape over the doorway since most doors like that are designed to take your boots off and hide / keep your gear close but not inside the tent while keeping a low profile. The drape ( usually rigged at about a 30 deg angle which spools water off to each side, not in front of the door, plus try to keep a "peak" in it which is superb for a 4 point tie down ) has to be rigged over the door but not contact the tent, therefore defeating the waterproofing of the tent, but what it does do is keep the rain out when the door flap is open which definitely helps with the condensation problem. Also allows you to swing your legs out over the "bath tub" and plop your feet in your boots without taking a shower if you get my meaning.

Great video I love the effort you put into this so people do not waste their money on a product that doesn’t preform. I had a dome tent once and only used it a few times because of the lack of ventilation. Back in the 80s eureka made a tent called the Alpine Meadows. They made a 2,4 and 6 person. My son and I started back country canoeing every summer from when he was 5 till 18 . We had the 2;person and we never got wet in the the harshest conditions of wind and rain. The beauty of the tent it that the rain fly extended over the front and rear doors some and you could open the top foot on either end. We could dry clothes in there even with it raining. This was in the Kenai Moose Refuge on the Swan Lake canoe trail system.

But it’s light weight and compact. Perfect for what I needed. Thanks for the video. I’m planning camping trips for this spring in Montana and thinking I check out hammock tents. I chose the 23zero due to the window design that you can have really good ventilation on a hot humid night in the rain, while the Nebula has to be ALL closed up. Did I mention I live in Queensland Australia? It can get fricken hot & humid and I’d hate to endure a rainy night without an open vent. So this video really instilled how important ventilation is & now even happier I chose the swag I did due to its ventilation.

The setup that I spent a whole Summer and Fall in (9 Months) was a two tarp and cheap tent set-up. The tarps were long enough to seal-up the back and have a substantial vestibule in front. The sides of the bottom tarp came up on the sides to prevent water from splashing up from the ground and the top tarp did not reach the ground to allow for ventilation. I just used a cheapo dome tent with plenty of screen on top for ventilation and to keep the bugs out. Never had a problem with water infiltration or condensation. I took off my boots and left them in the vestibule and did all of my cooking there during rainy weather. I always stayed clean and dry.

Luke, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the ultimate, lightweight bug-proof mesh tent to pitch under a tarp. Considering the fact that we will all be using it with a tarp, the areas of concern are, is it lightweight? Is it totally bug/spider proof? Is it AFFORDABLE? Is it durable? Color would be a factor as well. I don't care how awesome it is, I just can't get excited about it if it's hot pink/neon green, etc. Barring a massive design flaw, it SHOULD be breathable. I think myself not alone in saying that YOU are the man for the job! (Don't know who else I would trust here on "the tube"!) Luke, thanks so much for all you do/ have done. Much appreciated!

If you know the ancient trackway and like to wild camp, unless they spot you with a helicopter, your chances of being stopped are very slim. Mind you wild camping isn't for everyone. I get really peed off when I come across a site where someone has camped and literally turned the site into a shite heap. A true wild camper leaves no sign that anyone was ever there. Also helps if you know how to live off the land, snare a rabbit or two and tickle a couple of brown trout.

I got something like this from Go Outdoors in the UK a few years ago. The upper parts of the inner were a mesh so it wasn't humid, but small... the tent was 6' long. I am 5'11. It paid for itself, offsetting the hotel bills I avoided paying but like the first one you tested, better suited to those outdoor types who don't mind the discomfort and damp, and who have no need of sitting up.

I have a good 2-man tent by Moss tents (purchased in 1999) that stays very dry during several days of rain with decent ventilation, but condensation is a problem as well.

I spent 6 weeks in a 1964 springbar tent in Ketchikan Alaska. While everyone with a plastic tent had to hang tarps over theirs, I sat back and relaxed. In fact my tent came to be the hangout place for everyone else. Zed water came through the walls even with stuff touching them. In canvas you never ever have ventilation problems. While my puptent isn't for backpacking, it weighs 21 lbs, if I'm going to be at a site and do my hiking in a hub fashion, then I will make 2 trips to bring it. Although I don't like carrying it more than 14km. Unfortunately today's springbar tents are seriously lacking in quality 😢

You should hang an altimeter in there when you let it stand like that. Most have readings for temp and humidity and my garmin would chart it over time. Give you a good idea for when you need to take some seasoning to baste with

Been years since I’ve had even a 2 person tent but I’ve always had a Coleman. My 6 person weathermaster is my favorite. It’s dry, breaths and I’ve used it in really high winds. I’ll probably buy another down the road.

I’ve had some Coleman’s and they did great. I do seal the seams, and I’m typically car camping but I’ve never had a problem. I have bad knees so there’s a zero percent chance of me hiking overnight.

My first new car was a 1977 GMC Sprint (GMC's version of the El Camino) that had the same design flaw... and it didn't come with rain gutters. EVERY TIME you opened the driver's door, ANY rain/condensation on the roof (and I lived in South Florida at the time) would fall right onto the driver's shoulder and left leg.

Hey Luke! Yeah that tent would not work very well here where I live. I would have to leave the sleeve off and just use a tarp over it maybe. Here in Texas you would really cook inside that thing all sealed up like that.

I use an old 'Pocket Hotel' made by Early Winters. It's Gore Tex and it's one layer only. No rain fly is needed. The Gore tex keeps water out but let's condensation out through its pores. Just be sure to seal the seams. Early Winters is no longer in business but you may find some of their stuff on the internet. It's kept me dry in torrential downpours. Small but I love it. It's only 2 lbs

The structure and design looks great. But I feel like they gave up functionality for overall design. Just one second of opening that door and the inside of your tent becomes an aquarium.

I don't know why he said that. I mean that's why there is a door in the rain fly AND the tent: you open up the fly in the rain, oh no, your tent gets rained on, then you close the rain fly, before you open the tent. I don't think airlocks are a foreign concept to him.

Back in the late 80’s I was attached to the 38th MDS in West Germany. Every month we were in the field. I loved it. As an Air Force guy, I spent a lot of time in the woods. I still have my issued cold weather sleeping bag. I have found no better sleeping bag than this one. We had fun. MRE’s, cold, wet tents and sleep deprivation. I didn’t mind it being in my early 20’s. I was a true GLCM warrior. Not a “GAMMA GUY”. Take care all. 🇺🇸😎👍

I bought the original issue stealth because it has a 3” “skirt” on the fly that can be staked out to provide better protection from rain. I’ve had too many windy rain storms where rain spray right into my tent. It has two massive half circle doors that go the length of the tent along both sides. They make for easy entry and exit. They also have mesh so when opened up. It essentially makes a mosquito net. The door on one side the fly is a straight down zipper from the middle of the tent. The other side has another door with two zippers. Never had trouble with leaks or getting hot.
