you got lucky to not get a lightning storm (that's what the rods are for). lightning can destroy you and is attracted to you, since you are metal.

Blitz needs to hire a new navigator. He's constantly crash landing on alian planets.

Need to build a cargo container for the vehicle. The lightning rod gives you the ability to approach the blue lightning trees which you can eventually do enough damage to it to harvest it.. don't remember what rare resource it drops. If you target and destroy the cab or the frame the wheels and weapons will drop
