I Destroyed My RS7.. My Biggest F*** Up Yet

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is probably the worst thing I've in regards to "working" on my own car.. My Audi RS7 has serious damage from me simply trying to take a wheel off..

In the over glorified world of KZread these days, it’s refreshing to see an honest raw video on an error like this. Mess ups like these are also something we could all learn from too. I know I once had a car lose balance while the wheel was off before and I just wish I recorded it. Hopefully this video performs well to help pay the damages off!

Great video as always! You may want to check into replacing your other tires. I recall from somewhere that Audi’s Quattro system is “sensitive” to having differences in tire circumferences. In other words, your drivetrain could be affected by having a single tire that is slightly wider than the other tires because of the tread depth.

Place a jack stand, then you would have height to put the jack under the rear of the car to put your other jack stand. For sure you need some basic training for how to work on cars on your driveway: 1. Put the car on the flat surface. 2. Apply the emergency brake, put the car into gear, and block the wheels with anything suitable (choose what is convenient). 3. Lift the car on lifting points. 4. Secure the car with jacks/ blocks/ wood/ spare wheels - more is better. 5. Inform someone nearby, that you are starting to work on the car that is lifted in case of emergency. 6. Start working safely.

Harbor Freight Jacks aren't the greatest. The rotor is most likely fine since they're manufactured like tanks. The dust shield behind the rotor needs replacing. Easy fix. The entire door doesn't need repainting. It can be blended / feathered / faded in from the bottom half up slightly to the middle of the door. Shouldn't be noticeable if the painter knows what he's doing.

17:02. The body shop should be able to match the paint up perfectly. They will only blend/spray grey paint at the bottom of the door and clear coat the whole door, they don’t actually spray the grey on the whole entire door, that would cause it to look different. Since it’s at the bottom, you would never be able to tell, and it’s also a dark grey which is typically easy to match unlike the silver on youre S Class. Silver can sometimes be a pain to match.

You can put some car wax over that spot that is scratched. That will keep it from rusting until you can get it fixed. A good body shop will not respray the entire door - just an area around the damage and blend it into the rest of the door above. You won't notice it. Are you using the designated lifting point on the chassis for your jack? That is in your owners manual.

    1. Parking Brake Engaged; 2. Put the Gear Selector in Park; 3. Find the CORRECT place to put the jack. Not anywhere under the side of the car, man, there are specific points where you are supposed to put the jack. And only then you bring her up. And next time, try doing that on a flat surface like your garage, it’s better for the jack.

There are 2 jacking points on each side. one behind front tire and one in front of rear tire ... rubber pads you put the jack on ...

Mike, even though your Audi has AWD, the tires are ultra high performance summer tires. They’re not designed to drive in snow or icy/freezing/wintry conditions. The rubber compound hardens up under those extremes, and you will have shitty traction and grip. Drive careful man.

I know you don’t wanna hear this, but here’s the trick that I use. If you can’t properly wheel chock the tires, just throw a couple boulders in front of and behind a couple tires. Also when you’re jacking up the car and you get that tire off, immediately put the tire on its side underneath the suspension. And then as a last ditch effort, if you couldn’t get that jackstand in, you could’ve always thrown the jackstand sideways underneath there as a temporary measure to kind of hold it up a little bit. Next time. 👍 Great video btw.

A new rotor shouldn’t be required. Check those jack points on future maintenance actions. Looks like you were jacking it up on the skirt/body and not the pinch weld. Glad you’re ok. You could have swept that one under the rug so kudos on posting it.

You should’ve never lifted it from the rocker panel or put a jack stand under there. Any structural components are further inboard. Always set your parking brake, chock the wheels and use a jack on a flat surface. An incline or decline is dangerous as hell. You did a few thousand in damage, minimum, for sure. The rocker panels are hollow. Some vehicles have reinforced jack points on the rockers but they’re identifiable in the manual and some are marked on the rocker itself. Put the tire on, call the tow truck and take it to the body shop.

You were 100% jacking on the side skirt itself, not the cutout on the frame. Regardless of if the car rolled, a good jack, with the handle tightened, should have just rolled with the car. I have had this happen to me many times. What happened is that the side skirt gave out and the jack went through the side skirt and hit the side of the door. Lesson learned, read the owners manual to see the actual jacking points. Fiberglass cant support a car.

I think the issue was that the wheels were not chalked off since he was in a driveway. Even if he had it in the wrong spot then it would probably have been fine. It’s because the car started rolling. If the wheels were chalked off then this would not happen.

My neighbor was changung his tire and he had one of those bottle jacks that he was using and his car slipped off the jack and the jack went right through his floor pan. Then he freaked out and tried driving the car...with no tire...to get the car off the jack. He was from Vietnam and his knowledge of driving, plus his knowledge of cars in general added up to be about a 3, but he was always doing dumb stuff to his car. His brakes were squeeking so he put WD-40 on the rotors. He shoved wads of foam from an air conditioning filter into his air intake filter. He put soap mixed with rubbing alcohol in his windshield wiper fluid. Another time he didn't like Bush for President flag on my car, so he got the 'Quayle' flag and stuck it in his antenna. But the flag was too big and tore his antenna off. He tried tinting his own windows and messed that up. The guy was just an idiot and his poor Subaru. I hate Subarus, but I felt bad for that car

I am sorry to say but I am not sure he comprehend the full lesson of this. No infomration in the video about drawing the consequences and WHAT TO DO DIFFERENTLY next time. What I would add to the end: A) Always prepare yourself for a job even if it is a tire change. (Especially on a 100k car). Check youtube. You will learn what tools do you need and what is the process. Watch at least three videos and you will be surprised how many angles a job have presented by different youtubers. A) parking brake engaged. Bricks applied on back wheels on BOTH direction. Put the air suspension in maintnance - tyre change mode. Loose the wheel nuts. B) Every german car has a lifting points. It is incredible how he was not able to find them. Use these points for jacking or you will damage your car. Period. Use the proper adapter fitted to the jackpoint hole. Again, preparation. After lifting use other tools like wood blocks next to to provide further support. Seems to be overkill until it is not. C) Invest to a torque wrench. Check the manufacturer's data for torque specification for lugnuts. That cross wrench he used was definitely not enough. (140 Nm? No way, even if he stands and jumping on one arm.) It is a sad story in every aspect. My language s..ks.

The reason the jack started moving was because of the incline. You should’ve been on a flat surface doing this or put something behind the wheels and jack to stop it from shifting. I almost was in a similar situation but i used a brick to block the wheel from moving.
