Yeah, it's called risk distribution. 99 people overpay for the 1 that actually needs it. Would you want to be potentially bankrupt for being involved in an accident with a Ferrari or even worse... a serious injury or fatality? If it wasn't for insurance, people would not be driving unless they were all super rich. Sure, paying insurance sucks but it's definitely a necessity.

  • @RadRidesByCru

    @RadRidesByCru

    5 жыл бұрын

Well... don't you know how to take the fun out of funny... Insurance can be a prudent option in some cases, but calling it a necessity is problematic. Sticking with car insurance so the conversation doesn't spiral... States with "mandated" auto insurance have higher premiums than states where insurance is optional. Which invalidates "without insurance only rich people would drive.". And in most every case, the cost of an object is greater when insurance is involved. Thus, without insurance, the cost of an accident would actually be lower. And if people had to pay for accident repairs out of pocket, cars would cost less because people wouldn't purchase expensive to repair vehicles.

  • @anonypersona3189

@@RadRidesByCru Obviously you haven't been hit by an uninsured driver before. I have. Long story short, it sucks. I'm not arguing that insurance is expensive, it is. However it provides complete assurance if an accident happens. I don't care how careful you drive - you can always still get into an accident. People without insurance are the worst. They tend to be the selfish pricks. Trust me, if insurance companies just poofed out of existence tomorrow, the world would be a much worse place. Sure, it has it's flaws but it keeps people in check. Imagine if everyone had to go to court over car damages for EVERY accident - because that what would happen if insurance wasn't around. The court system would be overwhelmed... which costs money... same cycle except now you're dealing with lawyers who get paid $500/hr.

AnonyPersons… Knock on wood, never been hit by an uninsured motorist... but I have been hit by insured motorists and my insurance company paid them even when they shouldn't have, which is the worst example of basically the same thing. If insurance companies vanished police would still be the first line in determining fault, just as they are now, and the courts would likely only see a minimal increase as only those who *could* afford to go to court would... and the judgements would only be worth the paper they're written on. Which is the only real value of car insurance... it's easier to get money from an insurance company than from their customers.

I just rented a car overseas a couple weeks ago, do it several times a year from the same company in that country and this time I ended up making a turn and driving over some mud on the side of the road that ended up being a big drop, the car literally bottomed out and the bottom slammed onto the road on one side and I had to drag it forward to get it out making the most horrible noise, whole side covered in mud and looked terrible, hubcap was kind of fucked up; took it back when I was flying out expecting to be charged for some sort of damage and the girl was like, looks fine, wrote it up and took the keys and that was it. When I rented a car in Dublin, I returned it with scratches all down the passenger side from me scraping against bushes when letting people by on the narrow country roads. Didn't notice until I was filling up prior to returning it. I thought they might say something, but when I returned it, they guy looked it over, rubbed a panel where it was scratched, and said "Looks good to me!" I did opt for full insurance, so would have been covered anyway. I wonder if he took that into account.

Sixt, atleast some airport stations, are freaking bonkers. They tried to pull a fast one on my rental, "finding two new" damages... photographed one damage from wrong side of car(!), the other one was actually in their "evidence photo" but severly overstated, saying >50mm long scratch, actual size about 30mm. However... since I videotaped the car I just sent them a few frames from video where I pointed out the damages pre-existing. The worst part is I actually walked thru the car with the Sixt representative before going and she took notes for the first 3 to 5 (out of 12-15 nicks, scratches, bumps) then she sort of zoned out and just started rolling her eyes. Problem is Europcar is just the same, atleast at Weeze Airport they tried same shit on me.

In a lot of places the insurance the car rental company sells you specifically excludes wheels anyway. Then there's often an excess of a couple of grand regardless.

In Europe there will often be basic insurance included in the hire but with a very large excess, payable if you damage something. To avoid the excess you will be pressure-sold an enhanced hire cover that doubles maybe triples the daily rate....or you buy an annual policy that just covers your excess, costing about $50 p.a. but not from the hire companies. If you damage something the hire company takes the excess from you credit card then you claim back from your annual policy.

I always decline insurance. But once I did get damage to a rental and had to go through the whole process, one thing to remember that your credit card (in my case VISA) only picks up whatever your auto insurance does not cover first, or your credit card will pick up the $500 insurance deductible so you are not out anything out of pocket. Either way you have to make a claim on your auto insurance so your rates could go up.

Lots of credit cards offer insurance on rental cars if you use the card for the rental purchase. I use an app called “Sift” to check what each of my cards cover to know which to use and think it can be handy for stuff like this to save money on insurance. Some credit cards also offer travel insurance which is great too. Would highly recommend checking that out

Great car for the drive you did...., FYI - Expect the bill from Sixt within 6-12 weeks for a new wheel, standard practice to replace it on that type of car , I went through this 2 yrs ago on a 640d Gran Coupe, that came to 1523.39 Euro's......., easy way to avoid charges like that is rent with American Express, their Premium Car Rental Insurance will cover vehicles up to $100000.00 at $24.95 per rental period not per day.

Question: if you buy insurance from the car rental company or third party and something happens to the car, does that goes through the claim process which can potentially increase your own car insurance premium? Or they just take care of it on the spot without being reported.

Sixt has the nicest cars of all the major companies. But Hertz stepped up the game and now there are AMG GTS, still, Sixt is the way to go. And hell yeah, curbed wheels probably sound atrocious.. I once kinda clipped or touched the sidewalk with just the tires and it made a huge noise, without damage Oh yeah and considering „small companies“ there is ARNDT automobile in Germany, they are a slightly bigger company and do have exotic-ish cars. But Sixt is the way to go

Amex has a premium car rental coverage for $15 for the rental term, not per day, covers PDW type damage. My rental in Italy was scratched in some parking lot while it was parked. At the rental agency I left it and went my way with no hassle no charge. Recommend Kemwell for euro rentals with full insurance package bundled. After all, you need money left over for Italian speed cam tickets which inventively show up in your mail 6 mo later.

Yeah. I read about nightmares with small European rental companies so I rented a John Cooper Works Edition Mini a couple weeks ago from Hertz (Portugal). Declined insurance as my credit card claims they have CDW coverage and everything turned out fine. Only maybe quibble was that after I rented it I read a guy on a forum that said the very same Hertz at Lisbon airport charged him €150 for bringing back a dirty car, so I found a bucket and a rag and gave the car a quick street wash before taking it back. Rental guy gave the car an A-OK on inspection and I was done. It was like $30/day.

Car company I rent from says there's a $500 deductible on the credit card insurance. Never had to put that to the test thankfully. Must be tough rental companies because ours only considers it damaged it the scratch or dent is over about 2" or maybe 3". Most of the cars do have such damage and checked before we take it out.

In Europe, usually you are insured against damages to a point. The rest you have to put down a deposit for, known as the excess. Typically 600-1500 euros for a normal car. This is what a lot of rental companies seem to try and scam you out of. You can take additional insurance though called "Excess Insurance" for a fraction of what the rental car company charges for its full insurance and claim any money back from them that you have lost on your deposit.

You could have gotten excess insurance for a fortnight for about £25 or $30. You pay any excess damage - then claim back from the insurance - far cheaper than the cover they'll try to sell you at the rental desk. Stateside insurance won't cover you for Europe - but if you're lucky enough to have an Amex Plat card - I believe that they will cover you if you buy the rental with the card (please feel free to correct me if this is wrong/out of date).
