i-D Meets, Spring 23 cover star, musician and rapper, Headie One as he anticipates the release of his latest single ‘Martins Sofa’, discussing everything from his perfect breakfast dish, to his favourite Louis Vuitton suit made by Virgil Abloh for his Brits performance in 2021.
Returning to Broadwater Farm Estate, in North London, where he spent his childhood and teenage years; Headie One talks about love, loss and his journey so far surrounded by his closest friends who have accompanied his journey from the start - telling i-D, “I like to hope that my music can motivate people to make changes in their personal life, no matter what they’re dealing with, some sort of motivation to come out of it and take positive steps forwards. To be able to take a drastic U-turn on what’s expected of people who come from places like [Broadwater Farm] - not just myself, but for everyone”.

I’m happy for headie one came from a crazy background and made it out he might speak about mad ish but we come from areas that are like that we never made it like that,

@@therealjiggajheeze3507 I’m not a G at all I’m a dad of three mate ain’t got time to be no G, I spend my working and looking after my family, buying stocks and shares in my favourite companies, Collecting monthly and quarterly dividends, running a small online business and enjoying life I’m happy for all these guys, The truth is they wasn’t meant to make it out he’s doing better than me, but my grind is slow and consistent, I love seeing. Young black guys turning there life around and succeed and care for family I don’t know why you @ me for anyway

@@therealjiggajheeze3507 the reason I make it a racial thing is we or me as a blacks person the odds are stacked against us all the time we are always at the bottom of everything in life, And it might not be the right thing he’s pushing I would live a rapper to spit about buying ownership in blue chip companies Capital gains and dividends etc but for some reason that ain’t happening if I could rap I would speak about the pitfalls of life etc, Look at history slavery Jim Crow sus laws etc So the only way to succeed in life for me is to have ownership, Big up warren buffet someone I look up to if you don’t find a way to earn while you speak you’ll work until you die and I ain’t on that, grew up in Peckham south east London big up Giggs every time

I cannot understand how I-D can promote a message of positivity and inclusion and non-violence yet do an entire cover story on a literal criminal who has been imprisoned 4 different times for assault, drugs, possession of knives and violence. Interesting contradiction isn't it. I'm not as cavalier as you as I think it's probably a bit more complicated socioeconomically, and just in terms of Headie One himself as an artist as well as a criminal. Does feel glossed over at times.
