‘I’d love’ a nuclear reactor in my ‘backyard’: Jasmin Diab

Global Nuclear Security Partners Director Jasmin Diab says she would “love” to have a nuclear reactor in her backyard as the debate around the energy source continues to divide Australians.
Some experts believe the federal government will fail to meet their target of 82 per cent renewables by 2030.
“I’d love to - I’d love to have access to clean reliable energy 24/7, 365,” Ms Diab told Sky News.
“Being a nuclear professional, understanding how the technology has built intransient safety systems, and just how reliable it would be.
“It’s something that I would be quite happy to have.”

Safety regulations brought in after Fukishima and the rise of competing technologies have disrupted the economics of nuclear. Your figure of 60 years is optimistic. The oldest nuclear plant still operating is Beznau in Switzerland, at 55 years. This was after a 3 year refit that cost more than to build the original plant. Almost every steam turbine and many of the steam generators and control systems on current US nuclear plants have been replaced and the outages have taken from 6 months to two years. The 40 US units closed by mid-2021 - 30% of total nuclear grid connections - averaged 22 years There are windfarms in the US commissioned in the 1980s that are still operational. You can repower a wind or solar farm with no more than 5-10% loss of production during the process by refurbishing one turbine or one solar string at a time and often increase power by 10-15% and annual output by 25-150% due to technological advances.

Centralized energy sources, including nuclear power, tend to increase costs and provide a convenient tax base for governments. Decentralized electricity generation is a far better solution. Solar PV systems on every roof, paired with three days of battery storage, can address 90% of domestic power requirements at a lower cost. Nuclear power is one of the most expensive options available. In Europe, wind energy is more viable than solar, while in Australia, solar energy is more viable than wind. A mix of renewable energy sources is often the best approach. Large-scale nuclear power is ludicrously expensive. Small modular nuclear reactors could be less costly if they utilize off-the-shelf technology, but not if they require custom designs. At the end of the day, any approach that further centralizes power generation is a disaster for household energy independence.

You can have the nuke in your backyard and pay for it out of your own salary. The majority of nations won't meet 2030 emissions targets, no matter what system is in place. Large-scale nuclear will never occur. Dream on. Operational costs are minimal until you have to dispose of the nuclear waste. Modular SMR might have a future, but not in a major way. Renewables and battery technologies are advancing too quickly for nuclear to catch up cost-wise. Battery storage energy density is rapidly improving. Solar energy is falling in price along with wind. Aust is a massive country with a small population and can easily rollout renewables. Nuclear a lot more difficult, as Aust is so spread out, leading to many inefficiencies.

Nowhere in the world have new nuclear plants been installed on the sites of old coal plants. Coal and nuclear have different operational requirements. And nuclear is no guarantee of reliability. Canada and France have proved that. In 2022, France lost over half its nuclear capacity, forcing them to save power by switching off the lights on the Eiffel Tower. Canada lost 28% of its nuclear capacity for 5 years between 1998-2003

Until an expolsion happen or it was hit with a drone. It will be so dangerouse. The half life of U234 is 1000s of years and radiation cannot be stoopped. It can be reduced but not stopped. Lets do the math. A micro N plant @ 380million watts fits on 3970sqm of land(2xOK650 PWR's+plumbing+HPsteam turbine genies) specific output @ 96,000watts per sq metre. Solar farm for 380million watts (needs backup after dark by batteries that are net energy consumers anyway plus wind turbines, pray to the gods there is a breeze at night time), total coverage of greater than 2.1million sq metres, specific output @ 174watts per sq metre(commercial grade) less the power/energy lost due to Electrical Series Resistance built in to every metre of cabling infrastructure needed to connect it all, keeping it all free from dust and damage, high maintenance and partial outages etc and then the waste product where every solar panel degrades and requires replacement at least once before you need to refuel a Nuclear furnace once. Gees, novelty power generation stacks up eh

The foundations were well planned by outside countries years ago to get nuclear power in Australia for one reason they want accessibility to our uranium. It's coming and it will be controlled by China. China is building 150 nuclear plants in the next ten years at a rate of 4 years to build from ground up each plant. The Australian government being manipulated with aligning with Energy companies with Australian names but Chinese owned power suppliers who want Australian Uranium and its right under our noses . Heritage nsw needs to ask itself about who they protect its not the true custodians and knowledge holders of country .
