Ford also stopped making them because they couldn't meet newer emission standards, they were too heavy and they were too long for the newer truck designs.

Picked up an 86 c3500 GMC dump with a 6.2 for a buck 3-4 yrs ago and it's my daily driver work truck. She's ruff here an there but the great thing is it almost doesn't matter what breaks on it it'll still drive :)

You may not find them for 2 dollars but you can get these trucks anywhere for under 2000 bucks I see them for sale on craigslist for between 500 to 1000 all the time there not hard to get ahold of here in North Carolina. The ones around 2000 have little to no damage and very low mileage. The cheaper ones have higher miles and some body damage but not going to stop the truck from running and doing its job. I've pulled these engines apart with over 300k and the internals look almost brand new just keep the oil changed and change antifreeze every 3 years and you will get over 300k. on my 4.9l 300 inline big 6 that's the heart of my 1995 efi 5 speed trans f150. I've got over 300k on mine and it still runs like brand new. Best truck I've ever owned hands down. I plan to keep this truck for life even if I have to ever rebuild it I have 0 dents and the only rust is very light surface rust in the bed but nothing that can't be sanded and I will be putting a spray rhino bed liner.

I paid $300 for mine about ten yrs ago, my cousin got locked up and needed the money. I've never done anything to it, and it's been sitting out back for 2yrs, today I stuck a battery in it, gave the gas pedal a few pumps, and it started right up. Not a Ford-Guy, but I love this truck.

I've had many of the 80 to 86 Ford's. One of my favorite body styles and absolutely very easy to work on!

Love the ford 300 I6 and the ford trucks they came in. Currently the proud owner of a '93 4x4 with the I6.

Got an 86 F150 with a straight six, though its auto (wish it was manual). In a day and age where u need thousands of dollars worth of diagnostic equipment and coding software to complete basic tasks, its nice to have something that you can fix (if need be) with a basic small tool set. Great trucks no doubt, and i have no partiality towards Fords at all.

I got a 85 XL 4X4, manual transmision, stright six, long bed and dual fuel tank in Mexico City. I bought it about 300 bucks. We had to rebuild the engine because it had an stuck head valvule but everything else is in good condition. How rare is this truck? I mean in termns of equipment. Plus the truck got the "EXPLORER" badge on both sides of the bed.

I've seen them go 400K miles without major work. The trucks they were in were basically rotted away to almost nothing, but that engine would still start and run. You know why Ford doesn't make them anymore? Because if they did, you'd never buy one of their NEW g**damn trucks.

Absolutely tough proven! My last 300 I bought new was in 1993. 300k miles now burns 1 qt oil every 5,000 miles. Go figure, that’s why ford quit making them. Just way to good for today’s society.

Scotty, a friend of mine in high school (graduated in 04) had a powder blue f100 explorer around the same year he and his dad fully restored. One of the best looking trucks at golf and shooting practice.

@@jmccormick1490 The old 3-on-the-tree *IS* hard to find - even harder to find one that the original shifter isn't completely worn out. Most of the ones with a 3-speed were converted to floor shift for that reason. Pretty sure '82 was the last year for a 3-on-the-tree at Ford, and Ford was the last US automaker to offer one. The one I'd like to have is a 300 six mated to the old SROD. It's a four speed floor shift manual, but third is 1:1 and fourth is actually overdrive.

These 80-96 OBS Fords will run forever. Great rigs.

I wish I could find an old straight six like that with a standard transmission.

My 88 F-150 with a 300 six and 4-speed manual is coming up on 500,000. Still smooth and gets good mileage, but it is showing its age when you start it cold, the bottom end rattles for a second, it's due for a rebuild, even though, it doesn't use any oil or coolant

The only weak spot on them was the distributor. But that wouldn't give you trouble until well over 100k miles. I had one, and those 300 engines are bullet proof

@@ramosjaime11 The EGR tube that comes from the exhaust manifold has a tendency to corrode too. That will make the truck sound like it has straight pipes but the sound will be coming from the engine.

@@cayman9873 Yeah, from my experience GM vehicles have been great. Even the newer ones aren’t terrible, especially considering no new vehicles seem to be as good as the old ones.

My '93 F150 is by far the most dependable workhorse I've ever owned. With an oil pan leak now finally at 170,000 miles, it is still a great truck. These trucks are built solid and just plain last. I only wish I could buy another one new. The 302 ci. is one of the best engines and a great runner.

We had one of these in Orange. My husband drove it everywhere. Sad thing is he gave it to out 16 yr old and bought a new Chev. Then that boy sold it to get a CJ7 Jeep which lasted 6 months. Thanks for these reminders... You are 1 of a Kind guy‼️👊💪😉🇺🇸

I have an 88 Ford f150 30 kupit inch 300 with 676 thousand miles on it, working wonderfully, of coarse I do all the mechanics on it. Bought it 9 years ago for 1700 bucks. Brought me from Florida to Alabama moving stuff back in forth, multiple trips pulling boat to Gulf and river, still take it to work weekly. Most wonderful and Blessed to have it. Ya even ups trucks this engine is no joke it's a real bullet proof strong as hell engine. They even use them at air ports to run all the ground support equipment. These engine is the real deal that helped and is still helping to build America. I personally own one of these gems and it has over 300k on it and still runs like new. And will pull way more than recommend and not complain one bit.

@@Project-gr6zy like I've been told since I was a teenager this engine is pretty much a gas powered diesel engine. The two best engine hands down are the gasoline, LPG, natural gas, and CNG 4.9l inline 6 300 ci and the 7.3L v8 444ci Power Stroke diesel both engine are power houses that are unrivaled in the truck world. For there reliability and power but for me hands down the 300 is my choice for a engine in my truck because of its way cheaper than a diesel to repair and maintain.

Thank you so much for giving this truck the credit and admiration it truly deserves. My pops bought me a 1983 Ford F100 as my first car/truck and I can say with 100% certainty I'm never letting it go. The 4.9L I6 is truly an unbreakable engine. It ran for over 10k miles with a vacuum leak and it kept chugging along like a tank. Its a thing of the past but yet way more durable than anything built today. SO happy I saw this video today.

My 1984 F150 was the best vehicle I ever owned, period. Basic pickup with a 302 V8, four speed OD toploader. No frills, whatsoever. I sold it at 170K miles and lamented selling it thereafter.

I want Scotty’s videos to be mandatory curriculum in my kids and their kids high school.

Ford ranger 1984 v6 2.8l was the best truck I ever had.

Hey scotty I have a 1980 f350 dually and I am fixing the best up. Taking the fiberglass rear fenders off and building custom steel fenders to replace them but I am following the original pattern somewhat. I'm working hard on restoring it because the last owner neglected it in every way.

Love those big straight sixes! GM 292, Ford 300, et al. Love them!

i had a f 100 and i paid 2k for it back in 1995 it was a 1993 model i put 300k miles before the transmission went out in 2019.

Currently still own and drive a 1983 Ford F100.. The last year of the F100. have had it for about 35 years. Straight six 300. It is now 40 years old. Over 300,000.. still runs strong ! Ford's straight 6 300 engine is one tough engine !! Matched with the AOD automatic.

By the way Scotty, how about doing a show on the 98' Ford Explorer XLT V6. Mine was a GEM, 325k original engine and Transmission..... Never a problem until the second Car hit me while stopped. One day on the Freeway it just made a loud noise and stopped. The mechanic said it was Toast $$$ to fix. It still looks perfect sitting in the back covered up. Very little body damage or rust, perfect inside leather, clean one owner. I just can't take it to the Dump. I love it like my kid! 💓💓

I bought a 1981 F-100 in 1995 for $1900. It had 75,000 miles.2wd short box with the 300 -6 cyl and a 3 sod manual with 4th as overdrive.I drove it for 12 years.Had to do a clutch,and the water pump like 3 times.I got upwards of 25 mpg if I was on flat ground.I even put a chrome tube grill just like the one you show on this video.Thanks.

You don't want a $2 car, partner. Them's the most expensive kind of cars you can buy. The guy who owns that thing in the video got it from family. If that thing was sitting in a used car lot, it'd be $3K easily, just because it runs, ain't completely trashed, and can haul stuff.

replaced a v8 in a 77 f150 and a 85 f350 dually with 300 6 cylinders. Both pulled like bulldozer. BEST vehicles I ever owned!. Well, my 87 wrangler with a straight 6 4.2 and my 90 Volvo with a straight 4 cylinder were pretty good too.

I have a 1981 f100 with the 300inkine 6 and a 3 speed, it used to have the 3 on the tree but the shifting cone is wore and I put a floor shifter, it’s completely restored with insulation everywhere brand new carpet and door panels with a touch screen stereo and a white leather bench seat with leather door panels and it runs amazing, never has let me down, and I get pretty good gas mileage once I rebuilt the engine, but before it got about 15, now around 18 if I don’t put my foot in it, super comfortable truck I put new weather stripping everywhere and it’s nice to ride in, with all the insulation and the twin I beam suspension it rides like a luxury car of the era, the step side is also a nice look and it’s a real head turner, I’ve even had a conversation with my high school security gaurd about it before

Bought me a 1966 Ford Ltd, 390 always been a GM guy! Now I question my whole life. Ha ha

390s are awesome. I love that you can just give 'em a little gas, and they pull strong and smooth without all the noise and drama. My old T-bird had one. 80-90 mph was easy to achieve. No sense of speed or effort at all. Just tip into it and roll....

I was smiling all the way through this video, because my uncle recently gave me his 1996 F150 long bed with relatively low mileage on the legendary 300 CID engine. It's got a regular cab and a long bed! They don't make'em like that anymore. I had to replace the entire rear suspension, front brake lines, and front wheel bearings right away, but it was clear from the get-go that it was a solid, reliable workhorse - everything you need in a truck, nothing you don't. And gobs of "old school cool". Now it needs new brake pads and probably rotors too, I still need to replace the rear fuel pump, and I would like to replace the front suspension 'just because' since the rear end is new. But these old trucks are easy to work on and just keep going and going even when you neglect them (as my uncle can attest to). I plan to drive it until they outlaw gasoline :-)

Bought brand new 1980F150 XLT 300 straight 6 automatic back in the day. It was first year of a brand new body style. Ran it for a couple decades and finally sold it. Sure wish I still had it, those were the days....

I've officially been enrolled in Scotty Kilmer school of mechanics.

I am 17 and my first car is a 1978 F-100 flareside with the 300 Straight 6. I have been been restoring it for the last 2 years. I had to rebuilt the engine because piston rings were gone. Before the rebuild that thing would run great as long I kept oil in it. Now that the engine was rebuilt (After 100,000 miles on the motor) that thing is better than any new truck on the market. I love the 300, honestly I think it is the best engine Ford ever produced. I will take 1978 Ford 300 over my 1996 Ford 351W everyday.

My dad has a 87 Ford Ranger STX extended cab...top of the line. Extended cab, manual transmission and push button 4 wheel drive. 124k original miles...2.7 v6.

The cylinder deactivation, and even worse, the "start-stop" functions, where the car shuts down when you come to a complete stop, you just know a) that cannot be good for the engine and, b) it's just another thing to go wrong. I think they do it to meet fuel efficiency standards (?).

Mine has 3.25 rear end, 3 speed automatic, 2wd, and 30.5x10.7r15 (265/75r15) tires and I average between 15-16mpg (if I keep her at 65 or under) at 60mph she runs right at 2k rpm.

Yep, when I was a pizza delivery driver I had to replace my starter from all the starting/stopping... Then I started leaving my car on, while parked at customer's houses. You only get so many starts from a starter motor. Funny thing... my starter burned out literally while I was delivering to an auto repair shop. Guess who fixed it.

COOL! The SLANT\6 and the AMC 4.0L are also legendary! Remember seeing these used at Delta Airlines 'TUG' brand baggage pullers and they were super reliable and had tons of torque to pull multiple carts and mail cans: one awesome INLINE American six that is bombproof.

I have an 86 Ford pickup with the straight 6 in it. Can't kill that motor. It used to be my everyday work truck. Now it's my winter/ plow truck. I've had it since 1995.

I love my '88 Ford F-150 with the 300c.i I6 as long as the battery has power and gas in the tank, it starts every time and runs fantastic!

I used to own an 85 F-150 with a 300 inline 6 and I used to use that bastard to pull over trees when they were hanging over houses when I was cutting them down the low end torque on those things is honestly astounding

I’m never that lucky in life 😂....been looking for 1 of these

I learned to drive on my dads 1965 Chevy trk 250 straight six with "three on the tree" shifter

I have a rust free 1983 Ford f150 with the inline 6 and manual tranny. Runs great and looks great, dependable and simple

UPS loved that engine. It just never stops. I had a Granada with the 250 in it and it was also amazingly good. Built before the government got into the car business with all their regulations.

Ah, those 85 MPH malaise-era speedometers, from the days of the "double-nickel" speed limit. That truck can probably bury the speedo given enough time.

I got the impression that my '82 could probably reach 90 if I really wanted it to, but I never ran it that fast, and 'speed' wasn't really what the 300 inline was built to do anyway. Their forte was durability, reliability, low maintenance, and off-idle torque - all of which they achieved, in spades. It could roll at 60-65 while loaded, without any sense of 'effort', and that was sufficient. The 85 mph speedos never bothered me anyway.

I’ll give him $5,000.oo for it!

It's a 6 Straight.

This thing is cheap and easy to work on. I spent 225 bucks on the starter, starter solenoid, mechanical fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and water pump. Smoked for about 20 minutes, then it ran like a champ.
