It's because he's not just "unemployed" but preparing to take the Bar exam to be a lawyer which he passes. And there's no perfect translation for the word she used but it's somewhere in between "unemployed" and "bum". It is rude to use it on spouse and you can see she realized it right after she said it from her expression. Yes, him being petty is too much and that's the funny part but what she said is not nice. And it has nothing to do with men vs women. It's equally rude going the other way.

I'm from New Zealand we have a system called Koha( gift) we write down everything people give as a gift including money food hiring equipment facilities and anything they give as a gift. And we PAYE it back when they have a celebration wedding 💍 or funeral, to the same amount. This is part of our Maori culture of NZ.
