Coming from the aerospace industry, I believe you really need to start with a block diagram and making proper schematics for the wiring. You can lay out some component plates with wire pathing. With the correct use of nice MS connections, you will have the option to remove said component plates for ease of access. But ill reiterate, proper schematics will be key for you. I would recommend something like Visio or Kicad.

I built my own lighting harness for a dirt bike dual sport conversion. My schematic was super useful during assembly and any future troubleshooting will be cake. Can't recommend enough to draw it first

Unless your like rob or me or most of the rest of the world. And that schematic gets drawn 17 times, ends up being reworked 38 times, and in the end gets redone again. With the schematic right there. Because we don't have 97 engineers engineering the crap outta everything before it's even started. Why because we can barely find the peanut butter and jelly and mtn we were just eating a few steps ago

not to knock down the professionalism youve grown to have and handle, but its still just insane to think that this is just one dude (ableit a team with him) figuring out all this crazy shit and how to make it all work and preform way beyond expectations until the expectations can become calculated and pin pointed. The progress made and continuing to be made is truly astounding and amazing. From a guy who wanted to build a crazy thing to a crazy guy who is making his own billet parts with such tight tolerances its just all crazy

So how many RPMs is redline? Missing firewall, a fuel regulator in the cabin, and I keep thinking "ahem, .. ballistic shield, ballistic shield. I thought these were a requirement on drag racers above a certain RPM? You do not want to be near a flywheel disintegrating at 11,000 RPM. Rob, I'd like you to be around for a while! Now that safety is out of the way, I love seeing the wiring work that you are doing, and the new Haltech Nexus R5 is very interesting!

working in aviation, all of these connecting terminals are indeed challenging to work with. Pinning and depinning these terminals will make you realize that any error will cost more time and money just to fix and get right. Godspeed Rob.

I work on cnc machines for a living….. I know exactly what it takes to keep something like this running…. The machines I work on make the parts for this car and every vehicle on the planet…. Engineers just copy and paste from others, service engineers fix your mistakes! Rob has done nothing but brought dreams and valuable knowledge to every willing to watch….

I took a job working on cables and thought it would be simple. I was so wrong. Cables are the unsung hero of any system. They have to be durable and flexible, hard parts, soft parts, mechanical and electrical connections, data lines, impedance, shielding, peak and constant current ratings, and temperature ratings. They are last part anyone things of but needed before you can test a system. The stuff MIL parts are rated for us no joke and I look forward to seeing the art of the final harness.

Before adding the firewall, a solid mid-plate would give the whole drivetrain a bit more lifespan. With a light engineering, it could also mount a bearing for the front drive shaft. Just to take some stress from the transfer case. Those cases don't grow on trees no more.

He's constantly making mistakes and not doing things right and learning from it. To act like he knows everything and is some master is misinformed at best and downright ignorant at worst.

THIS is why having an IT guy doing the wiring for a car just makes sense, Rob you of anyone will understand and appreciate the beauty of cableporn done right! I swear, cabling up a rack or datacenter uniformly is therapeutic and extremely satisfying.

Seeing wiring always stresses me out to my deepest core, like I can feel it in my heart it stresses me so much

I am an aviation maintenance technician working on 757s, and we use those "cannon plugs" literally everywhere on the planes.

I am currently doing the wiring harness for my small block Chevy and I take great inspiration from you Rob. I may not have the budget you do but I look carefully at what you do and try to apply to my build as much as possible within my budget. I like how you think ahead of time to remove the engine so you put connectors to easily remove it and I also plan on doing the same. Thanks for doing what you do Rob

I've really enjoyed all the side projects, its kept things fresh and fun and I'm guessing its kept things from getting stale for yourselves but I'd really love to see the 4 rotor all buttoned up this year!

See... a lot of people would look at your old harness and think "wow... that is the worst job I have ever seen"... meanwhile, you KNOW what everything does despite how all over the place it is. What I see is a mad genius... anyone who has had to trace a custom harness will know how hard it is to understand what goes where and what everything does... even if your the one who made it. Meanwhile, your here looking at this and you have pretty much every function memorized and know what does what exactly. You are so much more knowledgeable than a lot of people give you credit for.

I really look up to your method and trial and error method. I've been taking a swing at making my own wiring harness, granted mine is for a snowmobile, not a car, the school of thought is the same. Thank you for showing all this, it really helps the confidence of the home garage guys!

I actually love this stuff. Just wish I had the funds to do it all right. Slowly building my wiring tools collection.

I'm guessing you really only needed to cut like 20ish wires but the shear joy of getting to cut about a 150 was too much to pass up. Makes for good content Rob, the idea of a perfect remap of the wiring schematic also is fun to watch. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

In the future, if your making a new exhaust manifold & Isaiah wants an intake redo for the 4-rotor lol, then would you do a video explaining reasoning for certain design attributes (ex: runner lengths / tapers, step diameters, collector choke) for efficiency like pulse tuning???

Your on the right track!! I've been an electrician on jets for 13 years and I cringed at first. But then I was amazed you were able to peice that together with software differences. Canon plugs are awesome. Look up EMI sheilding for your signal wires? You can run power next to signal wire without disrupting your signal!! The aerospace engineers that commented I have had many WTF moments fixing issues with your schematicts without ever seeing the plane in person. Hes living my dream!! Seen every video of build since 2019 and didnt realize how bad it was watching you do it 1 obstacle at a time. Get a firewall first thing to burn up is you then wires!!!

Cable management and drawing your own schematics for the wiring will make it easier for future improvements.

Thanks rob I really am first of al for showing other ways to approach a project I am 17 now and my biggest/ baddest habbit is that I want to do things to fast and you talking about doing things step by step made me realize why I want to go to fast. I always try to make my own projects and do them the best I can but I do them in a fast mind set and in that way I have lost expensive things by making simple mistakes. It's good to see you stepping up. If I had that project and a reasonable budget, I would have started with as much custom harness as I dared. When I would go to clean it up later I wouldn't have such a big job ahead of me but I have more wiring experience than you started out with. A great example of a mill spec car is some of the earlier tesla roadsters, there was so much care put into the wiring that it's just beautiful to work on, that's the beauty of mill spec, the satisfaction of working on it

Rob, I just got home from a 10 hour day of messing with a low voltage wiring rats nest and 0:48 is what I come home to. Love all the builds but thanks for the light laughter over my mini panic attack. xD

Everyone commenting on the wiring and I am over here just glad there is going to be more sheet metal between Rob and the engine. Hopefully a trans tunnel will be fabed up soon.

From watching you from Michigan with your rotor engines to the 4 rotor and now cleaning it up with newer tech shows you know what you was doing to get it to run. I hope you challenge the Hoonunicorn again when you finish. That’ll be the greats rematch to see.

Cars are art, but you get a do-over if you want it. Its a nice feeling when you go back and do it better. You are an artist, my guy.

What I typically tell anyone who asks, I say "nothing is difficult, just time consuming" I think you can relate to that. Whether it's fabrication, body work, engine building or wiring. Slow and steady wins the race.

You've inspired me. I'm going to build my own swap harness to put a different ECU in my car. Trying to figure out if I want the ECU under the cowel (it's an OEM ecu off a similar but newer engine) or in the cabin.

@@boostaddict_ what kind of car? Some are more prone to leaves, pine needles, and dirt/water accumulating in them. Even though they may be "sealed" I've seen many factory/aftermarket ecus suffer from constant exposure to water whether in the engine bay or cowl. If you can get it behind the glove box or dash imo it's always a cleaner look without worrying about something happening to it

props to you for doing that. I wouldn't have the guts to do that in my car, starting from scratch. It makes sense why you're doing it but still, great work.

You’re right about project cars, there’s a lot of people thinking about SEMA quality builds with limited budget and high expectations, however, the rapid iteration is one of the most easiest ways to get shit done and working properly.

Bad Obsession Motorsports had the same "So insanely custom it's overwhelming" experience with their Project Binky build, especially when it came to the wiring, since they decided to include the vast majority of every electronic feature from the newer car's wiring loom all jammed into a new ECU and a fuse and relay panel cobbled together from two different vehicles. Building a new custom firewall and transmission tunnel will be quite the challenge, particularly since you'll need to make sure to place sufficiently large flat panel sections for all of your connectors to mount into.

Should have done a weigh in on how much all the removed wiring came to. Would have been interesting to see a weight difference between old and new harness.

We want more rx8 content!

I always do stuff in a bit of a hacky way to get builds running and then go through and refine stuff, costs a bit more but what you learn by doing it even once is worth it.
