This was super helpful, Marie. Thank you for your methodical approach to testing each emulsifier. I have been playing with recipes in your book and blog for a few weeks, now. I'm having lots of fun brewing up potions. I will admit to not wanting to buy a ton of ingredients that seemed similar so I picked BTMS-50 to buy. Now, I just try everything with BTMS-50 because I like how it feels - for skin and haircare. I think I'll keep using it as my emulsifier until it fails in a recipe. Thank you!

How intriguing! Thanks for sharing these. I've enjoyed emulsifying wax NF and btms-50 the most in emulsified body butters - the cationic goodness is definitevly a huge plus as I can use them as pre-shampoo hair mask. On the other hand, I'm positively surpsised how similar they can be in plain lotions and emulsified body butters. One would expect different based on marketing / all the stuff suppliers share.

4 of these are non-PEG 😉 That said; the concern usually brought up in regard PEGs is the potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane. 1,4-dioxane is NOT an ingredient in PEGs. Think of it a bit like M. bovis (a bacterial species of the M. tuberculosis complex); this is not an ingredient in milk, it's a potential contaminant, and steps are taken to reduce that contaminant, which is why we generally do not worry about contracting tuberculosis from milk anymore. 1,4-dioxane a well-known potential contaminant, and the industry works hard to reduce that contamination as much as possible. This is true for a lot of ingredients, and is one reason why the grade of an ingredient is important. For example, the allowable concentrations for mercury and lead in iron oxides is much lower in cosmetic grade iron oxides than in industrial grade. There's more information here (www.cosmeticsinfo.org/ingredients/14-dioxane/) that includes discussion on concentration and dosage-something a lot of websites don't discuss, which is crazy when dose is critically important when determining whether or not an ingredient is unsafe. The European Commission Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety concluded "1,4-dioxane amounts in cosmetic products are considered safe for consumers at trace levels of ≤10 ppm". The Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate sold by Lotion Crafter is declared to comply with this-and on top of that, you wouldn't be applying that ingredient directly to the skin, so anything you'd actually encounter would be even less concentrated. In short, I am not worried about PEGs :)

  • @aninditab57

Ooh i cant believe it took me till now to watch this video! I've the cetearyl alcohol (and) cetearth-20 emulsifier as that was the one that was affordable to me + i was just starting out on formulating 😁 i typically do love it and using it at a higher range did make the finished formulation more thick than necessary, so I've learnt to pare down the usage rate. What i definitely love about this emulsifier is that it is slow to thicken, like you said, and that helps a ton. The soaping can be a turn off, it's annoyed me so many times 😂 I'm definitely aiming for the glyceryl stearate (and) peg-100 stearate once this bottle of emulsifier finishes.

I just used the soft and silky wax last night for the first time and so far I have not experienced any soaping. I did, however use ver little, as my original formula is already thick without it. I am curious if the amount used and the other ingredients amount make a big difference.

I would assume less water, more oils and probably a higher percentage of olivem 1000.

Hi Marie, Would you take on the challenge of formulating a cold cream cleanser without mineral oil or petroleum derivatives? I've come across a few creators on youtube who have tried Pond's Cold Cream Cleanser, and kinda rave about it. It is a similar method to the oil cleansing/ cleansing balm method, however the cream is a water-in-oil emulsion and doesn't turn to milk. It's removed with a facial wipe, or I like to run a face towel under hot water (not too hot) , and lightly steam my face with it to remove all the cream. I've made a cold cream myself, based on a 1911 Recipe, and I like it so far but I think it needs finessing. What would you do? Thank you.

I'm allergic to hair conditioner, so I decided I would try to make my own. I could test the ingredients for a reaction 1 by 1. The first thing I'd do is just BTMS-25 and water (so really 3 things in there but cetyl alcohol, certearyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are in stuff like my suncream, which I don't react to) The idea was build from there, test each stage, add ingredients 1 by 1, and then when I have a reaction, remove that ingredient Trouble is, I reacted to just BTMS-25 and water. So now I'm lost. :/

It's impossible to say without having your entire formulation, but I'd try less fatty thickeners and/or less butters. That rubbery feeling you're mentioning can be caused by using more butters than liquid emollients. Good luck!

I have a question for u. Why is my beeswax all of a sudden giving me a hard time. No matter how hot I make them when melting them they actually harden back up as soon as my body butter cools off. I melted it to 145°F and as soon as I cooled it down those beads reformed and I had beeswax pellets through out my butter. I took 2 years formulating this body Butter. I did it for my so his eczema was so bad in the winter his skin would get so chapped that his skin would crack n bleed. He can’t stand the slightest bit oily. I did tweak it and he listen it better then before. N I mailed myself one to make sure it holds exactly like my beeswax did. My beeswax is 4 years old. And the beeswax clumps. It has a sticky damp feel to it. I bought ten pounds. I don’t know why cause in a 24 Oz batch I only use .5oz. I just increased my cocoa butter and I adjusted the corn starch. But I wanna know why that happened? I’ve never had beeswax feel like that at least not the processed white pellets. What r ur thoughts, can beeswax go bad? What do u think.

Unfortunately, beeswax is one of the most frequently adulterated ingredients on the market, often cut with other much cheaper and easier to obtain waxes; sometimes "beeswax" doesn't even contain any genuine beeswax at all when analyzed. This explains why beeswax can seem incredibly variable in its behavior, not behaving as beeswax should with respect to melting point and other aspects, when otherwise it would be virtually the same every time. Def make sure you're buying your beeswax only from very reputable vendors who stand behind the purity of their products. Hopefully you've already been able to come up with a good body butter formulation for your SO since you posted this a while ago.

The INCI for Polawax is Emulsifying Wax NF; I didn't test it because the original formulation used Emulsifying Wax NF :)

Why do you say btms is natural?

I didn't because it isn't :) Here's the relevant section of the script: "Today we’ll be testing 2 natural emulsifying waxes: Ritamulse SCG and Olivem 1000; 2 cationic ones: BTMS-25 and BTMS-50 (I’ve pre-ground both of these so they melt faster)..."
