Being a northern Californian this episode makes me appreciate how rust free my 03 Yukon still is. Moved to California from Ohio 7 years ago. It still blows my mind how an 18 year old vehicle here has less rust than a 2 year old vehicle from the northeast.

@@shadowopsairman1583 I drove my 99 Tahoe here from Ohio. It has 240k+ mileage but runs perfect and has a new transmission yet nobody will buy it here because of the rust. I purchased the yukon from a soccer mom who kept in a garage and never drove it in snow... the thing barely even ever got wet. Even the brake lines still look new. When I replaced the brake lines in the Tahoe they literally crumbled apart in my hands lol...

I put cosmoline rp342 on my 98 firebird formula that I bought when I was 16. It was completely rust free when I bought it and after 3 michigan winters, the underside is still perfect. I finally got a winter truck but I'm glad cosmoline kept my firebird perfect.

You don’t want paint over an old frame. It flakes then holds salt and moisture and ruin the frame quicker. Nice work looks good!

I have 5 years experience with RP-342 in the NH salt. Its the perfect choice for GM frames because the factory coating is also a wax. If you spray oil over the black GM factory wax it will melt making things worse. The fluid film company says not for use on GM frames. But people don’t know that. You will need a second coat of RP-342 cosmoline in a year then less and less touchups after that. You’re better off with a piece of cardboard and use the sprayer nozzle not the stray. Drips less. Job goes quicker. You can get a spray wand for the can but not easy because it’s a male can. Then you can put it in the frame and just pull it along as you spray. It’s the perfect way to do it. Fluid film wands won’t work. However RP-342 not so good for small tiny areas like seams. Because it’s thicker it doesn’t get down and seams very good. That’s a good place for an oil spray

So if in the future you wanted to "properly" prep and undercoat your truck, is that fluid film easy enough to remove? I'm in a dilemma because I don't have time to properly prep everything for a good undercoat, but I don't want to hose it down in fluid film if it's gonna be a bear to clean off later. Thanks

@@seandeterman2499 Yes A degreaser and power washer will clean it off. But in my opinion Fluid film is far superior to a rubberized undercoating which will trap moisture and rust underneath it where it will rust and you won’t even see it happening. Fluid film will creep back into stone chips and displaces moisture which will prevent rust from happening

FYI, CRC Rust Inhibitor is the also cosmoline and it is the least expensive per ounce of any I’ve found. A 10oz bottle is like $11 and if you buy in bulk even a little cheaper. It isn’t black so that is a nice feature of the RP but most stuff I don’t care about color underneath.

As far as going in the frame look into taking the tahoe to Krown Rust Protection, they have an oily fluid the company made that is a drying agent and a rust preventative spray, I just got my 2004 and 2005 tahoes done by them and everyone that uses them swears by the stuff. They spray it in your frame, on the whole undercarriage, in your rockers, doors, trunk, hood, and they even take your taillights out to get into the quarter panels better. They also spray under the hood along the inner fenders, core support, firewall. I highly recommend these guys, I went to the one near Utica New York, the town is Marcy. I did a lot of research before I went with them and there are plenty of great youtube videos explaining the process.

It's barely noticeable, but after you pressure washed the frame there were a lot of spots of fresh metal on the outside of your rusted areas. That's lifted paint that was next in line to have rust form. If you do your pressure wash with a turbo nozzle, the varying angle of attack provided by the rotating nozzle would have lifted up much more. It would have exposed all of the rust covered by paint that you cannot see. And if you have one of the cheap amazon drain jetting kits for your pressure washer, you could use that to flush out all the dirt/debris inside your fenders, frame box sections, and with the rotating nozzle they come with, it will perform just like a turbo nozzle and blast away all the lifted paint and scale inside.

But for me I don’t have the time on my hoe.plus the cancer has all ready started on the frame for me.Key to reduce the salt aggravation on your vehicle is not to park it in a warm garage above 0 degrees Celsius in the winter. Actually rust is not active in the winter when it’s very cold outside, it’s starts in the spring when the temperatures rises. In southern Ontario we are in the same heavy snow belt as New York and we also get the same rock salt and sodium brine mixture in our roads also.

por15 is what I think most professionals reach to when doing this job for better longevity, but shits expensive

This stuff is better than por15. It flakes off because it hardens. Cosmoline will self heal and does an amazing job of preventing corrosion

So what is that deal that goes from shock to shock, mine does not have that, is it a type of stabilizer?

If you're talking about the bar across the lower area that's the rear stabilizer bar. It connects from the sway bar links to the frame. If you bought it used the previous owner probably had it removed.
