Skyward Sword had a unique distance rendering system. Farther objects become soft round pixilations, giving a feeling of Impressionism. The art style choice fits that rendering system. They actually worked on the quality of it in the HD version. A lot of people never noticed the Impressionism art style, but that's what gave Skyword Sword it's unique feel and soft, chill vibes.

The art style is inspired by Impressionism. They've even applied it to depth of field in a mini bokeh kinda way. Nintendo is pretty good at using art style to cover up their consoles' weaknesses, which help the games' graphics hold up pretty well in the future.

I hear people say they didn't like the world below the clouds because it was too linear. But I remember the idea was to take some of the parts people love about dungeons and bring it to the over world. Think about the volcano area you had to figure out how to make your way a certain location. It wasn't a direct path. You had find those mitts to dig around in the ground. Or fight a mini boss to get past a bridge over the lava. The time stones in the desert area were a lot like dungeon puzzles.

I had the exact opposite experience to BeatEmUps. I have always been a motion control hater, but decided to try this game because I need more Zelda in my life. Out of curiosity I started out my adventure using motion controls just to see “how they felt”. But my initial idea was using button controls as my main way of playing. Finally the motion controls stuck with me and I quite liked them. I had basically zero of the frustrations in this vid. Exactly, after a while of launching the game, I couldn't emulate it due to the movement control. Total frustration! Today I have a Switch and a few days ago I acquired the title never played before, I was outraged by the mapping of the buttons because to rotate the camera you have to hold a button and not the mapping option to change it. I ended up giving the motion controls a try and was surprised by how intuitive they are and how much I would miss out if I just played with the buttons.

Gotta be honest, even despite needing to reset sometimes, I feel like you weren’t using the motion very good in your demonstrations. I’m not that surprised it wasn’t working. The motion controls need to be reset more because of course it doesn’t have a sensor, but work more accurate and fast when it’s centered correctly. Aim your sword slowly and then swing. Don’t make big crazy movements when flying or swimming. Move slowly back and forth on tightropes (you can run on them btw). And press reset whenever you’re about to use motion controls. Just get used to pressing it preemptively, especially if you’ve changed your position. You don’t even have to point at the screen, recenter button will recenter to whatever your current position is so you can still be pretty comfortable in whatever spot you’re in. Seriously, speed runners are still playing the game the exact same way they did on Wii with no noticeable difference or drop in quality with the controls, other than pressing recenter sometimes. Which is easier than pressing Z target for every fight. Still, I’m glad you were able to enjoy it with buttons. That’s why it’s great to have the option.

Great review and glad you enjoyed the game! I kept playing with the motion controls for a few hours in the game to get better at them, and I did, so I’m used to them, they are easy, and enjoyed the moments of swords fighting and small moments like pulling the master sword out of the ground and jumping in the air to slam down my blade on an enemy. I had to reset the calibration with the tap of the button every once in a while, but I got used to doing it like instinct.

I have to say, a little bit in depth as to why the Wii Remote had better motion in comparison to the Switch’s version, is due to there being 3 methods of keeping track of where the remote is, The Infrared of The Wii Sensor Bar, The Wii Remote’s internal gyroscope, and the secondary gyroscope from the Wii Motion Plus Accessory.

The joycons don't need to be pointed at the screen to calibrate, you can choose whatever starting position you want. I usually just rest my joycons on my lap and sometimes even cross my arms 🤷🙅

I actually liked both control scemes. When i used motion controls I got used to hitting y it became second nature and when I used button controls and then switch back to motion I was still holding down the l forgetting im using motion controls. For me it became muscle memory with these things.

I use motion controls although it is very frustrating when you're flying. The free camera movement and a separate attacking control does it for me.

SSHD is a way better, more polished version of the original, but despite being without a doubt, the definitive edition of the game, it still shouldn't be $60. So does 3D All Stars and half of the Wii U ports that add a bit of content.

I'm begging them to re-release the hd Zelda ports from the Wii u, and I'd pay $60 each for them again, no joke, a portable twilight princess would be amazing

Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 are the only ports that I can justify spending $60 on. I bought some of the others, but I always regretted buying them when I could’ve just played the Wii U version. (And 3D All Stars, but only because I never played Sunshine and my copy of Galaxy stopped working) Also, on Amazon you can get Skyward Sword HD for $50, the same price as Wind Waker HD.

5:44 - yeah, the Wii had a sensor bar. Kinda makes me wonder if Nintendo ought to revive some form of the Wiimote / sensor bar combo. Although I had less problems with the motion controls than you did, I'm fine with them. Although from the clips it's apparent you have a very different . . . technique.

From my playing I learned small but quick movements work best. Before I was getting both my wrists and elbows strained but after enduring for hours I found a synergy that feels so natural neither gets strained that I can play for long periods of time with 0 straining. Skyword Sword is best for the patient and esperimentative

lol that intro was great. I'm new to Zelda games (played BOTW as my first zelda game late 2020) and thoroughly enjoying playing skyward sword (exclusively w/ button controls lol)

The art style was supposed to look like a painting :) And this is my favorite Zelda after Breath of the Wild. I didn’t have any problems with the motion controls. I recenter often though cuz there’s no bar. I really don’t like the buttons. Maybe I just have to use them more but it’s super difficult for me and took me longer to do simple things. I also play like how I did on the Wii and press the button the recenter the camera often. I used my GameStop points to only pay $40 for this game 😎 I didn’t want to pay $60 for a remaster.

I’ve noticed with the motion controls on the switch you REALLY have to recalibrate the motion controls every couple hours to keep them functional

In the video there is this really sweet remix for skyward sword's main theme, does anyone know its origin? You can hear it around 13:25 in the video and I can't find it in the description.
