I Caught SWAMP THING!! Maryland Blue Crabs & Striped Bass

Ойын-сауық

This day I headed out on the Jon Boat with fishing rods and 30 crab traps. It was November 2023. The water Temp was 54 at the surface. I tried fishing and crabbing. Hard to do both but I'm glad I did! The Crabbing wasn't bad considering this was my last trip of the year. I caught Swamp Thing! This crab looked like it already started it's winter hibernation. The fishing wasn't fire, but I caught my biggest Bay Striper of the year!

Haven’t said thanks for the videos in a long time. So THANKS, for the videos. Wish I was younger and closer by because I would love fishing everyday. But I’m 72 and live in California. Far away from you. Thanks again! Hope the family is ok! Susan😊

I'm in Jersey and I live on the Barnegat Bay right behind IBSP and LBI. Everyone thinks about striper fishing for epic blitzes in the surf but most people don't realize this bay stays full of hold over schoolie sized bass. There's nothing more fun then killing these stripers in the 20 to 24 inch range on lighter tackle then we take to the surf or fish out of a boat off shore. In 40 years fishing and crabbing I have never seen anyone drop those crab trabs like that with floats. Everyone just sits there anchored with the traps tied off on the boat. And it doesn't make sense sitting anchored with 6 traps covering the area around the boat because setting them like this lets you hit several good spots at once👍

I grew up down in Virginia Beach and now live in south Jersey. I always found it weird people in NJ didn’t do this. Anyway, I set out a bunch of traps one year and went back to collect them after founder fishing for an hour or two, and all my six boxes were empty save two. Those two had five and six in each, my guess is that people were poaching my traps. Maybe that’s why?

@@smelltheglove2038 probably especially if it's a summer tourist month. The tourist come down and act like they're entitled to everything. They would raid my commercial traps all the time. Once I pulled up on a boat while they were literally in the middle of emptying one of my traps tied on a long line of 50 traps. They got nasty and threatened me with violence when I told them to dump that bucket out. I video taped the whole thing including threatening me so I followed them in. On the way in I called the marine police who was waiting on land at the boat ramp. After seeing the video of them emptying my trap into their boat and toss the trap over without even closing it and then threaten to ram my boat the marine police who are a division of the State Police arrested the two jokers and impounded their boat and the trailer with everything in it. I wouldn't agree to an offer they made before court to drop the charges and made them face the judge who saw the video. I had commercial license so the state doesn't go easy on these people coming from the city and poaching especially when they're also stealing from baymen who feed their family and pay a lot of money for this licence. I would've normally just said screw you (for lack of better words) and try you forget about it being it's not the first time they've been raided but just the fact they weren't decent enough to latch the trap closed it pushed me overboard (pun intended). Too many times I'd pull the line and they were empty because people steal the crabs and toss it over real fast without latching the lids shut so not to get caught. Well in court the judge ordered him to pay me $500 restitution 😎 and between drinking in the boat, theft, no life jackets on their kids, no fire extinguisher, safety flares, air horn and several other tickets they got, the marine police really lit them up with citations that few dozen crabs they had, that were tossed back in the water anyway, it cost them over $7,000 👍 🤣😭. I've never seen them back since that summer. I'd like to think they had to sell the boat to cover the fines. Or they couldn't afforded the impound charges and the boat was left in the impound lot? Who knows but at least they're not my problem anymore. 😎

@@jeanponce2017 such a shame. We can’t have anything nice. I just use the line method now, tie a drum stick to a crab line and wait for the tug, haha. Still, I can get a dozen or so in a morning so it’s productive enough for my family to have a crab dinner. If I bring my son we can get maybe two dozen. As for the poachers, I called the fish and game when I caught a couple guys catching baby terrapins. Apparently there is a large black market in East Asia, where these guys appeared to be from. I have zero issue getting fish and game involved when people are abusing the local wildlife and fisheries. I’ve seen people keeping flounder that are too small to even cook! Mostly people who either can’t read the laws and regulations, or just don’t care because they seemingly can get away with everything in the state. I guess “tourists” is one way to put it.
