‘I cannot sleep through that’ - neighbour driven crazy by barking dog

Elaine Booker says it took a trip to Fair Go to see progress on the problem, with the owner and authorities seeming to turn a deaf ear.

My brother-in-law trained his neighbor's dogs using an airsoft gun. The gun shoots plastic bb's that do not harm the dog or break skin. They simply sting, which is unpleasant for the dog and gets his immediate attention. Just shoot it whenever it barks. It would soon learn to keep it's mouth shut. You would just need to practice first to aim accurately and not shoot anywhere near the dog's eyes. (However, if the dog has balls, those are fair game:) Use bb's that are the same color as the ground so they aren't too visible to the neighbor. If your house is very close to the dog so you may be able to shoot directly out your window. For those who need to shoot during the day, set up some kind of blind behind which you can hide, made of plywood or even cardboard. Perhaps you could put up a shed for this purpose. Drill a hole in the wall that is just large enough to shoot and look through and you're all set. I understand that people get to the end of their ropes and resort to drastic means but poisoning dogs is horrible. Please try my suggestion instead.

I lived next to a barking dog for 7 years. I moved out 9 years ago, and I recently found out I have PTSD to this day that gets triggers everytime a high pitched dog barks. I had anxiety attacks randomly and went to a psychologist, who refered me to a hearing specialist who, after 4 appointments and many tests, confirmed it was PTSD from the dog barking all those years ago. I didn't think that was a thing, but aparently it is. So if you think you may have experienced that, you're not going crazy.

A few years ago, I was disabled. I had a hearing loss period of 2 years. I could not hear, but I could still "feel" the next door neighbors two barking hounds, that would bray 15 hours a day, 6 days a week. The neighbor was depressed due to some unfortunate divorce and then bought two dogs or something, and had to work to pay for the apartment he lived in. That is the closest I've come to committing the Big S. Dogs don't deserve to have such nice lives. They don't like it. They're meant to be treated worse than dirt and given dirty jobs. That's what they were bred for. That's not abuse, it's respect. Disrespecting a dog is assuming any animal is like a person.

@@slaydog5102 You ever hear of the Karelian Bear Dog? They were bred to hunt large game, including bears, and can chase them off someone's property. They also go after moose and wild boar; at least two of these types of animal is a consistent problem in the northern wilderness. As someone who lives in a rural, agricultural part of the USA, I can appreciate why a cattle rancher might need a dog, especially considering the wolf-nutters started introducing grey wolves to the area, oh... 13 years ago? And they're chipped and protected by law, so ranchers aren't allowed to shoot them when they attack their cattle. The dog nutter culture extends well beyond domestic dogs. A great place to start is to ban dogs in city limits altogether, but it becomes significantly more nuanced in the more untamed parts of the country.

Now that I have experienced first hand how annoying and bothersome continous excessive barking can cause someone - I feel terrible for this lady. I have anxiety already and my neighbours dog who barks excessively in the evening just triggers my anxiety even more to a point I want to run away from my own home. The neighbours have a young border collie who lives in the backyard with minimal play and companionship *GARRRGGGH*. I live in Australia and there is a law that you can't have roosters in surburban areas as they crow early mornings and causes noise nuisance to surrounding neighbours. So if roosters can be an issue for noise why can't dog barking be also, especially since everyone owns a dog these days? Excessive barking can cause health problems for neighbours and sleep issues. This is NOT acceptable. I love dogs and have one myself but I would never let my dog bark like that where it disrupts someone else's enjoyment of their own home. This is plain animal neglect from the irresponsible owner. The owner will need to take action to remedy this problem or be fined heavily and the dog gets taken away and rehomed. The owner should also have a ban from ever owning a dog again as they have a history of irresponisble dog ownership. I strongly believe that you need a license to own a dog. Now we have everyone owning a dog yet have zero knowledge and or commitment on how to raise and train a dog properly so that it is not a nusiance to their neighbours. Why have a dog if you are not committed to giving it love and companionship and providing it the daily exercise it needs? It's not fair for the dog and your neighbours. Please rehome your dog if you can't afford to provide it with these basic neccessity. It's not easy to raise and train a dog from puppy to adulthood - educate yourself before getting one - it's called being responsible. RANT OVER!

It is because dog barking has become socially acceptable (or maybe not acceptable, but not deemed an urgent violation like playing loud music). Whatever is socially acceptable is infrequently challenged. So few people have the intuition to think beyond what is currently acceptable or normal in their culture. That is what humans are supposed to be, endowed with higher level brains, so few use them. Because dogs have spent 10,000 years or so with us, it is quite obnoxious that they still apparently do not understand the difference between danger and routine. They still have to be trained to the outer edges before they resemble anything other than a pest. How does that make them intelligent? What is the point? It is just done because it is just done, there is no thinking involved. Local government is absolutely impotent, over there in the southern hemisphere and up here in the northern hemisphere. It is because of western culture. Western culture should be put under a microscope and learn from other cultures that do not idolize this vastly overrated pet.

There were never this many barking dogs in this area. My little town has grown drastically the past few years & there are a lot of outsiders moving here. I was brought up with manners & how to treat your neighbor & obviously these people were not brought up this way. The ones next door are so bad. I can't walk out of my house without it barking non stop & my door is no where in that dogs sights. I have talked to the owners & ended up getting in an argument. They said, dogs bark, basically deal with it. Dogs are only supposed to bark for a good reason & of course when they need your attention, are excited, little things like that, but not constantly. What I'm curious about is, how do the neighbors put up with it? The dog is right there barking in their yard. I feel you, I live through the same thing. Unfortunately lawmakers couldn't care less about this kind of disturbance, or better, mental torture, so we can't do anything about it other than move, or spend money in lawsuits that don't solve anything.

I used to live in an apartment and shared it with my uncle, we used to have a very annoying, nonstop barking dog that lived next door to us that would never shut up when the neighbor went to work, barked for hours on end, we finally went to the office with noise complaints enough times as well as animal control to where they would NOT let them re-sign another lease.

I have all love for dogs but my neighbour also has a dog which barks very early in the morning and I'm sleep deprived. We all sleep late at home too. It's such a devastating condition. Not only morning its always barks and we can't even talk with each other or watch something due to the noise. And even when writing this the dog is barking.

Now I love dogs, they are cute and adorable but this problem is not defendable, it’s annoying and irritating and I feel bad for people who haft to put up with it, I’ve had to deal with stuff like that too but let’s make something straight here, the dog itself isn’t 100% the problem, it’s annoying but I think the biggest problem is rude dog owners that don’t do anything or the council not even caring, that’s the biggest problem, if the council just listened and actually cared and the dog owner actually tried to stop his dog from barking this much, then the problem would’ve been solved instantly. I feel so bad for this poor woman

I knew a woman who was a veterinary assistant. She said that their most common cases with dogs were poisonings. She said they assumed that people got fed up with barking, put some rat poison in ground meat and threw it over the fence. Mean, but probably effective.

I'm currently going through this. I work in retail they put you 8 days straight shifts no rest. I can never rest on my off days. I've spoken to the neighbors before but they don't do anything about it. My dad says I'm stupid for going on about their dogs but it's getting to a point where I can't take it anymore

I saw a case on youtube whefe the owner wss desperate to get her German sheppard to stop barking. She went on holiday and left her dog with a trainer. In a short time he got the dog to stop barking and going for walks and playing with other dogs. The owner has to get her dog trained.

Dog barkings is a real big, big, big, big serious problem. But either dog's owners (along with this brainwashed society) play it down or they just unashamedly deny it. Debarking your dog should be mandatory unless you live miles from your nearest neighbour ! It's a matter of public health I had been sleep deprived and stressed because of barking for an whole year ! I'had been relatively lucky cause the guy finally moved out. But now I live in a constant fear cause I know it could happen again and this time I might be less "lucky". You've got to experience it for yourself to know how horrible it is ! It's a constant nightmare, you lose your health, your motivation and your taste for life ! Now whenever I hear barkings my heart start to beat faster and can't even stand dogs on tv. I'll never be the same anymore.
