Reminder, if you have Pro Tools "First" this will look a little different as there is not a proper "Playback Engine" window (to my knowledge). Additionally if you are on a PC there are other factors like a ASIO driver that will need to be installed.

@Aysha Luzia Penha I'm not as familiar with Pro Tool first, but it looks like there is still a Playback Engine menu. A scarlet should be "plug and play" so presumably just plugging it in and selecting it in the Playback Engine would be the first step. After that check back in with the video to troubleshoot. @@ChrisMoroccoSound Hey: I'm just starting out and was wondering what the advantages were for getting a pro tools subscription over the free version? I've got a Behringer UMC 22, an MPK mini 3, a Yeti mic and some Sony headphones(as well as electro-acoustic and electric guitars) so you can see I've at least got a(very cheap) setup. I'm interested in making music that is experimental and probably a bit different, although not necessarily very complex, but I do love as much sonic variety as possible. I like hearing instruments and effects that sound dramatically different. Right now I can't even get pro tools to be audible, but once I do what am I going to be missing without the full version of Pro tools? As a songwriter who likes variety, but who isn't ever going to be particularly competent at the more complex side of production, is it worth getting full fat pro tools?

Thanks Chris, this saved me a lot of troubleshooting time! I went from the studio to my home studio and couldn't figure out why I couldn't hear anything. Fixing the I/O settings did the trick.

I have a question, I am having a problem hearing sound. I have my interface linked up to my protools and have krk monitors plugged in and I can hear everthing fine when I watch videos or listen to beats ive made in MPC beats. But I am trying to record some guitar in pro tools and I cant get anything to come out. I can play the guitar and I see it show up on the levels but after I try to record something I dont hear it. I cant even hear the click track but I see them all on the levels like they are playing. Do you know what I can do to fix this? Thanks!

Is this only happening when you are in the middle of recording? Meaning, when you hit record you see waveforms but cannot hear? If so you can turn on "input monitor" which is the "I" next to record and it will turn green. This will allow you to hear what you are recording, while you are recording. You can also try to have a "record" only track, then after the recording drag the clip into a "non-record-enabled-track" for playback. Are you on a PC? Sometimes the ASIO driver monopolizes the sound output of your machine and cannot output from multiple sources. Lastly, does anything output properly in Pro Tools at all? Can you bring in another sound and get it to work? Double check your playback engine and let me know, happy to keep trouble shooting.

You mean the volume bar on your computer? That sounds normal for it to be greyed out as the audio interface (in your case the Apollo) should now take over control of master volume. Playback engine sounds good, what about the output of your track and I/O settings, is that setup properly to get to your Apollo? Sounds like you are getting sound meters to hit the Apollo. Just a Hail Mary here, do you have a mute button on the Apollo or is the volume turned down? Lastly, where does the sound go after the Apollo? Speakers? Headphones?

Are you trying to used the pedalboard as an audio interface? Or do you have another interface that you are plugging the pedalboard into, like a Focusrite for example? What version of Pro Tools do you have, Pro Tools First by chance?

Nice video, question... I have 12 tracks and they are all playing good except for 2 of them. For some odd reason out of tha blue, tha bass line sounds like a ( zapping ) sound if that makes sense. It's only those 2 tracks, any idea why ? Thanks

I really need help with something... I am having issues getting a signal to come directly from any track to my main 1-2 output. I have reset all settings multiple times, but I can only get audio after routing it through an AUX track, then to the 1-2 Output. If i go directly from one audio track to the 1-2 Output the master fader shows no signal whatsoever.

If I am using an audio interface does my input and output have to come from the audio interface itself? at the moment I am using an xlr microphone plugged into my behringer audio interface. I have installed behringers drivers and plugged everything in correctly. I am able to see my sound is working (playback engine: behringer USB) but I want to hear the beat while I record over top of it, and that is where I am stuck. I have tried every output option and even tried the asio4all solution. My only guess is I have to buy a pair of xlr headphones and plug them into the open port marked with a headphone symbol on the audio interface. Is there anyway I can spare this expense and just use my 300$ gaming headset plugged into my computer, I would greatly appreciate any help.

Hey, just want to clarify, are you trying to hear what you are recording while recording? Have you tried hitting the "I" on the track (turns green). This is input monitoring and should allow you to hear yourself while recording. You may have some latency issues at this point, which is a different topic, but lmk if input monitoring helps.

@@ChrisMoroccoSound negative, I am not trying to hear my own voice just the beat while im recording. (Like when I press record and it starts playing the beat is playing in my headphones.) I have tried the "I" and it shows that my microphone is working properly and if I change my playback engine from "behringer" to "asio4all" I am able to hear what I recorded and the beat but it only plays through the computer speakers and when I try to play it through my headphones it is mute. (the headphones do work) It has been a struggle making the playback engine "behringer" to record acapella. then changing back to "asio4all" to line up my audio recording with the beat recording. I am sure I am just missing a very simple step but I have tried for hours and days. I wont be giving up though. If you have any other suggestions you could bless your boy with I'd be very appreciative.

Yea, I've heard of a bunch of Apollo issues where people are doing everything correctly but it still does not work. Make sure ALL your software and firmware is up to date, especially for the Apollo.

Hmm I'd have to see more of what is going on but maybe just a bug since restarting it fixes the problem? Do you see levels on the meters and cannot hear? OR does everything just drop out completely and nothing on meters?

PLEASE HELP I have two options on my PC when it comes to playback engine. Realtek Digital Output and Speakers. Only speakers produce sound out of any application, yet PRO TOOLS playback engine defaults to Realtek Digital Output and no matter how many times i try and change it to my speakers IT WONT CHANGE! How do i fix this its so stupid i change the playback engine to speakers, click ok, pro tools restart and when it boots back up the playback engine is still Realtek Digital Output?!

Unfortunately I think that might be beyond my pay grade, I think the Realtek Digital Output is a sound card? That might be causing the problem. If you have the ability to get an audio interface that might be easier. Apologies, this sounds like a hardware/sound card issue.

What if I checked all of this and still no sound? 😢

Hey Chris, Im currently using a scarlet solo on my pro tools - krks - and a baby blue bottle - everything has been fine the past week since acquiring everything. My friend came over gave me a template and it enhanced my experience; and now as I’m getting good at everything, I can’t hear ANY vocals from any of my previous recordings or the new one I was doing when the error occurred. I tried all three methods and none of those have worked for me. I’ve restarted my MacBook and everything - nothing works. Please help at your earliest convenience! Thanks in advance

On the very most right side of where the track information is (near where the track name itself is), there is a vertical grey strip that looks sort of like a ruler. If you click there you will see a menu that allows you to change the track size, small, medium, large, jumbo etc. try that!

I use a Focusrite for my input and my monitors just use an aux cable from my computer's out. Whenever I change the playback engine to Built-in output, I get sound just fine, but trying to re arm the track it gives me a message saying that it doesn't have both an input and output assigned. When I go to relink my Focusrite, it isn't available as an option.

Ok well I think I see the issue. Right now you are trying to input from your Focusrite and output via your computer (that aux cable), which you cannot do. Simply get some speaker cables and go OUT of your Focusrite and IN to your monitor speakers. This will cause your Focusrite to be both your Input (microphone plugged in for example) and Output (monitor speakers) and from there you will just need to make sure your I/O settings and track settings are proper, like in the video. Make sense?

I’m having this problem but I am not getting a signal for my playback as well as the fact I can’t hear it. However, I can record and hear myself in the mic just fine. Only once I try to play it back I get no signal or sound. Any help?

Are you trying to playback in the same track you are recording in? If so, maybe try moving it to a new track.

Hi. I'm having a problem with output too I guess. First time using pro tools. When I load the plug ins for my vocals I can record and hear them thru my headphones. But when I playback the recorded audio, the plug in effects aren't there anymore. Someone please help! Thanks!

Hey, you probably don’t want to playback in a record track unless you have the ability to input monitor, but even still it might be a good idea to record in one track, then move everything to another track for playback. Lmk

What do you mean "sound to come out from plugins" are you adding a plug in on a track and effecting an audio clip? Or do you mean some kind of plug in that is creating sound itself?

Under Setup > I/O do you have a mono (1 channel) output instead of stereo (2 channel)? Is this a brand new interface? Might be a hardware problem.

Dude! I really need your help, I can’t hear my audio no matter what I do. The beat plays fine but I can’t hear audio I recorded. Or my mic now for that matter, literally didn’t do anything between my last session & this one. It isn’t I/O, nothing is solo & nothing is muted. The track with my vocal & mic has the same audio output as my beat & I hear the beat fine. Protools actually isn’t even recognizing any other track other than the beat. Like there’s no sound being registered into the DAW. I have no clue what’s going on & it’s killing my inspiration / creativity. This is bs. Please help if you can.

i dont have monitor speakers and all i have is a Headphone but when i tried to listen through it, protools session playback is not happening but at the same time it does happen if i play youtube.....cant figure out any session routing issue though (By the way i use protools crack version and i set ASIO4ALL V2 as playback engine.. my audio interface is minifuse)

Hmm, not sure if the cracked version has anything to do with it but if you set your Playback Engine, and check the outputs of your tracks etc. you should be good. What happens if you change playback engine to the minifuse?

Hi ! I got a session from other guy and my first trouble was that no matter where i would download the session (i made a folder only for it and the audiofiles) the program would not find the archives, so i had to manually look for them. Once that was done, i found that even after putting the stereo output 1 - 2 for every channel the sound would not reproduce. The volume bar shows colour like there is audio reproducing but i hear nothing. Dont know what to do, i tried the 3 solutions presented in the video and it is still not working ...

How are you physically listening to sound? Through the computer output? An audio interface? Did you select that in Playback Engine? Otherwise maybe I can look at some screenshots and maybe I can spot something.
