If you cut potatoes and plant them right away they may rot. Common practice is to let them air dry for a day or so which forms a tough layer over the cut surface. This might not work in a really humid climate. Cement and salt seems like a good way to handle it.

Nice catch, didn't notice until I read your comment.
Sorry to burst some people's bubble, but it's all staged. The potatoes are not only not attached to the roots when dug out. But they are all the same size also. That never happens on a real potato plant when havested. You will always have some large, some medium, and some small potatoes in the mix. That is a fact I know for certain because I have grown potatoes many times.

The video is a hoax. Never would all potatoes have the exact same size. They are bigger and smaller and they all are still connected with roots to the green. The green is very small. It has to be really big, it has some blossoms and when the potatoes are grown the green looks kind of weakened.. You may try this but don't expect anything.

Well done - works really well! I like to run my earth through a sieve as I pick out my potatoes. It mixes the earth up again, and it makes it easy to see the potatoes, plus I can sieve into buckets or a wheelbarrow, reducing double and treble handling. Enjoy your crop!
