@Dave M - In countries where the technology is not much advanced and the people are poor they use wooden moulds to make the bricks to build their houses. They use cement and sand in the ratio of 1:4 for making solid bricks without holes in the centre. In Srilanka we made roughly 64 bricks by using a 50kg bag of cement in the 1990 when the cost of a cement bag was approximately one US$ . The size of the bricks were 12 x 6 x 5 inches. Though we could have bought ready made bricks, we didn’t like the quality of strength and finish ! Nowadays the price of a bag of cement weighing 50kg is about 80 US$ and the sand is very high.
