    To anyone claiming his build is "not efficient": Yes, a laptop will ultimately pull less power. But when talking about computers in this range, the components themselves will not be THAT much of a difference between laptop and desktop. The energy savings from going with a laptop is primarily from when adding the computer's consumption along with the consumption of the monitor. If he was willing to get rid of his big screen, then, and only then, will be notice the consumption difference. Since he was already using a separate monitor, there was not going to be much power usage difference between his new rig and a similarly specced laptop. And even if he finds consumption to be too high, a simple tone-down of graphics settings will get him where he needs to be. But if he has superb sunlight for an extended time, he now has the capability to crank graphics settings to the max, should he want to. The only real-world benefit of going with a laptop in his specific use case scenario is an even smaller footprint. But to get that footprint means he accepts not being able to change parts on the PC. It's not like he has a small van, so the small factor desktop suits him perfectly, with literally zero downsides, other than the monetary cost of the rig, which was likely funded in part, if not wholly, by the company he worked with. Anyway... ==================== L.M.F.A.O. You totally got me with that ending. ==================== A HUGE thank you for posting your specs. I am about a week away from hitting the road myself. I am also an MMO player and am looking at creating a power efficient build too. I just might copy your exact setup. Please PLEASE do another video as a "review" comparing your old rig to your new one, power consumption numbers included. And please compare frame rates with respect to power consumption. I.E., "this game gets me XX frames and uses XX watts to do it, and using my other rig on the exact same game gets me XX frames and uses XX watts to do it".

    Turning down graphics settings doesn't automatically mean power consumption goes down, you would also have to limit the framerate because if you don't you might end up with more power consumption due to the CPU being pushed harder having a higher framerate. Also, when you talk about a "similarly specced" laptop I hope you aren't comparing a laptop 3070 to a desktop 3070 because there's a huge difference in power consumption there, so I'll assume you're talking about a higher end laptop GPU that performs closer to a desktop 3070 but I'm not exactly sure on the power consumption numbers there (I don't research laptops too much, but I know laptop components with the same name as desktop components do not perform the same and consume much less power)

  • @krenicus

    @krenicus

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, a lot of people don't realize that your hardware isn't pulling out full power all the time and will efficiently control its own clocks and power consumption. He can also control the power consumption of the graphics card even more by using MSI Afterburner and capping the power limit to something like 60%. An RTX 3070 should still be able to pump out plenty of performance at that power level. I cap my 3060ti to 70% a lot of the time and notice practically no difference while power consumption remains low.

    Technically most laptops ARE more power efficient. Usually 50% less wattage used for 30% less performance. Generally.

  • @sammyfuckinmurray

    @sammyfuckinmurray

    This PC will be more powerful and efficient then any laptop, personally a big fan of the case too. He might save 10% power going with a laptop but he will probably lose %50 of his overall efficiency. Plus if he is in a location with shore power or move out of the van for some reason he can always dial his PC settings back up. I use both for work and gaming, both make sense for different reasons. In this case, that PC setup is definitely the right move.

    I just swapped a 5600x to a 5600g, the 5600x pulled around 50-60w while gaming, the 5600g is usually around 10-20w. 5700g is also a good choice. I also swapped x570 for a b550 motherboard (x570 is noticeable more power hungry as the chipset needs beefy or even active cooling), my tuned 6800xt is pulling 110w gaming, and then with a titanium power supply my total power stays under 200w and is more around 150w average gaming. A note about ryzen CPU's the regular desktop ones use chiplets and a separate I/O die, while the 5600g/5700g uses a "monolithic" chip that heavily reduces idle power and load power.

    Great Video! I'd highly recommend switching around the positions of the components through. Check out Gamers Nexus' video on how AIO placement affects the longevity of the AIO Pump. In this specific case (NR200) and Config (5950x and 3070) the 240mm rad is adequate for the cpu but it might run a little warm, a 280mm would be better for not much more in terms of price and power draw. The vertical mount for the GPU is nice and all but that space could have been used for a larger radiator, WITH PROPER positioning I might add. The gpu could have just been mounted regularly and and 2 slim fans where the AIO is currently at for maybe another $20 - $30. Nonetheless, good stuff! Just needs a little tweaking for longevity of the AIO and maybe squeezing out an extra 100 MHz out of that CPU since Ryzen really loves low temps and boosts higher the better it's cooled.

    I would use liquid cooling with a control valve to switch the heat exhaust inside during the winter and outside during the summer. Recycle your heat exhaust when you can.

    Okay, love this! Thanks for putting this together. During the Outro you show clips of yourself playing Halo Infinite. Im going to assume you're playing Multiplayer online, as thats all that is available atm. When you're in a Match playing what sort of PING do you get while being off gird? Im sure its fine when at a friends, or on solid wifi, but can you actually game a Multiplayer FPS while being completely off grid?

    Awesome vid, loved the scenes with the music and walking through the store! Overall great build, I was confused at first that he chose a 5950x (the flagship consumer AMD CPU right now) but it does make sense as those are great binned CPU's (a good bin means less power required to achieve the same performance as say an OK bin) and gaming isn't going to be pushing it to the max. It's still probably an overkill CPU but hey I assume it was paid for by Microcenter so might as well haha. The 3070 is definitely what I would've chose at the most, a 3070 Ti or 3080 would push the power consumption significantly higher. I'm sure he went over some things you can do to reduce the power consumption but here's some tips anyway: - Setting a framerate limit, most games these days have an unlocked framerate (within reason at least, well over 100 FPS typically) so limiting it yourself can in some cases significantly reduce power consumption. My recommendation would be limiting your games to the refresh rate of your monitor, so for example if your monitor is 144Hz then limit your games to 144 FPS so you aren't consuming more power than really needed (having a higher framerate than your refresh rate does technically have some benefit but it's hardly noticeable and not something to worry about unless you're an e-sports pro lol). Alternatively if you want to have an extra long gaming session you could limit to 60 FPS, still very playable but could extend playtime quite a while depending on the game and graphics settings - Limiting the graphics settings, these days the difference between ultra settings and high settings is barely noticeable so it makes much more sense to play with slightly reduced settings rather than completely max out but when it comes to power consumption you have to keep that first tip in mind because reducing settings will increase your framerate and your power consumption could instead go up due to the CPU now working harder (higher framerates put more stress on the CPU), but if the framerate is limited and you reduce the graphics settings then power consumption can go down even further due to the GPU not pushing as hard for those higher settings And some things to try if you decide you're up for some learning and research: - Reducing voltage on the GPU and CPU, typically you can reduce voltage a little bit without issue and achieve a lower power consumption and lower temperatures in the process (all without losing performance, can actually slightly improve performance in some cases due to being allowed to boost higher because of the lower temps and/or that lower power consumption) - Underclocking, going further than reducing the voltage you can reduce the clocks as well as the voltage even further to get even lower power consumption but you do lose some performance here

    for the internet connectivity you will be needing LTE router for off the grid and for wifi, we can have a good antenna that can be mounted outside of the vehicle to catch wifi from outside the van. Think wardriving.

    I literally just built the same pc for my brother basically by accident LOL. He travels a lot and I guess we had the same ideas for a compact yet practical PC. I got him the same case, same motherboard, same powersupply, same storage, and also used a aio liquid cooler. The only difference was we had a 5800x and a 3060ti. Great build!
