I Built an Uphill Halfpipe Where You Swing from the Bottom to the Top!

Hey everyone and welcome back to more Zeepkist! Today we are building uphill tracks so I decided to make a halfpipe where we start from the bottom and make our way to the top by swinging back and forth!
Check out ‪@darealkosmo‬ for his amazing track!

    The most high octane 12 minutes of gravity racing I've experienced hands down :D That said, there was quite a bit to optimize here, not sure what was the fastest way, but turning > reversing for me :D Also want to add some small tidbit about hands up: the force is always away from the road surface, so on a rising slope it is actually up and a bit backwards. While in air, the force is always upwards

    Yes, you're right. And also I think the best thing would be to turn as low as possible in the hills. Sure you lose speed turning but you make it back at the bottom (boosters) faster than if you went all the way up and down again. I'd suggest taking the turns as wide and fast as you can until you pick up enough speed to make it up in one go (memorize the speed required). You should only go up the hill further if you have too much speed to make the turn

    The only net energy added is via the boosters. With Zeepkist, energy is lost when turning via friction (or later on landings off the bump). So getting through the boosters more times more quickly will add more energy, by turning as soon as you cleanly can should add speed the fastest. Potentially, using the brakes while airborn to stop the rotation would reduce the loss on landing off the bump.

    I think a good 3-4 second time save can be had by taking the final hill at an angle to reduce air time and mitigate the sudden loss of 20-30 speed on landing impact. having that speed drop gradually will maintain more speed as you crest the hill.

  • @Pystro

    I think there's 4 secrets to a good time: A: J_ordinary commented that going between two boosters accelerates you faster. The data in the reply below doesn't confirm this. B: Know which speed you have to come out of the boosters at for your final climb. (175km/h doesn't work, 180 km/h was the speed kAN had at the end when he might even have been better off going around another time). C: Starting your turn around when you hit 75km/h only looses you 5 km/h (for example, kAN came out of the boosters at 120 km/h, and after reversing he entered the next one with 119km/h). Turning too aggressively can lead to you needing a whole extra pass to reach the 150km/h mark (see the runs with 140km/h and 150km/h passes). D: Hands up may speed you up. Or slow you down. Either way you'd have to know when to use it and when to not use it. [edits after doing the analysis below]: Turning around costs you more than 1 km/h. Reversed the conclusion that followed from that.

    It's legit. I combined A & C to great effect when I tried the map and got something around 1;20 at my first success and compared to my control run without double boost at 1;38.. Yeah no contest, though admittedly the control run probably had an extra cycle.(But that's why knowing the required speed is important) But then I plugged in my controller and besides the double boost being easier I got smoother turn arounds and finally managed to shave yet another cycle of for a time of 1;06;789. Edit: I noticed during my runs that I could get really close on yet another less cycle, like 177km/h when you ideally want 182km/h or something. So I tried maximizing my speed for that uphill instead of the next. It wasn't easy but by turning at 55km/h instead of 75km/h for the first couple of turns, and maybe my hands up helped, I got it done. For a time of 1;03;970.. Yeah the rest of the run takes so much longer that almost all of the time you save by doing 1 less cycle is lost gaining speed.

    I saw something interesting. When you get down to 80 you need to turn no matter were you are. If you are below 80 you will get max speed on the way back down before hitting the accelerator. If you turn with 80 you constantly speeding up. That should also make a difference. So not looking were you are, just turn if it goes to 80. Ok, I can't proof it, but that looks to be a viable way. And someone wrote to go always between both accelerators to get boosted by both.

  • @102728
    @1027282 жыл бұрын

    Going up and then down should keep your speed neutral if not slightly losing due to friction so it doesn't add speed. What does add speed is boosters. So hitting them as often as possible with as little time in between would generate speed the quickest. This means turning as soon as your speed drops enough to allow it and riding the outside to allow wider turns at higher speeds. Figure out the maximum speed that allows a safe turn and you set a good time Back and forth without turning is the slowest possible way without failing on purpose.

    I think the optimal way to do this map is the following (I don't have the game tho so this could be completely wrong): you need to go between the 2 boosters to get the effect of both, start turning around as soon as you're turning radius is small enough to not crash into the wall, then, at the end, know how much speed you need to reach the finish line (through trial and error).

  • @venoltar
    @venoltar Жыл бұрын

    Going between both boosters(maybe if they stack) and turning as quickly as possible(When you can avoid skidding) should be the key. Just hit the boosters as often as possible in the shortest amount of time. The slope is worse than a 0 sum, no benefit to extending time on them until you are going all the way to the top.

    I'm thinking the same is true for this track as any race track: you need to hit the racing line, the shortest route through the track. Turn back down hill as soon as you can without braking. What gravity took, it will give back. But what friction took, is lost, and the longer you spend going up, the more friction can take.

  • @FUGP72

    @FUGP72

    2 жыл бұрын

    But while you aren't losing energy to friction, you are lengthening the course by turning. I suspect Kosmo was onto something with his idea to reverse at the start but then turn. When you aren't going that fast, you slow down to 0 and start reversing quicker but after a couple of times, you will be going too fast and will take way too long to do come to a stop. Warcans was definitely still reversing later in the run, after he got his 1:22. We could see him at one point. I bet that was his method. 2 or 3 times reversing, and then changing it up to turning.

  • @MogR91

    Energy game I liked it :D seems to me like a race to get the kinetic energy as fast as possible so just turn as soon as you can? And use the double boosters technique too. Only use hands up on your last climb as is makes you “lighter” so you go up more but your goal is to get back to the boosters as quick as possible before you reach 180kph+.

    man, this is another one where it's so dam simple but so dam refineable, which is kinda the whole point of the gravity racing game to begin with: almost everything cascades exponentially as long as that speed limit softcap doesn't come into play. probably one of the big points in favor of trackmania too: it's nearly impossible to hit speedcap without a track explicitly designed to enable it so unless you're implementing bugs simply accelerating more and turning/braking less is all you can do to go faster and balancing that against driving less distance is your end time, heck, even most of the speedbug usage works in a similar do-it-smoother-to-do-it-better manner.

    Should the game physics work like reality, when you come to the boosters you should have at most the speed you left the previous boosters. So you need to run through enough to get to the speed required to get to the top. So I would assume turning back around as soon as you are going slow enough to do so would minimize the time required to build the speed.

    This track made me wonder why go so far up the hill? ie you dont have to go up the hill as far as you can each run...you just need to circle through the boosters repeatedly to get to speed X which is fast enough to finally make it up and over....and so faster times should be quicker by cycling and looping back and forth as low on the hills as you can, before getting enough to finally go up and over.

    Going in reverse doesn't work. You lose to much time waiting to slow down to a stop, then speed up again. Watching the video it doesn't matter if you go in reverse, or turn around, you end up at pretty much the same speed you had when you started going up. By turning around, you're not spending time waiting to slow down to a stop, allowing you to get back to the booster quicker. Watching the video it didn't matter if Kan went reverse or turned around, he was always going roughly the same speed when he got to the bottom as when he started going up. The only difference is that by turning you may lose 1 or 2 speed, but you save time by not waiting to come to a stop.

    you want to gain speed fast... how do you do that you do really short swings at the start basicly don't go up the hill just turn and when you get to much speed for that you go up a little and then wait to you have low enough speed to turn and then when you get the first bump you go high up on each lap.

    I don't play this game, so I might be completely off the mark, but I don't see why you would go all the way up the hill every swing. Shouldn't you turn as soon as possible to get as little time between boosters as possible? I guess if the turning costs more energy at higher speeds, you'd want to wait until you go slow, but in that case the reversing method should be even faster.

    Can't you brake? Just get as far as you can, then when you drop under... maybe 20 speed, brake.

    I dont think there is any benefit to trying to get higher. You lose a ton of speed. ou want to turn immediately once you can make the turn without skidding or losing speed

    I've only ever watched these guys play, but it hurts to watch...they are obviously missing some key strategies to finishing this quicker...probably could've put down a 1:20 or 1:22 if done completely correctly

    I love these videos, but I feel like them complaining about other people being too good and blaming cheeses/game physics etc. over the past few videos instead of realizing that some people are just better at them at the game really brings the energy down for me :|
