I built a DXCommander Rapide Vertical for HF Radio Comms. Morse Code, Ham Radio, Wiltshire Man

DXCommander currently produce vertical antenna's for amateur radio.
The antenna's work as a nest of quarter waves and use a fibreglass pole to support the full quarter wave elements.
They are very competitivly priced making them affordable for every one and also great for / Portable or if you have restricted space.
Just be aware that a vertical can be prone to picking up more electrical noise in an urban environment so in extreme cases you may need some form of recieving antenna to hear the weaker signals, as a transmitting antenna it would appear they work very well.

My first occupational specialty in the Marines was Field Radio Operator. They made a huge mistake teaching 18 year olds Morse Code hahaha. The Corporal had to chase us off the knee keys once we figured out how to find other operators. We didn't use it much for operations, but we did use it for chatting between other communicators. Command staff just thought it was background noise and were unaware of the nonsense we were transmitting or how we were making deals for supplies for our platoon. I need to get back into this.

Sad state of affairs right now..... I'm in awe of your morse/radio skills. I use the airwave/radio system everyday in work as you know but the radio dicerpline is not as strict as the army. I had mixed results with my antenna, worked some good DX with it and put down loads of radials too,. I worked a VK station on the DXcommander who was quite weak and gave me a poor signal report but it was DX. I then switched to my home made elevated radial vertical (elevated only by 5ft at the feed point) and instantly both reports went up by 3 s units! The elevated vertical also only had 3 tuned elevated radial counterpoises! Also I found the DX commander kept collapsing and I had to glue the joints with CA glue to keep it up, the supplied clamps simply are not strong enough. The concept of the antenna is basic and works but for me the elevated vertical is the better all rounder but also more faff when multibanding

Good results all round Sandy. Callum makes some cracking kit and really knows, his stuff when it comes to antennas...love his videos. That reminds me, bought a 10m mast off him last year and have got to pop that up after bringing in the very heavy 12m spiderbeam. Will attach a 5/8th wave Hawkins antenna to the DX Commander. Looking forward to the camping video. You got plans for paramotoring this year?

For the price I think you'll find it hard to beat Michael, I took my time and spent a nice evening in the shack cutting the driven elements and soldering them, then another evening making up all the radials. As for putting it all together and tuning that took another 4 hours of gentle work in the garden on a sunny day. Very pleased with the result.

look forward to hearing you on the bands Sandy. they are so simple aren't they but, that means there is less to go wrong. Friend of mine bought a well known vertical and has virtually had to rebuild it to get it to work like it does now. I keep looking at the DXC's but there's no where I could get 16'ft diameter in the clear so I'm not sure how it would work . My existing vertical is great for broadcast band listening and out performs my loop on some bands but I don't think my QTH is as quiet as yours looking at your S meter. Hope you and Mandy are all OK and the pooches are behaving. 73's Nick

Hi Nick Just remember this is a hobby, if you don't have the room just put the radials down in whatever direction you are able to, you will still get out. Here the bands can become noiusy but I have noticed in the mornings the bands are much quieter than the afternoons, I guess more people are turning on electrical appliances later in the day. 30 meters is the noisiest band for me

Don't waste your money on it, yes the waterproofness is not so great, the ground sheet is made from that cheap woven material and the poles in mine broke very easily, so just don't buy it, waste of money. But having said that the design is good. Its just the materials that let it down
