Yeah, I use Linux so none of the proprietary software's have ever been an option. I only used openrgb cause i had hardware with rgb i couldnt turn off. With my new build I went with no rgb lol and a keyboard with built in rgb controls... which all should have. Openrgb though is pretty decent for having all in one saves a lot of time and resources since windows uses 12gb of ram at idle every little bit counts.

Great solution to the RGB software pollution indeed. What the video didn't go over was how much extra CPU resources the software will use when you add this Chroma functionality in comparison to just have it control a keyboard and a mouse, for instance. THIS is what's important for the real geeks.

You should keep it at 6 not override to 12 - the count is there to get effects correct for waves etc, not anything to do with power. You have 6 addresses out of your maximum of 8.

This right here. Theres people including myself running 3- Lian Li SL-Infinity fans on a channel which are 40 LED fans for a total of 120 LEDs per channel but the lights are paralleled so there is actually only 20 addressable LEDs per fan and they will be recognized as 60 LEDs on any RGB software.

Sometimes you have to override the bead count to get all the lights to work correctly. With my CM Halo fans I had to re-assign the number from 16 to 24 so I could split the hub lights from the rings. This allows more customizability with your devices. I had to set the fans as a strip. The 16 ring lights are at the beginning 8, and ending 8 of the strip. For me, having exact counts is absolutely necessary because I go full bore with customization. My three Halo fans have a bounce/fill effect, and the hubs are the same, but reversed. Now if you have multiple devices connected to one port via a hub then you're absolutely correct. It's because Synapse 3 only sees the ports, not the devices. Three fans will only appear, and function as one, and the effect will be applied to those devices separately.

Parallel wired LEDs are counted as 1 and multiple parallel strips need to be counted by the longest strip. The way ARGB works is that each LED will read its bits and then forwards the remainder to the next. Counting is necessary to make sure the final LED gets its bits. With a pair of strips, one 10 long and one 20 long, needs 20 count. The first 10 paired will operate identically. The remaining 10 will operate fine on the long strip while nothing on the short strips gets updated.

Jay, a Molex connector can deliver up to about 130 watts on the 12v line depending on the quality of the wiring backing it up; SATA can't do that. A SATA 15-pin connector is designed to deliver a maximum of 1.5 amps of current at 3.3 volts and 5 volts and 2.0 amps at 12 volts.

Being able to get different effects, depending on the position of the components in the virtual layout is actually pretty awesome, because effects will stretch over the whole plane. This way, especially rain or the effects that run from side to side, are represented 1:1 in the real world, and you will see the colors changing in the order there are laid out physically.

We desperately need newer standards in this segment, preferably both for the interface and software. OpenRGB does help, but they can also only do so much with reverse engineering. In the meantime I have a rPI Pico with Corsair Link emulation and some soldered ARGB connectors, but the box looks nice as well, as long as it works with OpenRGB (because the Pico emulating a Corsair Lighting node pro, it can only run 2 headers, not 6). Also you should probably set the LEDs to the number of controllable LED groups. So the 12x strip should be 6, not 12, because it can only control 6 groups. It needs the count not for power or anything physical, but to be able to correctly do effects. So for something like a ping on the strip if you set it to 12, but it only has 6 groups it will cycle to LED 1-6 and you will see it, and then continue with 7-12 which doesn't exist, so you can't see anything as it addresses LED groups that don't exist. So you should probably just let it figure out the count on its own.

@jayztwocents you need to break down the fans into separate fans on the software (fine to wire them in series still). You do this on that first screen you were on with the controller by selecting "add fan". Then divide the number of LEDs up between the fans. It means you can then have different effect on each fan as well. And in the studio you can also name them

Aw man, about time. This thing is awesome. I've had mine for years. As others have said, the led count is for effects, not for a total. Having a higher count then what's actually addressable isn't too bad, but having less will have the end of the strip not light up. Also, it's molex for a reason. It's a higher power spec, allowing the device to actually power a huge amount of LED's per channel.

Yo Jay this video was a real live saver for me! When I set up my system roughly 4 years ago I bought a little box with sata power that connects to the motherboard rgb header and has like 9 rgb ports on it. I'm rocking static green color and everything seemed fine (I have like 16 RGB devices in my system so I daisy chained a few of those 9 ports). About 3 months ago the RGB on my GPU block started to go nuts. It would color cycle, some LEDs would randomly turn off/on etc. I was gonna drain/refill it over new years anyway so I began researching how to swap the RGB strip in my GPU Block, as I figured that was the problem. That is until I saw your video. I tried to change it to pure white as you said, and just like that it began to act strange on all my RGB stuff. So I bought the same razer box you picked up and just like that everything is working fine again. The GPU instantly went back to normal. To relieve the stress I put what I could on the razer box and left everything else on my sata splitter box. Anyway, I just wanted to say that this video saved me the headache of taking apart my GPU block, replacing the LED strip only for it to not even fix my problem! Also probs to Razer, the box actually works just fine with SignalRGB! Thank you so much for the awesome content and hard work and good luck with your health in 2024!

Now you're in my wheelhouse, Jay. I have one of these, and it works great. If you want to name the devices you have to name them in Chroma Studio. That won't translate to the hub, but once you get to playing with your chroma profiles you won't ever touch the hub portion of the software. A known issues for this is it's limitation in Synapse 3 only allowing one hub per PC. When you plug the second one in it won't do anything. Razer HQ is trying to address it, but for now if you want 2 hubs you'll have to buy their dev kit hub. (The one that controls external LEDs for your desk.) For this device Molex is perfect because you may not have a spare SATA cable, or plug available on the SATA line. It allows you to completely bypass SATA altogether. You can also buy adapters to convert it from molex to SATA. They did this so everyone can use it. That config also allows you to know exactly where it's plugged in because it'd most likely be the only device on a molex line. Just be prepared for Synapse 3 shenanigans because it LOVES to crash while working in Studio for too long. Sometimes it won't let you rename the folder groups, or devices until you close it, and re-open it. I've had one of these since they first launched so I have a tiny bit of experience with it. At current I have 3 CM Halo fans, 4 Deep Cool fans, and an Airgoo strip connected to it. The Halo fans, and strip are on their own ports, but the 4 deep cool fans are connected to a singular hub that's connected to one of the Chroma ports.

The shortcoming of this is that all the LED strips, fans, or whatever other RGB devices split off of the hub need to have close to the same number of LEDs or the lighting can look like it's not synced. It works with all motherboards that have RGB control since it just plugs into the ARGB header on the motherboard directly for the lighting signal and any open SATA power connector from the PSU. I bought them on Amazon years ago and they are made by XSPC. They also make hubs that look identical for 12v RGB and PWM fans, so be careful and double check if buying them.

The led count in the software is for the series count, it doesn't care about parallel. It needs series to address properly. Setting your dual string of 6 to 12 just tells it its 12 led's long so in reality you have 6 extra addressed led's that dont exist.

My first thought was to just connect 12v to 5v rectifiers to the 12v controller, something like 7805 rectifiers. But that would probably have its own share of issues and possibly won't work correctly if it uses variable voltage to change the colors instead of pwm.

I bought one of these and it works absolutely excellent. I too was having the same problem. I was also so tired of having multiple RGB softwares, so when I would go and turn on my computer I would have like six different softwares trying to boot and it would slow it down. But this controller has seem to take care of all of that in my system. It works awesome. I've had no problems with razer products. And this is no different. It's a good product and it took care of the problem. My motherboard doesn't have RGB headers. So that was the whole reason I got this.

That's just like the old ROG Aura Terminal from Asus that they discontinued, it has 4 channels, up to 90 rgb leds per channel but with a max of 210 leds connected. It has a 5th channel but it is for the logo. It has SATA power and as someone mentioned, there is a limit on the power SATA connectors can deliver, but the ROG Aura Terminal also came with an external 19v brick to use it externally. I like it because at the time it was basically the only one that good, but Asus discontinued it, and now I'm surprised that there is not a lot more of those with microcontrollers that communicate with software to set them up.

I have something similar, my new PC case came with a 4 way controller/splitter. That is, it can run independently and control and power 4 RGB 3-pin/5V ports, and it can be connected to the PC reset switch so that pressing it changes the ARGB mode instead of actually restarting the PC, so no need for any kind of RGB software or even RGB control on the motherboard if I didn't have it. Otherwise it can be plugged into a motherboard 5v ARGB header and act as a 4-way powered splitter or daisy chainer type thing. The way I ended up using it was a hodge-podge of fans and light strips not really logically laid out in terms of how the splitters are used LOL, so I just leave it all in motherboard's rainbow mode rather than trying to do anything fancy with stacking effects or anything like that.

My problem with the Razer RGB controller is not only the Molex connector for power, but each physical channel makes the weakest physical connection out there. I literally had to use a ton of zip ties to secure each connection into each port because it was so poor. If they aren’t fully secure they may not power on. Otherwise operationally it works fine, the only other thing is that you do need to know how many leds there are on the device that’s connected

I have been using that for over a year and used it in 2 systems. I had it originally in my Alienware Aurora R13 and you can get a SATA to Molex adapter to use with it. That's how I ran it.
