The porsche 911 996 carrera gen1 aero kit car. Ok maybe its not a super but its an amazing proposition at the price point. What do you think?

    The Carrera Aero kit was used on the GT3, not the other way round as you think. The rear wing looks non OEM not that it matters. The space between the planes is too wide and there shouldn’t be a step on the top plane. I had a C4 in silver de badged which I absolutely adored, the wheels were similar but they were silver with a deep dish. It’s unusual to have the rear side spats (flip flop things) which mine also had. There should be a black splitter on the front, it’s a push fit you’ll find three holes under the bumper ready and waiting for it. Now the tricky bit: Your car has the dual race IMS bearing, that in itself is fairly bullet proof. The trouble is that every around 90k miles you need to just whip the engine out and get the timing chains changed. The reason why Porsche didn’t revert back to the dual race bearing after discovering the later single race bearing would fail was because over 90k+ at some point the timing chains were prone to snapping. It could be 91k or 120k miles but at some point the chains will snap. The solution was to make the single race bearing a serviceable part, change the IMS when you change the clutch, no problem, possibly 1 hour more work for the laziest mechanic. Or do what your meant to do and drive these cars daily. Never go for a garage queen, never go for low mileage, just get yourself an average 12-14k per year car and as many receipts as possible. The difference between dual race and single race bearings appears to be torque on the timing chains, the dual race bearing stretches and snaps the chains, this was retro-diagnosed after the single race bearings started to fail as dual race IMS bearing failure. The reason being that it was happening at higher mileage on the older cars so once the chain snaps or the single race bearing fails you’re really left with the same failure but a different cause. Finally, I thought supercar like you say in the title when I bought mine, a C4 Aero gives you the feel that you bought a supercar but they are most definitely just sports cars. I bought mine in 2012 a minter for £15k you’ve bought a fixer 11 years later for 3k more so the good news is that if you get things sorted you’ll be quids in. Nothing will increase the value of your car like an invoice for the replacement of those timing chains though.

    Great choice. Lovely in guards red with aero. Got a few 911’s and this is one of my favourites. Severely underrated. Build quality not the best, ruled by accountants at the time. Just need to keep on top of maintenance. Had one of these and loved it. My recommendations: 997 sports seats. Slot straight in. RSS engine mounts make really nice difference to dynamics and gear changes (for tiny bit more transmission noise, which likely matches character of this car anyway). 997.2 GT3 shifter is great match for M96 3.4. Then just get suspension set up how you like. And drive it with big smiles 😊

    Good purchase Jon. 😎 I had a mk1 GT3 in guards red so I’m a big fan of how yours looks. I also had a mk1 C2 with Aerokit and KWs etc. 90% of a GT3 for 25% of the cost. (It’s just missing that Mezger “zing”.) As you said, what can you buy for £18k that looks as good, but not only that nothing offers the experience. Steering feel, feedback, engine noise when you rev it out, the grip out of bends, etc etc. I can’t believe they’re still so cheap. I look forward to the updates. 👍🏻

    Some great cars there. I had a mildly modified Porsche 996.1 GT3 for over 10 years and loved that car. The only car that I've managed to sell for more than I payed for it. I've just bought a manual E92 M3 which I'm really enjoying. I work from home a lot so its not a daily driver which is just as well as not very fuel efficient. Just love high revving normally aspirated engines.

    The 996 with the Aero Upgrade really looks good even with Fried Egg Headlights ( not keen on stock) . Youve bought a Real nice Spec. All the bit i would have. If you ever do a Clutch I'd put an SMF as it would suit the car nicely, even if it had slight clatter on stop up, for the GT3 experience and nicer revving. The interior, being a slimmer build the Seats would be my bag but can appreciate it might not be for you but some Recaro Sportsers would be a Really good Seats. Nice Purchase with lots of Potential 😊

  • @normanjohnston1221
    @normanjohnston12217 ай бұрын

    If you are thinking of going bact to original spec there should be a lable under the front bonnet which gives codes fro the options fitted to the car as it left the factory. A lot have gone missing over the years, but a dublicate should be in the sevice record. Likely to be very little original paint on the car. Original paint is, from memory only 70- 80 microns thick . I bought mine in 2012 when "only" 12 years old and when I took my paint guage over it only the roof was original, (and I know it hadn't bee crashed). The scuttlebutt is that whenever an OPC took a 996 in part exchange more than 2 years old they gave it a front end respray as a matter of course. Be intersested on your thoughts in comparing it to your C4S.

Personally, I wouldn't try putting it back to stock, I would actually strip it out inside, change the wheels, put track rubber on, and upgrade the brakes and bushes making up the suspension, and get the geometry sorted. I think it would be a fab trackday car, and keep your M4 for the road which is what it's designed for. As for the dog, it needs lowering a bit, some decent rubber, and maybe a light machine polish.

    rough paint suggests its needs decon mate. I need to shoot an update on that test panel that has MOHS on it but thats been way over 6 months and its buzzing away still. So I would wash it with a reasonably strong alkaline prewash, then maybe an acid shampoo or you could use Gyeon spot. You could also try using the gyeon fallout remover wash I think its called restart. Hopefully that should clean off whatevers burying the coating.

    Nice car, centre console delete is perfect and gt3 standard, put standard air box back on with a K and N panel filter that’ll get bhp back up to scratch, colour code the cage I would say…. Nice car with lots of potential, I’d even get genuine CD-R 22 stereo and plug a Bluetooth(aux)module on the back to bring stereo up to date while retaining originality, hardback sport seats would be the way to go if the buckets are not to your liking, could colour code the backs of the seats too, loads of potential, I wish you all the best with it… oh 1 more thing, ashtray delete(non smokers package)looks great and a cheap upgrade, plus an original GT3 I’m led to believe come with 5mm spacers all round as standard… someone correct me if I’m wrong please

    thanks mate some great suggestions. agree on OEM head unit. ash tray delete sounds good. I think its got 5mm spacers all round might go a bite wider not sure. thinking recaro CS or sports seats not 100% sold on the red on the hard back but appreciate why that can be ace. I think problem with getting any sports seats is they will all be shagged to my OCD levels.
