My grandfather used Poulan chainsaws when I was growing up. They always seemed to work great in the 1980’s. We would cut multiple large oak trees for firewood each year. Now I wouldn’t touch one. I have a Stihl MS271 20 inch and a Husqvarna 440 18 inch with X-Force bar and chain . They both work great around the yard .

Nothing wrong with the 170! I use mine to cut stuff out of the creek so the bar is always in the water. It keeps my good saws from becoming beaters!

i can only imagine how much that would have hurt to get clocked in the head by that falling branch. watching the shock load when it hit him really opened my eyes to the potential danger to felling trees and to spree hangers in general. im glad that you guys take the time and investment into your safety with helmets, chaps/pants, and eyes/ears/hand protection. your main goal when going out onto a job isnt always to get the job done, but to be able to come home in the same shape that you left home. no sense in putting yourself into a dangerous situation without the proper ppe to back you up.

I just bought that craftsman last week then started looking for tree channels and came across you guys. For what im doing with it i have been completely satisfied with it. Im a plumber from Connecticut enjoying ur guys ‘s videos great job keep it up 👌

That Poulan Pro is actually produced by Husqvarna. I had some small Husqvarna hobby chainsaw with the same buttons/levers/gas&oil caps, even the same exhaust (Not a good chainsaw). If the carb is Husqvarna made, you will need a special tool/key to be able to adjust the gas/air mix. The Craftsman in your video is a Chinese 3800 model chainsaw (don't know anything about them).

Craftsman just came out with a new and improved version of that saw. When you fire it up, the trees implode.

I'm a big Echo/Shindaiwa fan as well. My big complaints with them are: the stock carbs + muffler are super restricted, maybe even moreso than the other big names because of possibly stricter emissions control in Japan, and they still haven't produced a 90cc competitor. Sure the 7310 or even the 620 will handle 95% of trees here in the midwest, but in the PNW I'd wager that the $1k the 7310 costs could go towards something with a lot more power. As for top handles, nothing beats Echo currently imo.

@@jedimaster197 I got a CS-400, first saw I ever bought as a matter of fact before actually starting to work in the industry. Then I added a CS-271t and CS-620p. Both great saws, but I will say the 271t does have its limits in terms of power. Although I know there’s new top handles with more power available now.

@@WeAreTheSHWE Agreed , I adjusted the carb and modified the Exhaust , by drilling a few holes for flow inside exhaust box and cut off the defector plate on the exhaust guide, on the cs- 590.. Saw works way better now, now its way more peppy

Echos are a really good saw

I have my fathers old craftsman chainsaw from the early 90’s. He used that thing all the time out on his farm. Not the most powerful of course but she never let him down.

I have owned the Poulan pr5020 for 5 +years, bought from Tractor Supply for $200. I have only had to replace chains and one bar. From what I understand the Poulan saws are Husqvarna base models. I understand these aren't professional saws but I've had a positive experience with the one I purchased.

I bout a (green) Poulan as my first chainsaw many years ago. It found its way to the dumpster after about 5 times of using it. I have been purchasing Stihl ever since!

I actually have the same Poulan saw that I bought very cheap from a friend, for limbing. It was brand new and never used and it starts up in less than 6 pulls and runs really nice..really makes you wonder why yours is giving you trouble

The shade being constantly thrown in this video is hilarious! 😂 If this isn’t a pro saw commercial I don’t know what is. It’s not about whether it gets it done, it’s about how much you have to fight the tool to get it done. Awesome video!

My Pullin Farm Pro 375 from the 80s is a beast. Great firewood saw. Pre chain brake. Much heavier than your purse.

I have been an arborist since the 1980s. Along the way I withdrew from the battles about "best" saw and "best" truck. I decided that if it works well then it's good equipment. I don't know if it's still true, but for many years it was Poulan who made the Craftsman chain saws. Along with a few of the big brands, the Poulan, Craftsman, Echo and others have done well for me. Both climbing and ground work. And even a certain amount of logging & forestry. My trucks have usually been Ford & Chevy/GMC. If it worked good I would get it and use it. One thing we forget to say is, if the chain is new or correctly sharpened, and the engine runs reliably, then you probably have a good saw. It cuts well doesn't it? I also studied things that help. Such as spikes on the saw, the details of good chain, filter, bar, sprocket & other items of maintenance. I often have spare parts in the field: a good selection of saw and common tools, spark plugs, filters, screws, nuts, plug gapper, etc. It saves time when I can rescue myself in case of incident. And by the way, Stihl makes some of the best tools for bar cleaning & maintenance. But you can't grease the tip on most Stihl bars. To me that's a fault. I prefer a good quality bar on which I can KNOW the tip bearings are well cared for. I run too much grease through the tip bearings because I am also flushing out dirt and gunk. I roll the chain a but then squirt it again. Now I know every roller in the bearing is cared for. It rolls smoothly and lasts a lot longer. Let's talk about hand saws some time. There's more than meets the eye. 🌲 Michael.

I have a 20 yr old Craftsman I have abused the piss out of it cutting logs and trees way bigger than it was made for and its still rocking today smokes a little but starts right up and never fails. Only thing I ever replaced was the home-owner chain with a Oregon chain.

Watching you and randy together is awesome. You should try and get Gordy to mess around with both of those saws and see what he can get them too to. Don’t think there’s too many craftsman’s that are tuned up 😂

Poulan junk? Absolutely. The carbs and intake in newer ones cause many issues. Most never run right. And bottom ends don't hold up. The older generations, different story. Can be great saws, highly modifiable, tough. The Craftsman? Great saws. As long as they aren't the rebranded Poulans to Craftsman, that circulated for a short time. Rebranded Poulans of older models, just as good as older Poulans. (Identical saws) And there are MANY Newer Craftsman that are tuned up, used for personal use as well as "racing" etc. Great for tuners, mods, anything.

It is amazing what a 40-55cc chainsaw can do, if it is a good brand, sharp chain and tuned.

Bad sign when the saw comes with the tools attached. 😆 I love your enthusiasm

I have some DeWalt tools that include the hardware changing tools, such as a circ saw with an attached wrench to change the blade. I'd consider that commercial grade as many carpenters use the same model that I am describing. I wish they would have done that with the 60V angle grinder, since all it needs is an allen wrench, and that would be even easier to attach.

They are better than they use to be but craftsman is still junk, the cylinders are trashed within 100 hours I’d say 90% of the time

I got about 2 years of abuse out of the poulan 50 cc. The tool attached to the saw was my favorite feature. They bog down bad, but they get the job done kinda.

I think the craftsman deserves some serious mods and a good chain to see what it's really capable of.

Great video!! I actually own that same Poulan saw and I got to say it's my most used saw. I grew up with stihl saws that my pap owned and I worked for my neighbor when i was a teenager that had a tree service and he had all stihl and echo saws. When I bought my house 6 years ago and had a tree come down. I bought that poulan saw at my local tractor supply on sale as the first saw I actually owned myself, thinking I would only use it once and awhile as a homeowner. I now have been heating my house with wood full time for 3 years now. I actually own a few better saws now and I still find my self using that poulan the most ! It's the one I keep in my truck full time now. I really dont wory about if someone steals it ( like i do with my other saws) It starts every time at every temp it's over all been a great saw for me!

Same here, I bored the exhaust and actually tuned it properly. It starts and rips every time I need it. Been cutting 8-10 cords a year for about 4 years now to heat my house with it.

The only way this video could have got any better is it ending with you and Randy eating Cinnabon. I was truly hoping for it the entire time.

I really like the direction you are taking the channel. I've been a watcher for years and have to say your content is getting better. Also about seventeen years ago, my first hurricane I went work my dad and a buddy of his bought two poulons to work the hurricane with. One was a wood shark and I can't remember what the other one was. They worked the entire hurricane with them two saws and made a ton of money. Back then I was just a log dollying brush dragger

I have that Poulan Pro saw but I got it for $80 from Woot! The starter is plastic and I ended up pulling the rope right through it. It's actually a Husqy part to replace.

Before I got my Husqvarna, Poulan was my brand. The 50cc PP5020AV with a good chain and proper tune, actually did quite well. That being said, my Poulans don't get used at all any more. You get what you pay for.

That Poulan is exactly the same as my Mc Culloch, same little blue pull out choke bar etc, and it sounds exactly the same, rough as a badgers arse until its been running about 5 minutes. Never let me down yet though, and TBH is a great little saw for the money. Takes some starting when it hasnt been run for a while

Poulan actually makes craftsman chainsaws.Either one of those saws will work great for the average home owner.

Man its crazy that same 50cc poulan pro model used to be sold at lowes around 12 years ago. I suppose the "newer" one does have slightly different plastic cover, but still has the same problem getting it going and keeping it going lol. I always wonder why husqvarna quit selling the brand in stores, as long as you didn't let them set for a long time with gas in them they ran fine...

I've had decent luck out of Poulan, they always need carb adjustments, I break them in rich and we had one that lasted 15 years cutting moderate amounts of firewood and was used to clear trails

I bought the $49 harbor freight electric saw. Later for 4 jobs then the smoke came out. Not bad for the money. Looking at the ported Husqvarna makes me want one. I’m too old to start using one full time though

I was bored the other night and was looking on google for the best chainsaws and those same ones came up. Lucky for me, I was just awake enough to realize that it would be a bad late night purchase had I bought them for fun. Now I have 2 Farmertec’s on the way lol. Should have just went to bed.

Had to adjust the carb right out of the box on my Poulan pro too. Muffler mod and air box holes made a big difference. Got it for $170 and it fits my needs so no complaints but I'll certainly get a nicer bigger saw someday. Great video!

I'm thinking running a tank of gas through that pro and then adjust the carb. Should always adjust when warmed up. They work but wear out quick. Plastic case and cheap metals.

If I am not wrong, Poulan was bought by Husqvarna. Husqvarna Corporation, a Swedish organization, is currently manufacturing Poulan chainsaws. It has several production facilities across North America and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

@@dees3835 That is interesting about the craftsman, I did not know that. I have a POULAN 4218 that is about 15 years old now. She doesn't have the power and speed of my other saws, but she does get the job done, and has paid for herself many times over.

@@dees3835 Husky manufactures the majority of the new Craftsman saws. The Poulan saws are supposed to be as well, but unfortunately everyone seems to have similar experiences with them. Which is a shame because the older ones were AWESOME.

I'm unashamed to say that I have the s205 craftsman saw. It's no Stihl but as a casual and occasional tree-cutting homeowner, I didn't need one. It's worked reliably straight out of the box for a couple years. It does everything I need it to do. I'd eventually like to get another saw that's a bit nicer and keep that one as my back up/ beater but until then, it fits all of my needs! The S205 also has the bar oil fill in the normal spot where that 16 inch one there doesn't fyi.

Use a old laundry detergent jug with the push button release thing. Changes lives.

I have that poulan pro saw..you got to regap the plug a little larger than recommended. As it heats u p The plug gap shrinks due to the heat.the you tube video I watched actually kept mine from ending up in my neighbors back yard.

I used an old Craftsman (46cc I believe) with a 20" bar on it in my formative years. Served me well enough as a young buck with no better gear. My brother in law still has that 20+ year old re-badged Poulan to this day, only thing he doesn't have is the case it came in. I kept that to store my truck Husky in, cause ain't no one stealing a Craftsman saw out the back of a truck.. LOL

What you just went through with the Poulan Pro is exactly my experience with my 50cc one with the 20" bar. I got scammed by the "it's built by Husqvarna" BS, because it technically is, but a Husqy it is not. I messed with and tinkered with that saw from brand new for 5 years before I gave up on it. Didn't ever want to run right, right from brand new. It was kicking chains the first cuts I made with it. The oiler was pouring way too much oil and it had no adjustment. The handle was designed in such a way that it wouldn't engage the throttle if you pushed down on the handle, even lightly. Probably more I'm forgetting. Not a cheap saw for what it was either. Never again.

The funny thing is the Craftsman is ALSO supposed to be a Husky inside, but it started on the fist pull every time, while the poo-lon wouldn't start at all. If ya want a reliable Poulan you gotta buy one from the 80s or older.

@@jimbusmaximus4624 Yeah, I've talked to a bunch of people that had older Poulans and they swore by them, so your assessment sounds spot on. Amazing that a no-name Chinese brand can sell a similar size saw that starts on the second pull right out of the box for less than $150 and these guys can't seem to build a saw that can even be tuned to run properly for $350. It's almost like they're doing it on purpose so you buy the more expensive saw.

I have an old redmax that looks just like the craftsman that I bought for 50$. Its 38cc and I like it better then my echo cs 310 in term of power to weight ratio ! Starts easily even without a primer bulb.

That’s exactly my experience with Polan. Had a craftsman mad by them years ago. It would run once it had ran for a while but once it died or had sit for a while it would die. Was going to have it warranties until I found out the carb likely needed adjusting and I would be charged for it since it required a special tool I didn’t own at the time. And being charge 100 dollars to adjust a carb on a $80 dollar saw at the time didn’t seem right

The craftsman is made by MTD. I have that saw but branded as Remington. Had it a long time but after doin a gasket delete and port and polish I take her out all the time as a backup saw for firewood but got a lot of work into it lol. It's the 46cc Remington Outlaw lmao but was 100 new and now more expensive than both those saws yet the craftsman is the same 🤣🤣🤣

Do a Test on the echo cs-620p chainsaw sometime..

I have one with 27"bar cut a larger tulip poplar the other day made quick work of it. Used my echo 355t to limb it up. And the 620 too buck the trunk the 27" bar was barely big enough to cut in one pass

The best practice for the poulan is to hold the bar and use the body like an axe.

When I was a teenager, my father had a Poulan chainsaw. I didn't use any protective equipment because I was a stubborn guy at that time. The simple fact was that I only did what I wanted to do. I'm certainly not hurt because of carelessness, though. The only times I was hurt was other than using a chainsaw. The quality of that cutting device was excellent. I wonder what happened to that wonderful company in recent years? Is it poor quality control? They certainly aren't as excellent as they were in the seventies and eighties. He additionally had a green chainsaw, except I don't remember what brand it was and he had an electric version in the basement of the house, where the firestove was located. I had so many wonderful years when I was younger in tge eastern side of this city. That's what I wanted to share with you, Jake.

read reviews on the Poulan. every Poulan has this issue... but once you get that issue resolved it will do just fine like the Craftsman. I've had one for 6 years and use it about once or twice a year and its been just fine after that initial repair.

Not quite 50yrs but early 1980s I ran a Poulan 2000? no chain brake out cut my Stihl 041 I was using at the time, Early 1990s I switched to my all time favorite saw the Stihl 044.

Guy across the street gave me a saw when he moved. Same wrench setup as the Poulan, narrow chain- a Homelight if I remember correctly. Ground limbing so far. Have to figure out the chain pitch and replace cause it looks like they were cutting ground instead of wood. Price was better than yours, but you have a new chain!

Jake- I figured that you would have a set of the “ fits everything “ saw screwdrivers in your go bag. New saws are notoriously rich…..by now I assumed that you could tweak the needles. You can get Gordie to give a “ saw tuning by a professional “ video and make a zillion thumbs up views 😂

I have the older version of that poulan. It's a great saw and once you can the carburetor tuned right they are good running saws. I also put a set of felling spikes on mine and it really helps

I have the same model as the one in the video. It took a bit of running it but it finally idled on it’s own and wouldn’t shut off like that. I didn’t use it often or much. Probably only like 5-7 times at about 20 minutes each. I square filed mine and it eats pretty well. Didn’t hesitate at all cutting through a fence in a tree trunk 🤙🏼

Don't tell randythemandy this but I saw a commercial last night that PizzaHut now has Cinnabon as a dessert!!!

I just drilled the cap on the bar oil container, and stuck a random tube in. Been working for 10 years (I have 2 now heh heh). Just push on the jug a little, it goes faster.

I have an older poulan pro, not the model you got mine is older and doesnt look as plastic, it was my grandpas saw on his farm and i keep it maintained and its a good truck saw, it has never given me any issues and it starts first pull or two every single time, ( my maintenancing is more than most though haha ) now for work I have my 200t and my collection of work saws, but for the garage saw I cant complain ❤

I own this saw for cutting brush and crap when I’m clearing my lawn. I got mine from harbor freight so maybe a slightly different model!? 🤷🏽‍♂️

My grandfather had a poulan chainsaw I can say that I don’t think I ever saw it run without having to pull it 750 times. Fast forward to after he passes away and there are trees to be trimmed and cut on the farm and my old man goes and buys the same poulan pro chain saw the same one you all have and it started about as reliably as the one from the 80’s, complete junk. I watched your Holtzforma video and spent 200 on a g366 the stihl ms360 clone starts on the second or third pull cold and is a beast compared to the poulan. Love the channel thanks for the content.

I have a stihl and a craftsman, surprisingly I find myself grabbing the craftsman when doing odd jobs around the farm

I learned something today... Husqvarna makes Poulin Pro and Craftsman gas saws. "To the brand spec", which I would have to assume is to a lesser quality.

I bought a Poulan a few years back out of need cause my ol mccolloch eager beaver was 3 hours away at my parents, and one of my trees fell in my neighbors driveway after a bad storm. If I needed a saw more than a couple of times a year I'd buy a way better say. That poulan drives me nuts. I've fucked with the carb and no matter what I can't get it to idle without dying unless I have it turned up enough that the chain spins. I'm a little jealous of this video. I paid like 50 bucks more for the same poulan and I didn't get the sick bar tool and storage spot 😂

I have a husky 120 mark 2 I've cut a lot of fire wood she's still going always blast it off with the compressor and it stays sharp

I was given a free craftsman once. Looked like a 40cc or so poulan to me. Decided to use it as a limb saw. Fueled and oiled it up, cranked it a few times and it hit and then clunked. I looked down and the clutch was laying on the ground. It broke the crank at the clutch when it fired off lol

I got that Poulan… it is def not tuned out of the box… it took a few minutes to tune and has been a good firewood saw for the last season. It starts on 4th pull and will idle all day.

The Craftsman is actually good... I own one and kinda like it tbh despite having pro saws. Also on the craftsman there's just crazy chain stretch, had the chain come off on me too.

From experience doing storm cleanup after Katrina Rita storms in east Texas, 1 Stihl 210 with 1 operator will out cut 5 big box store chainsaws with 5 operators. Only saws worth it that I've used are Stihl, Husqvarna, or Echo.

I just bought that Poulan at Tractor Supply a couple days ago. It's working well when it runs, but I think it's flooding out at idle. Glad to know I didn't get a lemon. >.> Oh well, the price was right and California just outlawed gas saws. Just gotta tune it.

A 50cc poulan pro was my first saw, was ok until the motor blew up lol. I still use a 38cc poulan for small work fairly frequently. Otherwise I stick to stihl an Husqvarna
