I Bought Some Amazon Returns Because I Never Learn | Ashens

You know who sells a lot of things over the internet? Jeff Amazon! He's got loads of warehouses and everything. And sometimes items are sent back by unhappy customers, and some bloke on eBay sticks them all in grey bags and I buy a big box of them for some reason. Huzzah!
It's a proper random selection this lot. But the main thing is there are several cases for totally unknown items! Huzzah again!

    There are different petri dishes for different purposes, but those actually look normal. The lid is meant to be loosely sitting on top to allow for ventilation, and plastic ones are popular since to use a large amount of glass ones would be expensive and maybe even hazardous (and most sterile tools are one-use, very wasteful I know). I don't want to think about carrying a 10 stack of them around if they're all glass.

  • @GirishManjunathMusic

    @GirishManjunathMusic

    I've carried 10 glass petri dishes filled with agar. They're not that heavy, not at that size. Also, you can resterilize glass dishes. You just stick them open in the oven at 200 for 2 hours. Tissue culture does tend to use a lot of one-use plastic stuff though.

    @@GirishManjunathMusic Nah. You normally wrap the dish once it's inoculated to avoid opening it accidentally, and the plastic (I assume some kind of polycarbonate) is fairly strong. If you drop one from your hand it won't even crack. At the worst the culture is ruined by cross-contamination or something, depending on what you're doing. The way to make a huge mess with Petri dishes is to drop a stack of 20 when you're moving them to the fridge for cooling, because at that point the agar is still liquid. It'll go everywhere and once it cools it'll stick to surfaces.

  • @GirishManjunathMusic

    @GirishManjunathMusic

    @@450AHX no I've worked with plenty of agar plates and boats and gels. For over 6 years. You're right that a well-wrapped stack wouldn't be too damaged by dropping it, but if it was a single plate, dropped while moving it from the incubator to the hood? That can and has been very bad for people. Especially if you're working in an underfunded understaffed overworked government hospital laboratory and you don't follow most of the best practices as they have been abandoned in favor of speed. And also you definitely would have gotten chewed out by the laboratory assistants and your superiors for hours if you had dropped an inoculated plate no matter how well it was wrapped.

    i worked at as a trainee lab tech for a bit at my old high school and we used those plastic petri dishes all the time, they're used for low level culturing, glass ones are used if you're working with stuff that needs to be properly sterile because they can be autoclaved, but plastic ones you can scrub out with bleach and set more agar jelly in them cos they're being used to grow bacterial cultures for science projects instead of for medical use

    Also, some of the later versions of Android had that feature removed. IIRC the feature was first added in ice cream sandwich which was also called android 4.0 released back in 2011. So it is possible the device you tested it on did not have that feature as the phone or tablet manufacturer may have removed it. On one of his previous videos like this, Ashens mentioned that a lot of these Chinese sellers send out junk to random or even fake addresses on purpose. It’s called brushing. It’s a way for them to fraudulently boost sales and obtain positive feedback for their clients' products on e-commerce sites. So the package will bounce back. That’s why a lot of those shops are packed with that unwanted chinese crap. Or at least that’s what I’m thinking. Could be wrong.

Everything is one flat price, which varies depending on the day of the week. I visited multiple times after the store first opened, but I haven't visited in over 2 years. The reason is because there's rarely anything good or useful. Just a lot of random, off-name plastic junk from China.

Listed as 15 'returned boutique packages'- decided to make an event of it with friends over some drinks. The results were pretty underwhelming- clothes of various degrees of hideousness (a few had suspicious stains of interest) and what appeared to be a silver engagement ring. I thought I'd lucked out with that one, but a quick trip to the jeweler the next day indicated it was costume jewelry. At least the experience of opening real life loot boxes, with friends and drinks, was kinda fun.

    Plastic petri dishes are extremely commonly used in pretty much any biological laboratory, especially for microbes but I've also used them for insects and other small organisms such as fish larvae. The plastic ones are popular because they're cheap, "disposable" and usually sterile in the packaging. Because it's often desirable to have as little contamination of other bacteria as possible if you're growing them, and because bacteria grown in petri dishes can be dangerous (ex. multiresistent) they are not typically reused for that purpose and are disposed of in biohazard waste. Although usually they're bought with some sort of substrate (usually nutrient agar) already in them, empty ones are also used in enormous quantities at biolabs, and thus this whole package is likely significantly less than £1.
