These 5VZ's are great engines to learn on since they are non interference. When I replaced the head gaskets on mine I timed the cams wrong on one side, so I'm very glad that I was unable to ruin my engine. 😂 What a great find Jared. I hope you get this ride in tip top shape.

I had a rear differential ring gear failure in my 2000. Decided to kick a tooth. Rebuilt the entire rear axle from brake lines to a whole new carrier from toyota with just good ol hand tools. Getting the factory 4:10 is impossible on aftermarket, so biggest expenditure was getting a fully set new carrier assembly from Toyota. Cost not a whole lot more than the time and hassle of trying to rebuild old one.

Had a 97 4runner SR5. Loved it. Was a beast in the snow. I did a EMU lift, new timing belt, water pump, radiator, rear axle seals, f&r brakes, drive shaft boots, and a vent on the rear diff. I painted the bumpers, grill, floor boards and fender flares with a bed liner. Did some polish on the bright red paint. Only thing I wish I had was the sport raised hood. Then the big D took it away from me.

I'm enjoying watching this, I had a 97 4Rnr, and never managed to stop transmission fluid mixing with water in the cooling system, despite changing absolutely everything in the cooling system, I eventually lost that engine, due to losing water through heating system hoses hidden at the back of the engine, and a blown heater core, water got into the engine and it hydro-locked, I sold the vehicle to someone who put another engine into it and it's still being used. I replaced that 4Rnr with a 2000 4Rnr, I've so far had no cooling issues with this one and have put good money into it to improve and maintain it, now at 199,000 miles and running sweetly.

I need to follow this advice better when getting projects. I paid $3000 for an s2000 this summer. Didn't realize a new motor was going to cost $4500 because of my location. Luckily it had some nice aftermarket parts that didn't really add any value I was able to sell, as well as parting out the blown motor. After all that was sold I was able to offset the purchase price completely

The angels are great and the devils don't scare me at all. It has over 270k miles and still runs like a champ. Doesn't burn or leak any oil, Trans shifts smooth, chassis is tight and rust free, and no electrical gremlins. To answer your question "what would you like to start with as a project"? Where I live there is one easy choice - a 88 - 97 Chevy or GMC 1/2 ton pickup with a 4.3L V6. They are good trucks and very popular but the V6, to a great many owners, isn't worth the money to overhaul and they think it's too involved to do a V8 swap. The fact is, in most cases, you can drop a 5.7L right in with an engine mount change and a V8 ECU and distributor. If the original trans was a standard you might have to upgrade to a heavier one but most of the automatics were 700R4 or 4L60. Either is OK with an OE 305 or 350 CID V8. Good running, decent looking OBS trucks are usually a quick flip and a reasonable profit for the time and investment.

Fun fact! The 4runner is actually an american design originally! A US dealer loved the Hilux and really wanted a ranch wagon like it. So what happened? The very first 4runners were made when this dealer got permission from toyota to sell Hilux modified by Winnebago! They added a fiberglass top and another sest in the modified bed along with other tweaks. The toyota executives loved it so much and was so in demand? Toyota decided to make it official! The rest is history.

The rear axle seal problem is 95% a plugged breather on top of the axle. Guess how I found out? Fixed the 1st one. Then the other side went out! Read and researched tons of forums.... cheap breather was plugged. Now I check it every oil change. 332,000 miles 3.4L gen 1 Taco still going strong.

I took a big gamble a couple years ago and bought a 1988 Pontiac Firebird without too much forethought. I knew it ran and drove and that was it. I later found that the passenger window was shattered, and the steering column was jacked up (tilt and telescope were busted). So I did the right thing and stripped it down for full-on restoration over time 😅

I just want to have fun with what i buy... I bought a 82 Vette with a knocking motor for 3k in excellent shape, had the motor redone for 2k including aluminum heads and it was a beast...... For what it was. Had fun and made money when i sold it. The key is having a good time, maybe making a buck, and most of all getting to know new communities of car folks. The Vette guys were not really my type, for the most part, BUT it was a cool experience! i regret nothing

As a former Mk3 Supra owner, I am well aware of the security system creating a no-start situation. This knowledge served me well, earlier this summer I was at the gas station and I hear a car just turning over as the owner was trying to get it to start. Absolutely no spark, just starter noises. Look over and see an early 90's Odyssey (i think) and the owner just perplexed. Recalling the previous issues with my Supra, I walked over to the guy and said, ' I know this sounds crazy, but take the key out of the ignition and the lock and unlock your driver door with the key. Then try to start it. He looked at me like i was crazy, but gave it a shot. It fired right up and his expression will live rent-free in my head forever. Walked away to virtual fireworks going off in my head like I was Kenny Powers.

I've flipped a few Toyotas recently. You really can't go wrong, they are so well built. And people know this, so when you fix them up you have no trouble reselling them.

A few years back, one of my friends owned a 5VZ prado that sprung a coolant leak from the lower rad hose, she drove it for about another 400m before pulling over and figuring out all the coolant had been dumped. Surprisingly, the engine was completely fine after having the hose replaced and rad filled up. These iron block toyota engines seem pretty hard to kill, If my 2zz-ge dumped its coolant it would spin all its bearings, crack a cylinder and a wall😂

Wow other Jared. I just bought an 04 Tacoma in February. I’ve been driving it every day for work. No illusions of it looking great but I’ve been knocking out the things it needs a little at a time. Found a 4 runner sitting for a while at a property I manage and I’m thinking about making the guy an offer.
