I Bought a Sega Dreamcast in 2024

One console I've always considered getting was the very last console made by Sega before becoming just game developers, the Sega Dreamcast. The home console that brought us such amazing games like Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Shuffle, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone, and so many more. While the console didn't do well during it's lifetime, it's still loved by a loyal community today that continue to play and enjoy what it has to offer. Growing up I played on the PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, so this is my very first Sega console. So how did it go buying a console that was released in 1999 in 2024? Lets find out.

I just want to say thank you for all the support on this video. It’s been fun reading people stories on getting their Dreamcast, and all the game recommendations. Many of you also gave me so much advice on the console and reasons for why mine had some issues. And here is where I have some bad news, as some of you mentioned, my disc drive is going, so I can either replace it, or do what many suggested, getting a GDEMU. I would love to obtain the real games for a collection, but learning the cds can deteriorate, the best choice to make is going with GDEMU. It’ll take time to receive it but once it’s in I plan to make more videos on this amazing console. Plus now I can get every game you all suggested. Shenmue, crazy taxi, rayman 2, resident evil, sonic, etc.. Thank you all again for liking, subscribing, and commenting, it’s mean a lot to me.

Just some advice on the GDEMU, most ones you get will be clones and you absolutely should not upload the firmware on them or it will brick. There are two games that won't work perfectly on older firmwares, but it'll be fine. One of the Resident Evil games (has a patch to fix it) and Skies of Arcadia (skip the intro and the game will work fine). Happy Dreamcast playing, I plan on adding my Dreamcast story to the comments after work!

@@NottJoeyOfficial Thanks for the advice. I've seen that most GDEMU's sold online now are mostly clones, I picked up a 5.20.5 version which I heard fixes issues with games like RE. I don't imagine I'll update the firmware for it, as long as it plays the games I want it should be good.

To be fair Mega Drive was the only truly popular Sega console and Dreamcast with Saturn weren't even sold in plenty of markets. When I was a kid I didn't even know what Nintendo was because their consoles just weren't sold and those that existed were imported. Also game magazines never even mentioned Sega or Nintendo making consoles only Sony and rarely Microsoft.

Market value's still hovering at about $100, not 150, and they couldn't even clean the thing much less refurb it for that upcharge. I fully agree about collectors and resellers driving up prices to stupid levels though, I barely even collect anymore because it's not worth the cost. I'm just glad I started collecting 20-25 years ago. Unfortunately anything I want that I don't yet own is insanely expensive now. And he's right, last time I saw a CDX it was north of $600. But I mean, going from 2019 to 2020, Dreamcast went from $25 to $100 real quick.

It’s so nice to hear about younger generations getting into older consoles. Especially Sega who was such a huge player in the 90s. I grew up with Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast and couldn’t recommend them enough. As far as recommendations go I’m going to recommend Soul Caliber, Shenmue and House of the Dead. All are pretty affordable still. Also if you have access to a VGA adapter connect the Dreamcast up to a desktop monitor. The picture is so clear it could be mistaken for modern gaming. I also really recommend the Saturn library if you like anything with Japanese influence

I strongly disagree with your House of the Dead recommendation, and it's not because I don't like the game. So first of all, he's gonna need to find a light gun, and I think the cheapest of the three options is like $50-60. This goes without saying that he's gonna need a CRT tv as well. Secondly, this port of HotD is nearly impossible to calibrate the gun to. I tried three separate light guns back in either March or April of this year, none of them cooperated. You know what they worked perfectly with right out of the box with, no calibration? Virtual Cop 2 in the Sega Smash Pack. Many other people have documented this problem, it's a known thing. VC2 on the other hand, laser accuracy, no setup.

And yeah, nothing lasts forever so if there’s a way to play DC games not on a DC, that’s preferable. I don’t think this can be repeated until there’s a massive change in how we game. DC released just as the internet as we now know it was being born and we got online and games together everyone was excited. There was no cynicism or jaded social media, it was all fun. We were focused on games and gaming and those days are just gone.

I didn't have much money at the time, but I was able to scoop up Sonic Adventures 1 & 2, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Daytona USA, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue 1 & 2. Most games were 10-20$, I bought an arcade stick two VMUs, a 4x-memory card and a mouse. I remember feeling really bad about burning so much money. But honestly I have been playing on it basically every week since then. And those initial game purchases were such bangers! So many hours of fun! And since then I have replaced the optical drive with a GDEMU (the drive doesn't perform well anymore, I'm still contemplating on trying to restore/fix it)

I had all the Sega consoles starting from the Master System II up until the Dreamcast (except for the 32X and Mega CD which were not consoles per se). To this day, the Dreamcast is still my favourite console ever! I loved the controllersa and the arcade games were awesome! Such a shame Sega blew up because of bad strategy when faced with a giant like Sony, back then. Daytona USA, 18 Wheeler, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Metropolis Street Racing, Shenmue, Virtua Tennis, NBA 2K… Goo’old times!

Awww. My older brother got a Dreamcast in Christmas of 2000. He was 14 at the time, My older sister was 12, and I was 5 and we were living in the Bronx NYC. I remember that after we all finished opening our presents, we went over to the tv in the bedroom me and my older sister shared to hook up the dreamcast and see it live for the first time. He played through Emerald Coast in Sonic Adventure and we were all amazed. There were other games he got / rented as a kid like Power Stone and Shenmue. There were days when my older brother and sister were at school, and I was home all day with our Mother. I would just pop in the Dreamcast and fool around in Sonic Adventure as Tails. I bought a Dreamcast again myself in 2015 off ebay. It was a shock with how small the system is and how loud it was to load a game. For a while my older brother and I would go out to retro gaming stores and collect for it. For his birthday, I bought Shenmue and I just let that intro run on repeat until he came into the living room and I could surprise him. We played through Shenmue and laughed at the horrible voice acting… lol. My Brother wondered how it never stood out to him until now. My brother owns it now since he cares for it more than I do. I’m more into emulating. I actually have a portable emulation machine.

Two Dreamcast Games I can highly recommend are Fur Fighters and Toy Commander. They’re both very fun but also fairly common games on the system so you should be able to get your hands on them fairly easily (AtLeast thats the case here in the UK) Fur Fighters - is a mix of a Banjo-Kazooie style collectathon with a third person shooter. 6 animal friends set out to save their kidnapped families. You switch between them to solve puzzles and get around the levels. If I’m honest it can be little clunky with its controls but it more then makes up for it with the games scale and charm of the characters, settings and the music. This was Dreamcast exclusive till it was re-released on Ps2 as Fur Fighters: Viggos Revenge, which changed to a cell-shaded art style. I’m not aware if there are any other difference between the versions. But I would still say the Dreamcast is my preferred version. I think it looks a lot better. Toy Commander - the premise is you’re a Kid playing with his toys. you get to complete missions, races and fight bosses while driving cars, tanks, planes and helicopters. Being small scale in regular environments like a kitchen or a bedroom is just so charming in its concept and execution. It was one of the first games I played on the Dreamcast along with Sonic Adventure.

I remember seeing the dreamcast logo on old Arsenal football shirts and thinking dreamcast was a company , once Ii found about about sega consoles I slowly feel in love with their old stuff and bought a lot of their older games on xbox live arcade and used emulators. Good to know: most of the Dreamcast library is compatible with native VGA and the results are quite stunning. If you can, ditch the composite cable and buy a VGA cable instead. AV Adapters like the one that you use in the video damages the image and can produce serious input lag so i think VGA should be the way if you play on a modern display. It's always nice to see newcomers for this fantastic machine, though !

You know what game grinds my gears? Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The damn back cover explicitly states that it IS VGA box compatible, yet it is definitely not. And the cherry on top is that even running it as an iso on my gdemu system will only display the image squished into the lower horizontal half of the screen. I can only play my physical copy if I feel like hooking up the old a/v cables to one of my CRTs. Thankfully I didn't pay anywhere near the recent prices for it, but it's a stupid expensive shelf warmer.

I missed out on having a Dreamcast back in the day. I did grow up in the '90s and I played Sega Genesis although I actually preferred SNES and I played PS1 but I also preferred N64, but I was able to play some Dreamcast thanks to some friends of my brothers who had a dream cast. In the early 2000s my family had a GameCube and I enjoyed that console and one of the first games we got on it because it was an early release on the GameCube was Sonic Adventure 2 battle. So much fun! The first time I played Sonic Adventure 1 was actually at a friend's house on historycast and then Sonic Adventure DX came out for the GameCube I think not that long after and I would get that. I'm definitely much more used to Sonic Adventure DX because that's the one I actually owned and the one I played, but it was Cool to actually play the original song Adventure on the Dreamcast before that. I also did end up playing Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast as well by playing it on my friend's Dreamcast because he could not figure out how to beat the biolizer boss so I beat it for him

Master System was not Sega's first console that would be the 1983 Sega SG-1000, and the Sonic DX is a downgrade not an upgrade from the superior Dreamcast version, to the point where effort has been made to convert Sonic DX back to the original assets on Dreamcast for the PC version (Gamecube could not handle a lot of the Dreamcast's lighting, transparency, textures and effects. One of the Dreamcast’s unique features was its PowerVR GPU. It was equipped with a hardware feature called order-independent transparency (OIT). No console before or after the Dreamcast ever had that feature built in on the hardware level, and it took many years until mainstream GPUs became capable of dealing with order-independent transparency. When the game was being ported to the Gamecube, the benefits of order-independent transparency were no longer there, and the developers ran into numerous problems involving transparent models) Lastly for Dreamcast, you want a model 1 version of the console as it can read CD-R and it's easy to burn GD-ROM ISO of expensive titles to be played on the system. It's sad what happened to Sega, though in a round about way the original Xbox was essentially Dreamcast 2 (Dreamcast was based on Sega Arcade Naomi hardware, Xbox was based on Sega Chihiro arcade hardware, Peter Moore was head of the Dreamcast, also head of the Xbox, etc).

Nice video. As a kid that bought that console a year after it launched, I was marveled at the time with the graphics. I had seen some comercials on the tv, I had a cousin that had a PS1and you could see the jump in graphical fidelity. I'd say this period, 3rd gen (nes) to 6th gen(ps2) were the most incredible for consumers as the jumps in graphics and the size of games were balooming. It felt like witchcrafty. I grew with a megadrive/genesis and the jump to the ps1 was incredible for me. Me and my friends were always in awe while playing winning eleven and looking at those blocky polygons thinking: "My god, look that is indeed Roberto Carlos!". Them the jump to the dreamcast/ps2 was even crazier... I remember thinking we couldn´t get more real than what we had on the ps2. A point I would like to make because I find it fascinating is the following: Sega was in dire straits since the mid 90's thanks to the saturn. Looking at all the books, media and everything I could find in this strange hobby of mine, sega put itself into a costly corner based on marketing and edginess in the united states market. Consoles are already very costly to R&D and put into the market, but marketing is even more especially when you build your strategy the way sega did. They invested a lot of money thinking on recovering it with game sales but there weren't enough of it and when the ps2 launched in japan sega was basically bankrupt. Actually, were not for their president at the time, isao okawa, they would have gone under and probably be bought by microsoft and scrapped like rare was. Sega was never meant to launch the dreamcast, he wanted to bail out of the console industry during the megadrive era because of the cost. Yet when push came to shove, he financed the R&D of the dreamcast and did everything he could to make the console sucessful. Sadly, as stated, it didn´t work. He literally forgave the debt and gave back all the shares he had from sega, which amounted to more than 500 million dollars, soon after passing because of cancer. No joke, that move saved sega from bankrupcy. I am always impressed by the balls of sega to die trying than to fold and give up. Not financially responsible, but admirably badass.
