I hate to say this Sheldon but if you want a clear conscience when you sell it and even more money for it then you need to overhaul the whole top end. Valve grinding, cam inspection and new lifters. Then possibly the same on the other side. It is very unusual for hydraulic lifters to bend a push rod like this unless something else happened. On the plus side this car is definitely worth the effort! Good luck

So glad good sense finally prevailed and you did what is a relatively easy job and immediately found the main issue. Pity you still have to sell it on but at least you can do so knowing what the issue is and the car may well run fine for some time before needing a more complete overhaul. This is also the kind of content I think many subscribers enjoy as it really shows what’s involved in running these classics.

To bend a rod like that with a hydraulic lifter, I would have to guess that the lifter was initially stuck in the fully retracted position and the top of the pushrod then jammed against the side of the rocker which meant that on the next stroke the valve spring either became coil bound or the piston hit the valve. As the valve does move and turn, the valve spring probably became coil bound but I would either check the top of the piston with a borescope or hammer the pushrod straight (or use an old one) and do a quick compression test. The question is then whether the lifter has now fully freed off or not. The straightened/used pushrod will allow that to be determined that as well, either by measurement or using the compression tester. Also, check the rocker for damage. Richard

This is not unusual at all on an older engine that sat for awhile I bought a 64 thunderbird last year with the 390 engine that had been sitting for three years. I tried starting it and it bent two pushrods. I used a rubber hammer on the affected valves and broke them loose. I ordered two replacement pushrods from Rock Auto put them in and all good. I have driven it for 8000 miles since then with absolutely no issues. I truly believe that if you replace the bad pushrods someone just drives the car for a year or so everything will work out fine. I don't know. how hard those particular carbs are to tune but that would be the only issue. Everything else is just basic old technology. Best of luck on selling it and now you will be able to be confident on the condition of the engine.

Sheldon,The push rod is the weak bit and the sticky valve is causing the noisy lifter..Hit the top of the valve that's stuck, squirt some wd40 down the valve guide...normally an easy fix..and put the push rod on a flat surface ,like the back of a vice and hit it straight with a club hammer.

Don’t drop a lifter down inside because it will sit on the crank and when you crank it ,it will jam between the crank and crack the block ,there hydraulic lifters check your cam lift on the rear lobes for lift as they wear
