I bought a Rolex because of Inflation (Dubai Mall Vlog)

I've never really been one for Rolex's or Patek's but these luxury status symbols are actually a strong hedge against inflation and a very unpredictable dollar. Here is the Rolex I requested to buy in the Dubai Mall.

how does a watch do this??? how does it get the fishing poles into the hands of dirt poor villagers to catch fish for their families? How does this get them the boats which can be used to help with trade and commerce? How does this setup a local food market an area can use to rent stalls and make this dude more money? or better yet, help the people in the areas where he made his money filming at ? ? ?

Solid content, good going. Daydate is class, solid piece and can’t go wrong with Rolex. However, I respectfully disagree with buying watches as an investment, for all that is to it now, luxury watches are actually significantly dropping as we speak! For reference, this is the worst time to get this specific daydate at retail. Instead I’d try and look for it preowned, you could pick it up below retail. The green dial anniversary is probably what I would battle for at retail, a safer bet if the idea is to remotely recoup most of what you would’ve paid later on. Buy what you like and buy what you would wear, don’t follow hype and trends it could bite hard.

Don't listen to the comments. Treat yourself to a Rolex to commemorate your success. Something to carry with you through life and collect memories with. And like you mentioned, it's an asset and your money is safe. You can go anywhere in the world and liquidate the watch for money in a matter of minutes. Wealthy people buy assets, not liabilities. That first daydate with green dial you pointed out is a new release this past year, very rare and you'll never get it, even as a KZread celebrity. The second daydate with olive green dial is not 11k, you're mistaken. But also a beautiful watch, moreso of a "stealth wealth" piece. But ultimately, you went with the most classic variation: yellow gold (actually champagne dial would be classic but white dial is damn nice too). It's a historic watch that has been worn by world leaders all around the world over the past few decades. Hence, earning it the nickname among collectors of "the president". It's a big hitter for sure and you should wear it (safely) and enjoy it to the fullest. Congrats on the president.

But like you said it’s a good way to move money across borders. If I did want the best bang for buck if you can get through an AD, you should get a stainless GMT, but good luck getting one. I have a new Datejust and new Stainless Submariner, Datejust is easy to get, Sub is not. AD most likely won’t get you anything that has a better grey market price than MSRP unless you spend money on other stuff like jewelry, it’s a game.

If I take inflation into the calculation, and the value before 2020 I’m well in the hole on every Rolex I ever got from the AD’s I would say. But one could argue, that the money is more stable in Rolex, compared to other watches. Selling at the same price 15-20 years later is not a profit. It’s a loss. SP500 is up 300% from year 2003 until now. Same for the MSCI… Ad to that, that you can’t “short” a watch🤥 Watches are a bad investment. What did you purchase in 2004?

Google is your friend. I appreciate you have an opinion, but that opinion has no basis in objective reality. I have owned a few Rolexes. I specifically bought this brand bc it holds its value, if not appreciate a bit. I planned on selling them later in life for close to what I paid for them. Imagine my shock in 2021 when watching an IG clip where someone showing my watch model mentioned the current aftermarket price as almost tripled what I paid. My other watches had also increased significantly. I contacted someone and sold all but one. Sure prices have now gone down, but still well above MSRP.

Legit $42k would have fed 42 families in Bali for a month. Or could have fed 40+ Bali residents for a year. When that Rolly company folds and so does the price. Was the solid gold watch worth that much at a pawn shop? No. It won't ever hold its value outside of the fictitious stories told by commission based workers. Especially buying one from middle east with their blood oil money and endless drone striking causing mass humanitarian crisis to unfold. Why support that godless part of the world??

They create their own hype which then gets retold by souless commissioned workers to sell people an over valued hunk of junk. Take that $42K watch to a pawn shop after getting it. I've become a wee bit obsessed with watches over the last 2 years and I've gained a bit of knowledge over that time. Personally, I would say your money is better spent reinvesting in your business or in something that is truly an asset not a luxury item. I know you are trying to diversify but very few watches actually appreciate over time (most of the true luxury brands simply hold their value). Obviously this watch will not cash flow so you are essentially banking on the fact that it will go up in value. The Day Date is not a limited edition watch - super easy to find out there (obviously not at retail). If you really want a watch that will go up in value look for those that are either limited edition watches or high horology complex watches (Rolex is not one of those - especially the DayDate). Check out A. Lange & Sohne, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Phillipe, F.P. Journe, Audemar Piguet, H. Moser - ALL far superior to Rolex. Rolex is just a name. Check out this A. Lange & Sohne: www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-lange-and-sohne-lange-1-time-zone-25th-anniversary-introducing. For close to the same price you could get something FAR superior, Limited Edition (about 25 made), and you won't get killed on the street for wearing it because most people have never heard of them. At the end of the day it's your money of course. I actually love the diversity in these kinds of videos - keep it up Christian!

I've now bought a number of stocks, REITS, ETF's, etc with the cash from the sale. I'm soooo much happier knowing I can get to that cash if I need it. Cheers and have a great rest of the day!

Rob, good thoughts, But I don't think he will have any chance of getting a limited edition high value Lange (the AD's simply would sell this watch to a first time buyer). If its an investment - the big question is, can I quickly sell the watch at a good price when I need to - and No watch brand is easier to get in and out of than Rolex. With Cyber crime on the rise, CBDC (Digital currency) on the radar, Bank systems crashing more often than ever, diversification is very important. Wear the Rolex, enjoy it, and sell it in 10 yrs for more than you paid for it. I own a couple of Rolex's and VC watches.

@@AM-hk3uw - Oh I have no doubt you are probably right about the Lange AM. I suspect the same is true for moving a Rolex in the future. The demand will always be there for it and lets face it - You'd have to be a true watch enthusiast to know about Lange or F.P. Journe. I think Vacheron, Patek, AP, and Rolex will always be in high demand but everyone knows about and values Rolex. There are only a few models I would covet myself but that's probably more of a monetary issue. I'll stay in the shallow end of the pool with my Omega Speedy, Mido, and my soon to be acquired Bretling Chronomat :) Thanks for the comment and have an excellent day!
