Well if you hook it up to ( for example) to the same outlet as a wall charger by Tesla then it would charge with what.. 11A max. ? It is way less than a supercharger 🤔 so it would be a slow supercharger only capapale of loading normally but not at rapid speeds 👍

Don't take it apart, because I guarantee you will find another in bad shape for dissection purposes to learn what's in it and we can enjoy the "Erik teardown experience." The lights are very cool.

Now that you have one, you should look into having someone make a mold from it, so you could sell castings. Let folks finish it themselves if they want one.

rkan2 - that is why you make a mold and don’t paint it or finish it. You just sell the raw casting, and let folks finish it and paint it themselves.

It's real but doesn't work.

It's funny you mention the collection of old gas pumps. Have you taken the Tesla Fremont factory tour? They have old gas pumps leading up to a Supercharger like the one you have. I couldn't take a picture because they are inside the factory and no pictures are allowed but sure max cool factor.

Not just that, you need a converder to create 400 ish volt DC, a normal line is AC. You can probably fake something, but it probably won't go above 20 ish kW at home.

That's only the supercharger stall. The supercharger (3 phase AC to DC converter among other things) cabinet is a lot more expensive and is not there.

You can probably make it a functional charger by wiring a regular charger cable throw it... The only drawback is that it will not be a fast charging unit, but simply look cool in your garage and function as a regular outlet charger...

Yeah the title says real supercharger but then he said it's a dummy cable and it doesn't actually work at the end of the video. If it is a real actual working unit he should hire a electrician. If not what's the point of buying it.

The supercharger you are seeing does not have the power conversion supply equipment in it. What you see is just a cable holder and interface for the car. The power transformers are in those big boxes that are located behind the fencing at the supercharger locations. The supercharger you see does not really do anything to provide the actual charging. The big boxes take the ac from the utility and convert it to the dc 400v or whatever at high amperage levels. That kind of equipment could not possibly fit into these things you see at each car location even if they wanted it to. The supercharger probably also commands the transformer power boxes when a charge is initiated etc.

Ari P I know all this hints why I said “have some electrical work done” even if they made it function without as much power as the real ones. It would still be more awesome than just having a $3200 thing of plastic and lights.

There is no having anything done. You need a whole another piece of equipment which is a large transformer box as big as a phone booth which probably costs much more than the supercharger you see. The transformer box also would weight much more.

Erik, now you just need to figure out how to actually rapid charge your cars at 100kW+ .....

The power comes from the big transformer boxes that are behind the fencing. What you see as the supercharger is just a connection box/display and a car interface maybe that commands the power unit when a charge is initiated.

They actually use those superchargers to quickly set up a provisional replacement for when they are servicing or upgrading a supercharger station
