That’s wild that gift cards were used here. I have a story where I had to resort to gift cards on a transaction because the deal was last minute on a Saturday night and I couldn’t accept loss on the deal, so I can relate to this guy’s experience
This story warms my heart as a fellow e39 wagon lover. I’d love to tell the story of mine, insurance fraud, 1/11 made world wide, stars aligned with a unique vin that happened to mean a lot to me.

@@bren.nan_ looked for the car for 3 years, only thing not the spec I wanted was beige interior. Drove from missouri to dc area to get it after winning it at copart auction. After getting it and seeing it in person it was vandalized more than I expected. Someone took a drill and drilled holes in all the panels, and carved “f you” in the hood. Ball bat to all the a and d pillars shattering the rear glass and cracking the windshield. Got it home through some really bad weather, heat was out in my truck so I slept in the car at a rest area. Trans was bad but engine ran great and heat worked. Turns out trans was bad, there was a estimate from the local bmw dealer for an $8k trans job, 3 days later the vandalism happens. Police report died stated owner as prime suspect because using a drill is not common or something a gf would do which was his story. Turns out they were right, guy went to jail. Last rod bit is my family has a tradition of everyone having cool cars but they only count for the family club if it’s the year you were born. I’m 88 and I don’t care for anything from that year. I run the vin in this wagon, find out the production run and it’s run #88. I didn’t plan that when I was looking it just happened to be that. So it’s super special to me now, in the middle of doing a manual swap since trans was bad already, and a good friend of mine is teaching me how to do body work. I think I have pics on my ig if I do it’s @that_e39guy

I had a similar situation. Spent 5 hours negotiating a car deal and at the end of the deal the guy was like you just got to sign this piece of paper saying that you didn't see this on a consignment website. I did see the car out of the car on the consignment website that he mentioned.

I bought my Cosmo Swartz Metallic with black comfort interior 99 540ia wagon in 2017 with only 85k kms, was my daily for a few years. Plus now I've got a 2nd E39 which is an 03 530ia M-sport to be my daily. E39s are incredibly well built and I'll for sure keep my 99 540 wagon as a forever car
Congrats on your son! And bummer about the accident. The exact same stop sign on ramp fender bender got me too. Other driver got a whole new exhaust out of it:)
STILL the best short movies ever made with cars. Every time that song comes on the radio, I'm looking for a green light and a jump
I vividly remember "The Hire" series of short BMW films with Clive Owens as "The Driver". They were all done with different directors, like Guy Ritchie, Ang Lee, and John Frankenheimer. Excellent films, and I thought they all had a "Ronin/Transporter-style" vibe to them. Beautiful BMW. Great, well presented story!

You let a car go for a broken headlight? A car guy would never allow that to happen to a car you love.
@sean2137

probably what he meant is that the whole front end was messed up, but even just the headlights would be enough damage to total it. not uncommon at all with older luxury cars, or even some newer ones for that matter with the crazy matrix LEDs that are several thousand per assembly
This is an insane story as I'm currently daily-ing a 1999 BMW 528i Touring, with the factory 5 speed. It's a wonderful vehicle and I could not be happier. Any of the cars i've bought and flipped just simply do not stand up to the BMW quality of that era, and none of them look quite as executive as these.

Awesome story! My dream car other than an F40 is an E39 M5 touring. I was close to getting a "clone" 540 6spd M parts front and back in AZ a few months back at auction.
I love my e39. What a crazy story
He is the kinda guy who thinks sellers wait around for weeks for him, when in fact they can sell it quicker and with less nagging questions
An E39 wagon was my first car. It got rear-ended by an inattentive driver and totaled. I had no idea how hard it would be to find another one in decent condition. I'm still on the hunt for another one. I don't know what it is about these cars, so I'm glad to see there's someone else that's as crazy as I am about these wagons!
I have a ‘12 Camry SE Limited Edition. I love that car. Not because it’s fast, spirited for enthusiast tastes, or respected in car culture. I did my first true cross country trip in it (Atlanta to San Diego) and ended up on a west coast adventure, all the way to Seattle back down to Vegas, SLC, Denver eventually coming back south as I headed east home to Atlanta. Total was around 10,000 miles on that trip in a month. I lo e it because of the memories, the trust knowing I never planned this trip, just packed and headed west one day not even a slight thought I’d be nearly 2,700 miles away from home at the furthest (in Seattle) and the possibility of something failing stranding me so far from home. It’s nearly at 210,000 now and I’d go turn the key after posting this and drive to Seattle again, knowing I’ll make it. It’s a Camry. Yes, it’s the picture next to the definition of “car” in the dictionary. But it has a loyalty like it’s my mom… after I do something stupid she said was stupid, she’ll still be there. I know that Camry will start every time it’s told to.
I legit had someone sell a car out from me as I was about 30 minutes out after hitting up a junkyard for parts. And we had setup that I was coming to get parts off this car. Had he told me he sold it the day before, I wouldn't have gone to the junkyard and spent 200 in parts. Or if he had told me he wanted to sell the whole car, I would have bought the car. It was a rare 1987 Buick Century 3.8L 440T4. I needed interior pieces for my 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.8 440T4. Guy only wanted like 300. Communicated like shit.
You're over thinking it Mate. Wagons are just the best. Everyone just pretends to like other types of cars. But deep down they know that they're lying. Caveman Wagon Love.

I lost my Fiat 500 Sport the same way! Trying to merge into a highway in a construction zone. The acceleration lane was non-existent. You had to twist around and look behind you and peer through a tiny gap in the orange barrels. A Navigator had wimped out, after the stop sign, at the edge of the highway. I didn't see since I was twisted around in the seat. I saw my spot and floored it. As I straightened out, I had enough time to hit the brakes and begin to turn away before I impacted. She had a slight bump. I bent the frame. So sorry, man
Those short films were great. Enjoyed them but they also had a Z3 giveaway when those came out. It was probably because my father owned a 5 series at the time and they mailed the DVDs to us.

I can't stand anyone who breaks their word on a deal. It has happened to me and if their life depended on my help they would just die. That is how I feel about it and don't care what anyone has to say about it. Your word is the most valuable thing you own and if you break it you are just shit!!!! I have been offered much better money and or trades on things I have sold and once my word is given nothing can get me to break it and I never have and could have made much but my word is worth more than money. Keep you word folks.
