I Bought a New (old) Boat
I made it to California and bought a new (old) sailboat. Stephanie and I go to San Diego to check out a 1965 Cheoy Lee Robb 35. Spoiler alert: We bought the boat. I will give you a tour and tell you about the boat searching process. Btw, yes, I know there is a mistake / typo in the video: Isle of Wight, not Island.

That's certainly a good old Perkins engine, I worked at the Perkins factory in 1970-71 (UK) at that time the engine of the day was the 4108 the one just after yours though virtually the same. The engine was shipped to the US and used in Massy Ferguson tractors. It was used by Sir Francis Chichester’s round-the-world yacht Gipsy Moth III. .30,000 were built at the Peterborough (UK) factory in 1970

I have a Perkins 4108 made in 1979. Still runs like a charm with the odd oil leak now and then

I owned a Westsail 32 many years ago that had a Perkins 4108 engine. Never any problems.

I agree!
I bought a sailboat a couple of months ago, 1949 "van der Meer", never sailed in my life, still dont know how to (only by looking YT videos), but I can't be happier
When I first started just "window shopping" for my first sailboat, I was totally smitten with a '70s Cheoy Lee 42' Luders-designed clipper-rigged ketch rather similar to yours. Of course it was absolutely the WRONG boat for me, but I totally get it. Hell, if you weren't three time zones away, I might pitch in to help refinish that teak. By now you've likely learned that many owners just strip that teak decking if it's too far gone, but yours still looks salvageable, and you might get away with a proper recaulking. Carry on!
Beautiful boat Josh. I also have a fiberglass hull with teak decks and lots of wood trim except it is a 38' trawler. I've been having a lot of luck refinishing with three coats of West system epoxy with 207 UV hardener, followed by three coats of Epiphanes varnish. I apply the three coats of epoxy back-to-back without sanding, when the epoxy is tacky. The end result looks like 12 coats of varnish and so far is holding up very well in sunny Marina del Rey. Good luck with her. I am the author of myself!
Wow Josh! Congratulations on the new boat and YOUR “new chapter”. That deck is gonna be a project. We look forward to seeing your progress and await the next videos of the work you will have done.
Congratulations Josh, she is a beauty. I can't wait to watch your progress on her and then your adventures that she leads you on. Roger
I’m so glad to see you back and with a “great” boat!
You got a boat! Thank goodness. I can hardly wait for what is to come.
Congrats! She’s amazing. I just purchased an older Island Packet, so I’ll be staying in touch.
No giving up hope here. All your videos, including the motorbike ones are honest intentions of transfer of knowledge and joy. Appreciate it. Having said this, great to see you doing back to sailing! It is a beautiful sailboat which might give a lot of us on this side of the channel ideas! Thank you.
Just found your video and look forward to your videos as you clean and restore your new (old) boat!
Show, beautiful sailboat ... I love the classics. "the things that give us the most satisfaction are always the most difficult to conquer". I'm with you in this new adventure :)))
Congratulations with your newest asset! Cant wait to see you make her shine again. Beautiful boat. Wood sounds great
Great boat. I owned a 1965 Cheoy Lee Lyon, SOMA, in Santa Barbara for many years. Wood hull and tiller. Loved cruising the Channel Islands aboard her but she took over my life maintaining her in pristine condition. Enjoy this very special classic boat!
That's so cool. After you get All the wood work done it's so gratifying to see a job well done.
Looking forward to seeing the new adventures!
Congrats on the purchase! We did a similar thing last year when we sold our 1982 C&C 34 that we owned for 10 years and purchased our 1979 Hans Christian 43T. I am sure you will love owning a classic as much as we do!
"How's the peeping Tommy? How's the peeping...." Have that movie, and you are right, it's a beautiful boat. 👍
Congratulations on the new boat! Look forward to West coast adventures!!
Absolutely love it!!!! Well done! Can’t wait to see how you maintain it. Right up my alley. Also I was in the Isle of Wight recently. I should have sent you a picture. 👍👍👍
I love all the teak. Your new boat is a diamond in the rough. You’ll have her standing tall soon. Congratulations.
Great Josh. Well done. One more classic boat to the water again.
Great boat. My father owned a Choy Lee Frisco Flyer in Oakland in the early 70's. I loved that boat but was not in a position to buy it when he was ready to sell. I've had several sailboats over the years and when we sold the last one we got a 1968 Grand Banks 32 woodie so I know what you mean about wooden boats, you gotta love 'em and if you do you'll be busy for life.
Congratulations josh on the new boat. Be sure to post vid on the progress and restoration of the new vessel. Cant wait to see the final product.
Gorgeous boat. Congratulations. May it bring you safely across the ocean wherever the wind may take you.
Man that boat's going to be a beauty when the wood is done. Nice interior too, surprisingly bright. Have at it, Captain!
This is great. Seeing as you left us hanging. Just can't imagine not having your channel to follow.
I think you got yourself a great boat. I love the classic look and will look forward to seeing her brought back to her glory days! Congratulations and as you know, you will just love her more as she shines!
Best of luck with the "new" boat. She is a beauty with classy lines. Look forward to see the result of your hard work in cleaning her up, and the big job of restoring the deck.
I like it! Thanks for posting another great video! Looking forward to the DIYs.
That's cool--so much work but it'll be beautiful when it's done. Enjoy!
Josh, I'm so excited for you, Congratulations on your purchase! I loved the whole video, Stephanie and you make an fantastic couple... things really seem to be going your way!! I smiled when you referred to the sailboat in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" as I too marvelled at that boat, it somehow reminded of a time when sailboats had this unique style and not these cookie cutter fiberglass boats of today! I'm so looking forward to your upcoming videos of repairing her to her former glory and taking her on the water! Not sure why some would bail and unsubscribe, their loss...your content and keen taste for music makes your videos always a pleasure to watch, learn and enjoy!

😻 beautiful! And the wood looks pretty good too! Nice find m8 👍👍 definitely a timeless treasure you have!
Congratulations Josh! Now you have your work cut out for you! Definitely lots of wood work, but I hope to see you sailing soon!
What an awesome boat. It will be a thing of beauty when you are done with it.
Josh I haven’t watched your channel in a while and then this popped up. Beautiful boat. Congratulations!!!
The best of two technology: the easier maintenance of a fiberglass hull and the look and tne warmt of a wood deck . Genius ! Congratulation, geat buy !
She's a beautiful classic! It was super nice to meet you in San Diego. Your so right about keeping these old classics alive, everyone always stops to see theses beauties!

Her lines are fantastic. What an adventure!
Congratulations on your new boat and hello fellow Missourian. I'm from St. Louis. I was interested in learning how to sail when I came across your videos. They were very informative by the way. I'll be waiting for future content from you.

Congratulations on the new boat.
Geeat vids..got me through the winter months..sailbros have done wonders on the cheoy lee they rehabbed.i would like to see more on the reefing system keep up the good work
Great to find someone willing to restore a classic wood boat. My hubby & I have owned 2 wood boats ( 2nd one was a 34' Franz Maas yawl - teak hull, teak decks, mahogany cabin). Then (for more self punishment) we got a Swedish Ohlson 41 (steel hull, teak cockpit, mahogany cabin & interiors). We believe that traditional oil based, quality varnishes are best for the wood. even teak; get 6 coats on & then make or buy a awning cover to keep the UV sun off. Re-coat with 1 or 2 coats every 6 months. For our solid teak cockpit seats, we use Semco - it's a type of oil - it worked really well for the year we spent in Mex & So Cal. I think it would be hard to use on your decks because you are not supposed to get it on the caulking. Generally teak decks should be kept clean but just with water, many cleaners are too harsh & erode the softer grain of the wood. Tropical sun ruins the teak decks on lots of FG boats, so awning are a must! We totally re-caulked the decks on our Maas yawl; it's a real hard job removing the old caulking. Our decks leaked like a shower! Good luck
After all these years I unsubscribed you yesterday since you no longer had a boat. Then I get notified of this episode this morning. Literally a life line thrown at me.
Super excited about your new sailing adventure.
I have been in love with the Choy Lee since I was a child, not even certain where the love and fascination arose from.

I couldn't believe it when I saw those 'belaying pins' as in 'belay that order' great boat - Choi Lee is one of the best trawlers out there so I have got to believe their sail boats are the same.
They are very good boats. Nice. Can't wait to see you bring her back to life.
Very cool vintage boat! Looking forward future updates.
Once that woodwork is refreshed that boat is going to be BE-A-UTIFUL!
Nice boat!! Great quote at the end. You can start a new chapter in your life, anytime you choose. I am currently refitting an Oday 25 I purchase last year. I have lots of boat projects and work, but it will be worth it in the near future. Glad you are continuing your sailboat adventures :)
Growing up on Cape Cod, I am partial to old Catboats, ( gaff rigging ), with my first being a beetlecat with cotton sails .The amount of work every year, calking the hull, filling, priming, sanding, then painting. Then topside where deck is canvas and alllll is wood. Work work work. You got a beauty. My father would never allow our boats to fall in disrepair. Captain he was. Fair winds sir. No engines on my boats, just centerboards , rudders and tillers.
Beautiful Cheoy Lee. I am going today to look at at a '70 Cheoy Lee Clipper 42. We wish we had you here to look with us. Your vids are outstanding. We have learned much from you. Thank you.

Wawww that's great boat... Congratz Josh... I can't wait to see your next video..
YES!!! He is back, my favorite sailing KZreadr! 🎉🎺
Thank you for the videos. I've just recently started getting excited about buying a sailboat, mainly to live on 3 to 4 days a week and slowly learn how to sail. I appreciate the detailed explanations and the time you take with each video. I'll keep on watching and learning. Cheers.

Congratulations, and fair winds with your new boat.
Great Video Josh. Thanks. Yes, Isle of Wight, origin of the America's Cup.
Welcome to the Cheoy Lee Club Josh.
There's nothing like wood to add warmth and a natural touch . I love all things that have a bit of age , style and craftsmanship to them. I also love that often times things built in pervious generations were made to last, and not to use and throw away.
Congratulations on your new boat!!! I’m looking for the right Cheoy Lee 41 Offshore (Ray Richards design). I like your comparison with a classic car. Beautiful lines. Classic. Bless her and all who sail on her :-). Wishing fair winds and thanks for the video :-) :-) :-)
Dude, great find! Teak decks scare me but you seem handy and willing to put in the sweat. Looking to see more
Reminds me of Dad's old yacht, an Abeking and Rasmussen 10 meter. He sold it in '86. I always wondered what happened to it and did a google search on it a couple of years ago. To my surprise, there it was, fully restored and it was for sale. I live a long way from the closest mooring these days but I decided to give the owner a call and have a chat. I was on the 'phone to him for over an hour. He'd done the restoration as soon as he bought it and had been living aboard for nearly 30 years and had kept the boat in immaculate condition. Despite the geographical challenge (3hr. round trip), I still wonder if I made a mistake in not writing a check. I hope that you can achieve what that fellow did and I hope you can make his son envious too, in another 30 years.
Josh, what nice project. Congratulations.
Nice, a dream coming true. ¡Buén viaje!
I'm jealous.. These Choy Lees shine up gorgeously
I love the look of wooden topsides and cabin interiors, but loath the amount of work involved. I hope this vessels carries you safely during the next leg of your journey.
awesome! congrats on the new home
Going to be a beauty!
What a pretty boat. Perfect SoCal weekender. I like Stephanie's Range Rover Sport Autobiography too. Great choice.
Haha Crazy man, that's a mountain of work! keep at it! Chip away!
Your channel popped up in my feed and it brings back memories: I owned a Cheoy Lee Clipper 33 when I was in the Navy. I did a lot of sailing in San Diego and San Francisco. There is a 1965 Lion 35 for sale on Marketplace here in Florida!
I was just thinking Josh post is going to get another sailboat ⛵️ man I’m proud for you 👍. I love the old boats but I’m still older then your new boat .Out Teak’s looking better already, keep us updated 🤗
Nice, love the up turning stern.
Yeah Josh sailing bids are back !right on bro
I cannot guess how much money or effort it will take to properly restore and preserve this boat, but if I could afford to own a boat I believe I would enjoy greatly to own such a boat as this one you have. I wish you every success with it.
I like it Josh. Nice purchase.
just bumped into your channel/video. I like your attitude and attention to detail. I subscribed. I think you have a real winner in this boat only because You are going to put real effort into her. thx for the time you spent putting this video together. looking forward to a beautiful and eye popping refit, :o) :o)
