My brother played bassoon from 6th to 9th grade, and I have to agree some 30 (how has it been that long?) years later.

Instrument quality serves a function and reason within a market. Thank you for bringing it up. My husband has been wanting a hammered dulcimer for a few years now, but life has kept getting in the way. This is a good reminder that we don't need to go all out on an expensive instrument, especially if he's going to be a beginner on it.

Totally! And yes as long as the dulcimer holds tuning well, you can find some pretty sweet deals on Craigslist. One persons trash is another's treasure!

I was pleasantly surprised by this video. I am a bassoonist who is not a fan of Lintons, but now that I see that it’s mostly just the 5000 series ones that get the bad rep. This one sounds really good for what it is, and gets the job that you need done! It’s a perfect instrument for a multi-instrumentalist, and a very good option for students to get! Thanks for the informative video!

As long as an instrument is constructed properly from suitable materials then they should all produce an adequate sound. Once you go past semi-pro instruments in the $1.5-4k mark, you're really getting diminishing returns. Best if you can find a less expensive alternative that has a character to its sound that you like.

I appreciate your bringing up the gatekeeping factor of needing a really expensive instrument to be considered a "real musician" or whatever. 🙄 Isn't music supposed to be fun? So just find a decent enough instrument in your price range and have at it! I think of it a lot like buying the fanciest ingredients for food. Sure, maybe my food would taste better if I bought top of the line organic whatever, but getting what's available from the grocery store and giving it some TLC sure does make a tasty meal without breaking the bank! I'm not trying to impress anyone. Just trying to do the things that bring me joy. Thanks for being an inspiration, Luke!!!

Well, that was a surprise! Bassoon is/was my main instrument, my money maker. Flute was always my first love, so as I've gotten older, I devote more time to flute.

A friend in the first music school I went to got his Heckel bassoon in 1972. Because of demand, it had been back-ordered for years, and I believe it cost $6,000, which I thought was outrageous. I forget what brand his first bassoon was but it was wood and looked very nice, but the huge difference in the Heckel was that it played perfectly in tune. Anyway, you play this cheap bassoon very nicely, and quite well in tune.

6,000 is nothing for a bassoon. You'd be lucky to find a heckel for 50,000 today.

@@somebody9033 That's how much prices have gone up. The same Haynes or Powell flute which cost $1,000 in 1972 now costs over $13,000. I understand though, with bassoons, it's a supply and demand thing, bassoons being so rare, with the best ones being even rarer. Something different happened with flutes though, the best ones have a lot of competition, which started in about the mid-1970s. There are a over a dozen good brands of flute, whereas there used to be only two top ones, maybe three or four, if you include Hammig or Lot, and the irony is, flute is much more about headjoint than the flute body itself. When Lafin started making great headjoints about 25 years ago, flutists from around the world flocked to get one, even at their high price, no matter what stupid flute they had. Now flute headjoint makers have gotten better though. So of the wind players, bassoonists are the unluckiest in terms of the price that must be paid to get a really good instrument, but even so, many top string players pay more than $50,000 for a bow. So, there's that.

This was really fun. I am a clarinet player but in college I played bassoon for kicks in the concert band after falling in love with it during woodwind methods. Unfortunately the school let me use the really good professional Fox that they owned in attempts to persuade me to switch instruments. They did not have a bassoonist in the wind ensemble at the time. So I am spoiled buy having learned on a pro instrument. It is maybe 20 years later and I really want to pick up the bassoon again but am having a dickens of a time finding something that I am comfy with in my price range.

What a cool adventure to go on. Instruments have such great tales to tell, from the musicians who have used them to the venues they have been used in. I'd like to think their character influences how we play them. Now it's your turn to add to this bassoon's history.

Totally! I feel this as well. I love hearing stories about people's instruments and what crazy histories they have.

I got my Selmer Bundy Bassoon for $300 off Ebay back in 2013. It's still serving me well to this day, despite being a bit of a trash instrument. My experience with all my instruments is that as along as you have a good setup and are a good enough player, you can make most instruments work. XD

Love it! Also a great bocal and great reed can make all the difference in making a cheap instrument sound good.

This is a great video keep up the good work!

Never played one, but have molded Selmer/Bundy instruments in a injection molding factory, including the bassoon. They are actually pretty touchy to mold. If the machine is not adjusted right, you will get crazy flow lines in the plastic. Oboe was similar, but tended to get voids if injected too fast. My specialty was buffing the seam out of clarinet bells.

A good friend at Jr and High school played the bassoon. Always liked the sound of that and end the English Horn... even the oboe. They have a very unique sound.

Pretty cool! Tone and response? Good as far as my ears can tell. The intonation is dubious, but I wonder if the keywork that was “updated” post-market wasn’t done perfectly. Cool video!

I love the sound of the bassoon! We had records when I was a kid that had stories such as Little Red Riding Hood accompanied by symphony music. Can’t hear a bassoon without thinking of those fairy tales set to music.

My first instrument was a Linton 5000 and it definitely was up to the stereotype. I personally won't be looking on ebay for my professional instrument, but its good to see that there can be some good instruments for cheap!

The bassoon is one of those instruments that if you but a cheap one it will sound like the dead lights from it (hurdy hurry as the best example)

I have no idea about instruments and youtube video making...but from the ultimate laymen like me... Thank you! This was fun to watch and educational. What you give is unique and appreciated!!!!!

I've been considering getting a bassoon again on and off over the past few years. You actually uploaded this video the same year I was officially without a bassoon. I have a tumultuous relationship with the bassoon and my experience with band in school. Ultimately, my district opened up a new high school that i ended up attending and I told the new directors that i refused to do marching band. I was given the ultimatum of either quitting band altogether or staying in both concert band and marching band. I chose to say bye to it all. I don't regret my decision, but i've slowly begun to miss the bassoon over the years. It used to be such a big part of who I was. I've always tried to distance myself from certain aspects of music and the bassoon because of how stressed competition made me. The end of your video, hearing your mash up of Zelda and Sonic - the bassoon just sounded so pretty with those high notes and i can remember flipping through the scales like that and how nice it was. I think youve convinced me to go for it. I dont know - The bassoon has always been extremely emotional for me - almost like a toxic relationship? Hearing it being played for fun just made me sappy i guess. I appreciate the info you've provided here and will keep it in mind when making a purchase (if i end up doing so). And thank you for the song at the end. I dont know why, but that made me feel warm.

I played a bundy alto sax for years. Always loved it.

Having been playing a Linton bassoon ever since I picked up the instrument, I have to agree about the tuning. After doing some research, I found some alternate note fingerings to stabilize the tone. Overall it doesn't really matter what bassoon you choose, it's the player that makes the instrument sound best.

Playing a bassoon or oboe sounds so hard to do. props to you bro

I'm hearing issues with the instrument, but what I'm thinking is 1) if it's wood, make sure to oil it. 2) I think a couple of the pads are leaking air. It could be a slightly bent key.

0:36 My exact vision with recorders. I used to think you could only get good recorders with prices over 200 euros, but really, cheaper recorders are fine too, you don’t always need the best of the best.

Oh okay I hear Linton and immediately thought of the scary student plastic ones. The wooden ones are like you said the "bundy" of Bassoons not bad but not good.

I totally agree, you dont need the perfect instrument, the only instrument in your collection that should be as close as you can get to perfect is your main instrument, if you have one.

I played a rental Linton in High School. Just bought the identical one, a black composite Linton on Ebay. It was brand new but from tracing the serial number it was probably made in the same batch as my high school rental. I think it sounds great! My teacher, the principal bassoonist for LPO has put the bocal from his gazillion $ Henkel into my Linton - when he plays it the sound is wonderful!!! So I know the potential to sound great is there. Also, living in New Orleans, the humidity really affects wooden instruments, so the composite makes sense. Is the one you're playing wooden?? It looks great! It has the lump in the top section - something mine lacks.

Very interesting! I think that's the case for a lot of old "student" instruments. They can actually sound pretty dang good when they are fully fixed with the right setup. Glad to hear yours is working well!

Functional bassoon for that price is very lucky. I bought what I and the seller thought was a model IV FOX for $1,500 which is a bargain, but it in rreality it was a Fox Model 1 tenor joint with a model 41 body. It plays well, so the seller gave back $300 and I accepted it and play it as my picnic instrument saving my Heckel from outdoor damage. Get a Heckel bocal and see if improves sound and intonation.

You sound great congratulations! Not sure if anyone else has said this, but please try to get a replacement boot cap though if you haven’t already. I worry that the u-tube(yes that’s the real name lol) on the boot joint might get dented and otherwise damaged without it. Keep enjoying your bassoon! It makes me so sad that so many bassoons are so expensive. What I don’t understand is why other instrument makers like yamaha make affordable student instruments but not the bassoon. Congratulations again! So happy I found this video.

I keep saying "if you build it they will come" as far as a market goes...but sadly there's still not enough people in the right places to actually follow through. I'll keep advocating though!

@@InstrumentManiac I suspect that the biggest drawback to trying to make a reasonably affordable bassoon is the bocal. There's no way to make that 'simple, cheap, and good' - even though it doesn't appear that complicated. That and unlike most instruments, the pieces have to be made to sandwich together properly. That, combined with the low numbers of people willing to play "the big kazoo" as well as the ongoing expense of the reeds (I recommend plastic reeds for someone starting out - they aren't the best, but they'll last), makes it not wonderful. keep in mind that oboe has the same issue with no really inexpensive options

I play on a wooden Jupiter clarinet, it’s my first wooden clarinet I bought on my own, it’s not a buffet R13 but I sound a lot better than the r13s in my community band, I have a warm dark tone and it cost half the money of brand new r 13 and has an extra eflat key. It’s made from China but hey it works for me and it sounds amazing. So yeah you don’t need a top brand name instrument to play amazing, also I started on a selmers 300 clarinet and loved it.

It is true that Linton has gotten a bad reputation in the past. I have a plastic Linton bassoon which I use for outdoor concerts. However, with decent reeds and an excellent bocal the instrument plays pretty well.

You are my favorite musician ever!! Also, is there a major sound difference between a wooden bassoon and a plastic one?

Aw thanks EZ! Unfortunately there is a pretty large difference. Cheaper plastic instruments can't resonate the same way as wood does and it often ends up sounding muffled or "plastic-y". But if that's all you have access to it's a good way to practice until finding a cheaper wooden one some day 😊

I enjoyed your bassoon journey! I also bought a bass clarinet off eBay and it is probably not the best but is decent and does the job as well! Only thing is it's not a low c so I can't hit high notes but it's a decent student model! You can find some good stuff on ebay! Enjoyed watching this!

I’d love to play the bassoon! My school band program has it but alas has no reeds due to the cost. Currently playing a clarinet, which I enjoy, but I’d definitely love the bassoon. Edit: It’s me from the future! I bought bassoon reeds and a case and they should arrive this week.

Intonation is always tricky. I keep looking for a Holton Farkas double horn, but that’s going to run $4k to $6k. Should have never sold mine after college.

Always been my dream to learn such an instrument. My sisters as children were given from school clarinets to learn. They just learned thee very very basics and hardly touched them. When I asked my parents: No! only girls play those. For a ten year old I was devasted. I knew I could learn them; appreciate an instrument. Such a beautiful sound the Bassoon makes.

If you were to add to the arrangement a treble recorder part, tightly composed, complex and played deftly and quickly, you would have something approaching a classic piece by prog-folk band, Gryphon.

wow so much to say. The first time you played it I was still a bit skeptical as the tone was very bad (no offense). the second time however the tone was solid and I was delightfully surprised how well this cheap bassoon plays with some work. As a bassoonist I would recommend getting a lock so the wing and long joint don't separate. A boot cap would also be good but it seems the seat strap remedy that came with the bassoon works just fine. Truly amazing on your part. I just want to say that buying a bassoon on ebay is not a good Idea for new players as It can be the source for a lot of frustration down the road and put a cap on how well you can play, which is never good. For some short solos by a great musician though very smooth and very good tone.

It's like the Jupiter student flutes. They have multiple grades even within that existing category and you can get some fairly inexpensive Jupiter brand flutes that sound quite lovely. Are they as nice as a $8-15k flute? No, they're not, but they're still lovely in their own right. My sister just picked one up to use until she gets around to getting her much nicer flute repadded and it has a fantastic mellow quality to the sound, which makes it very enjoyable to listen to. It's less bright compared to her other flute which is sterling and open-hole, which means it wouldn't be ideal for a first flute or a solo, but that's perfectly fine if all you really want it for is to practice with so you can maintain your embouchure. Apparently that slightly darker, more mellow sound is indicative of Jupiter flutes, which I really don't think is such a bad thing.

Nice bassoon! A cheap bassoon is not necessarily bad. It will never be a Heckel, how could it, but it is still nice instrument, has a really good price / value ratio, and you could certainly play the Mozart concerto on it. Most issues could probably be fixed by an overhaul. I got my Schreiber for 1500 Euro (~1800 USD) + 1000 CHF (~1100 USD) full overhaul. Also got a new bocal, which really wasn't necessary, but I saw a copper bocal and couldn't resist. Usually they are silver, some gold plated, but copper, all bassoonists I showed it to, were surprised and haven't seen one before. I'm happy with the bassoon and will never sell it, even if I buy that dream Heckel one day :)

It's honestly rolling a dice. Your best bet is to keep an eye on ebay for a cheaper wooden one from a seller that has good ratings. That was my strategy for this one.

I bought one and it need new pad when I bought it. But I just need a different vocal for it.

I'm from Italy and I'm a Bassoonist, I've never heard about Linton. I think it is important to make the bassoon known and let everyone have the opportunity to try it and study it without having to spend 1000€

It could stand to go in for a checkup to get the keys aligned and repadded as necessary and to service it, but overall it seems like a perfectly fine bassoon. Maybe not quite as loud as you might prefer for a concert instrument, but that's really hard to tell from a video like this and it is also not nearly so important for your needs. It makes nice doot doot noises so you're good.

That's so funny how the bassoon came with pictures of a crazy instrument guy. Remind you of anyone you know?

Similar experience with a Chinese made bassoon whose scale was "distempered". However the real reason I clicked is the muscle shirt and jeans. THAT was worth it.

Chines maple wood basson on UK ebay rated by seller teacher (not me!) as good as much more costly french instrument. The chinese produce what buyers are prepared to pay for.

I personally don’t think Bundy is crap because my trombone is a Bundy, with really decent tone and a very big difference in projection compared to my school’s Yamaha trombone
