    Have the original Mavic Mini with no tracking features. Best way to film myself with that one is to download a 3rd party app that supports waypoints and then simply fly from A to B and try to get yourself in the shot. Works better than you might think if you only need a few seconds of drone shots.

    How to manage the controller on you while you ride is the real trick to this it seems. As an alternative to strapping it on your chest, I've seen some youtube users set up the drone in the air to active track and then take off the joysticks and place the controller in a backpack for a short amount of time to ride a segment (and then re-engage the joysticks and land the drone after a short clip). The Skydio 2+ drone with a beacon seems to be more set up for following sports, but that option is over twice the cost of your setup.

    I bought a drone a couple of years ago to use for the same reason. In fact it's the same drone but older. I drag it out every now and then to have a practice, then lose confidence and pack it away again. I even have a particular track I want to film my mates and I on. The tricky thing is keeping it out of the trees. I'm keen to see how you go Neil. I might be tempted to give mine a proper go.

    And that's why I stopped carrying one around when I was (moto) enduro riding. It was a pain to ride some interesting terrain and worry about the drone ending up in a river or someone's property or hung up on a tree. Also, just stopping a ride and unpacking, starting the drone, then stopping it was such a pain in the butt, that I stopped using it completely.... Do check local legislation, most places require you to fly VLOS (maintaining physical sight of the drone at all times). I feel flying autonomously while riding a bike does not fulfill this requirement. There might be some exceptions if you have an assistant watching the drone. But definitely check local rules, its a legal jungle out there right now. Or fly illegally, right now many use cases are not legally possible in some jurisdictions. Like FPV flying. But flying outside the law is a bit risky as a content creator that's posting the evidence on KZread...

    @@nigelrandtoul8646 in the UK? I wouldn't know. In EU currently you need to register as a drone operator (for a small fee), and that is all that is required for the smaller drones. Only ones without any camera are exempt. At least until 2024. In the US its a little different, you don't need to register for sub-250g drones, unless you are using it for business (having a KZread channel counts as business). If you're using it for business, then you need to register and do part 107 exam. You have to figure out the rules in the country you are flying in, its very possible UK has more free rules.

  • @better.better

    @better.better

    Жыл бұрын

    the only thing better than the drone would be to have a drone with a 360 camera on it so you don't worry about where it steers itself too much because you can always reframe the video afterwards to show something else that's in the 360 shot. I've long been a fan of the 360 camera concept. they're getting better at it but they still haven't perfected the parallax distortion at the seam. for something like a drone shot though, if you're shooting a one-off thing like a race, it's not like you can do another take, so being able to pick anything you want to see in the 360 frame and punch in on it seems like a gold mine to me. I think at that size a 360 camera is still pretty limited in its ability to be able to maintain quality when you punch in, but those little drones are great for a lot of the adventure trips you do where you can't necessarily take a camera crew everywhere. even if you disregard the ability to film for GMBN, you could probably use it to help scout a route during a cross country adventure eventually when I do the solo touring trip that I want to do, that little drone would be one of the cameras I would take, I would probably also want a 360 camera of some sort either the insta360 or a GoPro max

  • @arcrides6841

    @arcrides6841

    Жыл бұрын

    @@better.better I have owned both the GoPro Max and the insta360. The GoPro does a far better job at stitching at the seam but they both have very noticeable distortion. The image doesn't look natural. By the way the GoPro has terrible Windows software so I ended up sticking with the insta360. But even so I rarely use it and I'm thinking of selling it. Mainly because of the image not looking anything like that of a regular camera. It's just the nature of 360 cameras. I wouldn't want one on a drone to be honest. It would make the footage look cheap compared to a regular camera. I would rather have multiple regular cameras on a drone for the purposes of capturing more action.

    I use the same mini and for the controller I use a chest-pack that I found on amazon (used for hand guns apparently) It fits tight and does not get in the way but gives you access to the controller quickly. I also take the sticks off so it slides into the pack easily. I have used it on the gravel bike as well but have to wear it pretty high up to avoid knee strikes. It will actually fit both drone and controller in it without the phone.

I just wanted it to follow me for one lap around a Ice lake couldn't do it. Once they get 100% reliable, chuck it in the air and have it follow and 1.5hr flight time maybe other wise meh rather get on with riding. It's not to say I'm not interested in more drone content I'm esp how it does in the woods.

    Drones are cool. This sends a bad message though. As by law the drone needs operator ID on it. As its being used for commercial use you need a drone license and insurance. Hands need to be on the controllers at all times and VLOS maintained. Looks like you might be on NT land which has no TOAL policy. Some might say sod at all that but as a big professional company you have a responsibility to adhere to all laws and rules. Theres enough restrictive legislation for drone use as it is without it being made worse by bad use examples like this and from a big professional company too.

Is he/drone have commercial Insurance. Is the drone registered and marked with operator ID. Does he have written permission from NT for TOAL? Even if all yes (which if we’re being honest here is probably not the case)this is sending the wrong message to what is already a heavily restriction and fractiously legislated activity. I believe you lose some sensors (if not all) in sport. If you're approaching a questionable tree/obstacle, kind of go wide, if possible, allowing the drone to accurately trace you. Also, the controller rigged onto your chest is a great idea.... I put mine in my backpack which wasn't a good idea (especially with sticks still attached)

    As a drone operator all I'm going to input was there are some great shots/video in this, however - ensure you follow the CAA code at all times and VLOS is key. Technically you need to be fully in control while flying irrelevant of the mode you're in...but it's all a risk assessment and clear code from the CAA. Good stuff :)

    DJI needs an app that will allow you to control it via your phone. Slow speed basic maneuvering and “follow me” features should be available via phone without the remote. They can even set it to where if the link to the phone dies, the drone lands. That’s the future of drones anyway, so the sooner they do this the better.

    You can’t legally operate a drone while riding a bike or vehicle in the USA. You also have to have visual line of sight on the drone at all times, so unless you have a buddy filming you, those autonomous features still make you the pilot in command. Obviously the FAA doesn’t have the people to enforce the rules they created, but the rules still exist so post your videos publicly at your own risk.

I would be interested to know their thoughts in relation to having suitable control of the drone if as in the video the controller is zip tied to a person whilst riding a bike meaning they cannot see the screen or access controls easily. It’s fine when nothing goes wrong but what happens when it does. I couldn’t personally see any court or insurer accepting it. Sounds melodramatic I know but it is the reality.

    It's bewildering to me why the pro peloton can't use drones instead of that army of motorbikes and helicopters. Just think, you would be able to get footage in the middle of the main peloton or anywhere around the riders. It would be safer for everyone to get rid of those motorbikes and some cars. But no, the UCI comes up with this rule that they want all the teams to reduce their carbon emissions. I scratch my head at how stupid some of these agencies are when they can't see the technologies right in front of them.

    Before I watched this video I made a bet that it wouldn’t comply with current UK laws… safe to say I don’t owe you any cash Neil. 😉Even though the flying in this video was very low risk, as others have pointed out you did not follow the current regs on a number of counts. Unfortunately the laws at present are quite complex and as you are a big company operating commercially you really need to be whiter than white - please remember model flying in general is under huge scrutiny at this point as authorities attempt to legislate us all out of the air so that commercial operators can use the low level airspace (even though the tech is not ready for them to do that yet). All it would take would be a report of this video to the authorises and you could end up with a nasty knock on the door (yes it’s rare, but it does happen).
