I Bought a Chinese HO Steam Locomotive - QJ 2-10-2 Unboxing

Ойын-сауық

After reading up on the history of RJ Corman, I've been interested in getting a Chinese QJ class 2-10-2 steam locomotive. The QJ was one of the last steam locomotives to be developed and production continued into the late 1980s.
In 2006 RJ Corman purchased QJ No. 7040 and had it rebuild before shipping it to the United States. The locomotive was remodelled to give it a more "American" look. This included removing the deflectors and adding red skirts along the boiler.
The HO scale model I ordered seems to ironically be made in Germany by a company called "K-First". There isn't anything online about it however the product seems to be of good quality.

RJ Corman actually either sold or donated their QJ locomotive to the Kentucky Steam Heritage foundation from what I heard. I understand that after they finish restoring C&O 2716 it will be restored sometime afterwards. They seem to be building up a line of steam engines to restore as I think they're supposed to work on a Nickle Plate Road steam engine as well as L&N 152, which is owned by the Kentucky Railroad Museum just like C&O 2716.

I am from mainland China. In the 1990s, in front of my house, QJ-type steam locomotives passed by more than a dozen times every day. The appearance design of Chinese steam locomotives was inspired by the Soviet Union and Germany, predominantly black and red, with minimal decoration. However, there were many specially designated locomotives with unique markings.

I remember back in 2005 I was granted permission to come to RJ Corman's Rupp Yard in Lexington, KY because a family friend knew an engineer who worked for Corman at the time & I got to ride in the cab of GP38-2 #3801 & drive it across the yard after we filled out paperwork to come onto the property. I was only about 5-6 years old at the time, it was such a fun time. About a year later, I saw a NS & Conrail diesel pulling a steam locomotive across the local crossing of our hometown & I yelled for my parents to come look. Sure enough, it had the Corman banner on the side of it & we knew it had to be Old Smokey on it's way to Rupp Yard. It was the only time I have ever gotten to see Old Smokey in reality, & I am so glad it's slowly getting the recognition the locomotive desperately deserves. I look forward to seeing what comes from this project!

I saw a number of QJs running over Jinpeng pass and other places in December 2000. the ones I saw didn't have enclosed cabs with doors even though the temperature was minus 24 degrees celsius. The only one I travelled on certainly didn't have a glazed roof, and I don't recall seeing them on the rare occasions I was looking down on them. They were very powerful and sure footed I never saw one slip even with a 7,000 ton coal train. Very often they ran double headed. The 2-8-2s were still made to order in October 2000, but by then they had stopped mass producing them on a continuous production line.

The tractive effort of QJ is worth like 320 kN. Many main lines in China can regularly have up to 20‰ slopes, and sometimes up to 25‰, while the axis-load limit is usally 20 ton or 25 ton. So locomotives are to designed with maximised tractive efforts using a limited axis-weight.

Very nice. Seen videos of Iowa Interstate's QJ working freight. Boone & Scenic Valley in Iowa has a Chinese 282 JS class that they imported about the same time. New York Susquehanna & Western had also ordered a JS but either it and the ship it was on or just the locomotive is somewhere on the bottom of the Pacific. Air horns were surprisingly common on steam locomotives towards the end of steam. Heard a story about one of the more famous railfan photographers as a young man had borrowed the family car and set off to the other side of the state to photograph the last of the NYC Niagra 484s. Sat trackside the better part of the day photographing nothing but diesels and with time to be home by his promised time running short he was starting to consider packing up and heading for home. As he was about to start packing up CTC lit the eastbound track up green so he figured to risk fatherly ire to wait for one more train. After a bit he hears an air horn blow for a couple of crossings up the line so at that point it's another diesel powered train as far as he knows and packs his gear and as he gets a couple blocks away looks in his rear view just in time to see the Niagara roll by.

The name KFiRST originates from a legendary steam locomotive - KF1, which was China’s only main line steam locomotive with axle arrangement 2-4-2 back then. The KF1 steam locomotive was designed in China and built in Britain. KFiRST is committed to developing Chinese train models conforming to NEM standards, to the promotion and popularization of DCC technologies. The N-scale Shaoshan 7C electric locomotive model is now on the market, which is the first N-scale Chinese locomotive model, with a digital sound version simultaneously on sale. We have put another HO-scale Qianjin (QJ) steam locomotive model on the market, which is the first steam locomotive model equipped with synchronous sound and smoke effects in China. What is worth noting is that this product, by accurately detecting the motor speed, truly simulates the smoke and steam in four puffs at one cycle of the driving wheel. The main components of the locomotive, such as boiler, chassis, tender body and so on, are made through zinc alloy die casting process. Pipelines and most of the details are made from separate moulds, and so the model is full of rich details. The unique design of the transmission mechanism makes it possible to get rid of the gearbox between the boiler and the chassis. This model boasts rich lighting and sound effects, and delivers excellent running performance so that it can easily travel through complex tracks and points. KFiRST will focus on the development of more high-quality Chinese train models in the future.

Most of the visitors are film crews or photographers. But as I know in Tieling, Liaoning Province a special train tour is held and pulled by their local steam locomotive (forgot what number it is). You know, special steam train tours.

There were two new Chinese 2-10-2 locos imported to the U.S. by Iowa Interstate. Later, R J Corman purchased one of those two from Iowa Interstate. So now, Iowa Interstate has one and Corman has the other. There have never been three in the U.S., only two.

With all due respect, that's incorrect. Iowa interstate imported locomotives No.7081 and No.6988. RJ Corman separately imported No.7040 and later renumbered it as No.2008 so there are 3 QJs in the U.S.

China was producing steam engines all the way in to the 21st century, the newest known Chinese steam locomotive is a C2 class narrow gauge built in 2015, crazy to think there are steam locomotives in regular service that are less than 10 years old. There's been an attempt to get a C2 class built in 1988 working on the Ffestiniog railway in Britain as well.

Interesting, I might be interested in getting one of those. I visited China in 1987 to photograph steam. Our tour saw and or photographed somewhere around 600 steam locomotives in three weeks. At that point there were numerous standard and narrow gauge examples still operating in the country, and Datong and Tang Shen were still building steam. However, by then Datong was only building JS Class Mikados, QJ production having ended in 1986, and all steam production ended in 1988. Operationally, the crews were as likely to use the air horn (yes they did sound like the one you have) as the whistle (which were air-actuated, so no twilling), and the Chinese do not use bells. The top headlights were Mercury Vapor, like street lights, and headlights were pretty much only used after dark. What I would really like to find a model of, and I don't think anyone makes a model of one, is a Polish OL49 Class 2-6-2, which is what I ran on the Wolsztyn Experience 15 years ago. If anyone knows of such a model please reply to this comment.

Jinpeng pass in winter was the best place to see them in December 2000. 14 trains a day struggled over the pass going round and round in big loops of track to get over the hill. All but one train was pulled by QJs. In the freezing cold even the steam pusher that moved coal forward in the tender put out 10 times more "smoke" than the smoke on the model. The one l travelled on had two firemen, l think one was a trainee. There were three crew and 4 visitors in the cab, a very spacious cab. I think some had automatic stoker's but they didn't use them as they were unreliable. Google Jinpeng or Jitong line to see them. The German mark is just a mark to say they meet German quality or safety standards, not the place of manufacture.

Very nice locomotive Harrison! The pulsing smoke feature has been on BLI and MTH steamers for awhile. It's pretty much a given that Scaletrains will carry on that feature after purchasing the tooling from MTH back in 2021. Fyi: Scaletrains has announced the first of those locomotives to be released will be N&W 611 as well as the matching passenger cars, with the official unveiling sometime during the first part of this year.

The motor module integrates the motor leads and two Hall elements for detecting the motor speed. The two Hall elements are arranged on the base board at a 45° angle. On the flywheel of the motor there are two symmetrically arranged magnets, which scan through the Hall elements, and the Hall elements send off a signal to the main board, at an interval of 0.25 turns between two signals. Since the transmission ratio of the locomotive model is 1/25, when the motor rotates 25 turns, the driving wheel rotates 1 turn. To make the sound effects four times at one turn of the driving wheel, it needs to detect the motor running by 6.25 turns. There is a counter on the main board that records the signals from the Hall elements; each signal is 0.25 turns, and when 25 signals are counted, the counter sends off a signal to the decoder. In this way, precise synchronization between the driving wheel and the sound effects is thus achieved. The sound and smoke synchronization technology is unique from KFiRST.
