Personally, I would run it to a garage to see what it really needs, but I'd be fully prepared to not committing to the repairs. I'd say the first thing is to work out what it mechanically needs before anything else.

There's a lot of parasites in today's society. There's a lot of people such as landlords and 'investors' who don't do any real work. They just sit on there arse all day exploiting people - getting other people to pay their mortgage, getting something for cheap and then flipping it for a profit. You'd think they would want a proper job. Society is full of them.
I love these cars and I think you got a bargain. As someone who worked at a VW dealer for 10 years, my advice is as follows. Take it for MOT and ring Autoglass for the price of a rear screen. On the basis of this if you can do everything for £2K or less I would go for it. I think the front discs will clean up if the car is driven and the rears may be worth having skimmed. A rare, unusual and desirable car of that age and mileage with all its book pack, good tyres and reasonable service history is worth saving, especially a 4 motion version. I think it would be a tragedy to sell it for spares. I think these cars are future classics, please tidy it up and KEEP it, in another 5 years you will be glad you did. Think of it as a cut-price Bentley and not an expensive VW, cars like this will never be seen again.

Dangerous viewing is one thing, dangerous buying is another. I've not even watched it yet but I reckon it'll need at least another grand spent on it to be decent. Far too complicated and far too much kit to go wrong 😬

Me too😂 Such a pointless car.....I love them! I worked in a pub as a younger man and a regular turned up driving a brand new one , this was back in 2003, and it was the first one I ever saw, it was the awful gold/beige colour with the tan interior, it wasn't very pretty really but it was still cool when he parked it next to my MK2 Golf Driver! Turned out he was a VW sales manager and a little while later he turned up in the first R32 I ever saw, his usual ride was a high spec Bora or a Jazz blue MK4 GTi with full black leather, he was a cool guy, he turned up for his after work pint in an oak green mk2 GTI 16v once, the really rare one with the even rarer factory cream leather! It was a car that somebody had traded in at his dealership. So long ago now!

@@phoneitbuyitpickitup9212 That's a cool story. I wish I had some. I did work in a car dealership as a trainee salesman and they wouldn't let me drive a Lexus GS300 in cold weather because it was rear wheel drive. I did get to to drive a BMW 5 series once the weather was warmer 😂. Good Times

Hi Matt, its a solid car and could be a great project for someone. There is probably just as much, or more margin for you to punt it on for £1500-£2000 in its current conditon than you would get if you invested the time to sortout the issues. Its an ideal project for an enthusiast who doesnt have to pay for labour costs

I love the Phaeton's design. It's pretty much a 2000s masterpiece. Very elegant and solid at the same time. Yes it does look like a beefy Passat but that's not a bad thing.
I always think, oh the interior looks really good, until I realise Matt’s still in the Range Rover - gets me every bloody time!

Excellent video, well worth the time, even, if only for the process of learning how to assess a vehicle. Good work.
The speed with which you can prod and poke a cigarette lighter or a sun visor never ceases to amaze me. You could have a second job as a sharp-shooter for SO19. Great channel ol' fruit. Keep up the good content.
Let's make this a group project! Put up a list of all the bits you need and we can have a competition amongst ourselves to source them as cheap as possible. Local scrappers, that sort of thing. Then maybe if it ever gets warm we could randomly pop into HPA and each tighten a bolt or something.

This isn’t challenge anneka. Get rid of it for anything over the purchase price and move on. It’s done it’s job making a cracking video in the usual style. End of story
I’m not generally a VW guy but I’ve always really liked the Phaeton. A classy car. And I’m a sucker for grandad garden centre spec beige interiors. My advice would be to plough every penny you have into it.

I'm not a big fan of volkswagen cars but the phateon is the only German car I would consider buying because im a big fan of the interior. I would personally buy the citreon c6 because it is a better car.

Biggest expense is going to be the rear screen if you can find one. One on eBay in Leeds breaking for spares. The rest brakes etc are all available.Seems a shame to break this up as it isn't high on the miles

Low miles and clean leather interior mean it should be worthwhile at least properly costing up the repairs - we need to know what the Check Engine Light and Exhaust Workshop means!

I think you answered your final question in your intro. They are quite rare, expensive to run and maintain and are without a doubt an enthusiasts car. Parted out this could be worth a multiple of what you paid. The interior looked good . Body panels seemed okay, lights and small parts, engine and gearbox. The fact that someone was forced to buy and fit a European shift lever tells you how rare these things are. I have a mate (I live in Germany) who had one of these and he said to me "It's great to drive when it's running, costs a fortune to run and God help you if breaks down and needs spares." In a case like that it's a sellers market. As you have commented on many occasions "It's just a rear light for 50-60 quid." but that was for freely available parts. Today 07.11.2023 here in Germany a set of used rear lights for this model costs 350 quid used! Overhauled engine 4 grand (just the block). Overhauled automatic gearbox 3,500 quid. 2,500 quid for a used set of seats and door panels similar those shown here. Food for thought?
As Phaetons go this is a very base spec model, yes they come with good spec as standard for a £50k ish car from new. But without being looked after they will have the same issues as any other expensive car run on a budget. As it has minimal to no options its probably not worth investing in, they weren’t all available as AWD I believe early ones may have been front wheel drive. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!
Hi Matt..interesting vid as always :) I think if you were going to keep it for yourself and run it for a good while it may be worth doing, after you've worked out exactly what it needs time and ££ wise...but if you can move it on for spares/to someone who loves them and wants a project that's what I'd do..good luck!
Love the interior, very classy looking. This is the type of car that would suit a wedding car company or a funeral parlour. It oozes class and it would be great to see it looking all shiny and new again. The ultra low mileage for it's age and how nice the engine sounds suggests that there is quite a bit of life left in this car. You could imagine a driver in a chauffer outfit welcoming passengers into the rear compartment. It might be old but it really is a thing of beauty 😍

I've always loved this model. Very nice shape, looks very sleek and despite it's age still looks modern. In good condition great cars.
I think it's worth it just for its lovely stylish qualities and the low mileage is a bonus.I have a 55 C6 that I won't part with for similar quality reasons even though it has cost me fortune.I am currently going down the same road with an old Saab but I do like the mix of a comfy drive sitting in leather seats with an engine that's got a bit of poke-probably a throwback to my first car which was an Austin Cambridge!

Sounded sweet enough and with approx 80k miles it still has much life left in it to deliver. It probably isn't a good car for your business to turn round, but, a rough diamond for a home mechanic to put right over the course of a couple of spring months on his drive and use it for another 120k miles. Biggest aggro is the rear screen, the exhaust issue is likely down to too many short runs. She's probably a dream find for someone at the end of the rainbow with the time and skills plus the inclination to get a lowish mileage luxury motor for a bit less than they usually go for.

Think I’d look into the exhaust issue. That’s probably why they traded it in. Very rare car thou, once sorted it would be very nice and still very usable 👍
I've got a 2010 XF-S. Lovely cars! The wheel nuts in the box are always worth having, the factory nuts are made of cheese and often snap when removing them if they've been overtightened! And this white XF has the optional 'Aero package' it has a different front bumper and curvy side skirts.
These are lovely cars and I don't think it needs that much to get back into reasonable condition, the biggest problems are the rear window and the transmission lever, the other parts could be after market parts and so not as expensive. I think it needs a good check over and then compile a list of what needs to be sourced and price it up.
I'm enough of a fan of the Phaeton to know that you'd be opening up a world of hurt. Spares or repairs, someone with a similar one might be able to get one good one from theirs and yours.
I do believe that I drove this car when it was new. I was a driver for Richard Alexander. Huddersfield. I drove it down to Gatwick Airport there and back twice . It was a dream car.
Good finding a rare luxury car like the Phaeton. Hope it's in good condition. The Phaeton does do a lot of part sharing with the Audi A8.
Money pit as it is, this car has bucket loads going for it and deserves a fresh shot at life as only you can achieve. You could then raffle it to recoup your costs. The KZread content alone would be priceless and we would lap it up. Go on Matt, you know you cannot just walk away from this one.👍

I love the Phaeton. I've always wanted one but the potential for astronomical repair bills scared me off, especially with the air suspension. Oh and Phaetons are notorious for that corrosion, especially on the doors under the trim. Beautiful cars regardless.

I found one W12 6.2LT at a local dealer, like 2012 with seems real 190k km, seems in almost mint pristine conditions for like 10k... seems almost unreal, can be maybe the mainenace - repair cost?
Body swerve time🤣🤣🤣 these were hard enough to maintain back in the day due to vw only having a few appointed service centres. Parts will be an issue and more than likely expensive. Interesting to see how you get on with it😎
This is what my old boss used to call a "council estate limo". Personally, I'm a man of low standards and simple pleasures. I'd do the brakes and use it for work until the back window falls out.

I'm 33 and I'm at my second Phaeton.Current one is a 2012, full spec, previous one was similar to the one in this clip.Both 3.0tdi.I know the car 100%. Ride quality is amazing, so quiet and smooth, better than BMW 7series or A8. The one in this video reminds me of my old one.Interior and engine looks in a very good shape.With some outside work you can make it as new.
Great video, I rally enjoyed it, as for the car, well it’s a tricky one, it’s worth saving, but at what cost?😊.
It would be cool if you could do a video going over different MOT histories to show examples of good, ok, bad, etc. , what to look out for, what to ignore and so on. Love your videos, as someone not originally from the UK they are extremely helpful!

I remember this car reviewed on top gear. It’s basically an S-Class/Bentley level luxury (for its time) for a cheap price. Car never caught on because of the badge. Thought about buying it, but it might be too big for me 🤔

Rusted discs and neglected. Get it on a ramp and check the underside. At this age there is the prospect of corrosion to inner-sills, bulkhead, and floors. Also, lots of electronics and "tricks" to go wrong! With older "barges" it is the bits you don't see that are often the most important. I have much experience of Jaguar XJs.
I think that’s a much nicer car than given credit for. It’s clearly sat up for a long time and the brakes with some use would surely come back. A good detail and a wheel refurb would leave it nice enough exterior wise. Then a decent service and it would probably do an MOT. Well worth doing and saving and it’s great content.

Great looking car Matt, but either sell it as a "spares or repair" item or sell it piece by piece, which could be lucrative, given their rarity (assuming you have the time and/or inclination).
The beeping when starting up would put me off for a start especially at 5.30 am in the morning for my work commute, would have been a stunning car in it's day 😎
Moneypit, I'd run away from this one. Also shocked by the build quality for a car that price.
Well apart from asking your guys for a pre MOT I'd definitely look for the availability of that rear screen, and above all ask myself if this is the sort of car that will sell during difficult economic times. Probably one to move on through the trade, in my opinion Matt.
My Dad has had one of those since new on a 58 plate and it's been a bit of a money pit. The areas of corrosion on the door trims were acknowledged by VW to have been a fault and his was repainted under warranty 2 times, same with the door mirror surrounds. You won't find a working door mirror easily, when the chromatic element failed on the driver's side I replaced it for him with a non dimming version because the correct one was coming on what you paid for your car. You also closed your bootlid manually but yours has the cable running from the nearside to say its automatic, that's what people are talking about with the bootlids, it's very expensive to repair. If yours has the air suspension, check it works. Check also the tracking as its common for them to eat tyres from the inside edge without you noticing. The cars also mostly had a dehumidifier to prevent the windows steaming up and that fails regularly and is special order from VW. The turbo has also failed once (same engine as yours). He has it serviced at a main dealer still because its just the way he does things but the last bill he had was £4k for the turbo and suspension work. I would be careful, they are like old houses, once you start delving you will just keep finding more problems

I've seen and read much about these cars and would love to see more . They are supposed to be fine cars but maybe a handful for maintenance. I'd love to see a test. Get it running well and daily drive it for a few months to see how reliable it is, then give us a real evaluation. Please don't just do one video and leave us hanging. I HATE THAT !!!

Might take a long while, but keep it till you find all the parts, & let us know as you find them. All people who REALLY love cars love the Phaeton, and it will be one more still on the road, & a good one to boot. I suspect the mechanical issues will be relatively minor, but I might be wrong.
Very interesting video. As I commented in your previous Phaeton video, these are hugely under rated and overlooked capable cars but also quite complex with lots that can go wrong. Can be amazingly cheap to buy but big bills to fix. And as you rightly pointed out, due to the very low production numbers, spare parts can be a big challenge. I love a luxury barge too, especially when the purchase price is such an amazing bargin but if it was me buying, I'd be steering clear of the Phaeton. Even if I found a "good un" I'd constantly be worried about something going wrong or breaking and how difficult / expensive it might be to fix. A real shame, as I truly like these cars. In short, I would walk away from this one but with a very well deserved respect for it's engineering and barge like cruising comfort.
Unless you can do all the maintenance and minor repairs yourself, as I have on my 2003 W12, stay away from it. There's a bit of trick sticking the gear lever back on. Most importantly pull out the button on the side and secure it before you pull it off and don't forget to remove the clip behind the badge trim.
Think you should try and save it. You got the contacts. You like a challenge. As usual great content and Humour.
Hi Matt, love these videos. As a trader you shouldn’t fall in love with your stock. Great parts car and I love the interior but too many downsides and even in the unlikely event that everything goes well there’ll be limited profit. Too time consuming (time is money) so maybe time to move it on? Keep up the great work

Hi Matt, I owned an 06 3L and thought it was one of the best cars I had and did me for 7 years. Had a problem with the paint bubbling on the doors and took it back to VW. They resprayed the bottom half under warranty because it's an aluminium body with steel trim bolted through without proper separation washers. good luck with this one.

Lovely barge - id be finding out how much that rear screen is going to set you back and get a garage to give it the once over and find out what’s going on with the exhaust/ causing the EML - then take it from there. Love the car park walk arounds 😂 my wife often comments saying what shed has he bought now 😂

Though it would be a fine old thing if you brought it back up to standard, how sellable/desireable would it be once finished? (Those self-hiding front cupholders are almost worth it on their own though!)
Braveheart playing on Classic FM, being as you are, brave enough to buy these old cars, that was quite fitting.
I really wish they still made a new generation of this car I’ve always been obsessed with it and it looks very elegant

Not as poor as Arderns' reputation....
It's a rare motor Matt and for me, it has a lot of appeal, most of what I could see was fairly superficial stuff given its age, I take your point about the gear selector button that did not seem to fit at all. I don't think vast areas of paintwork are required as it will certainly mop up. The engine sounded very sweet to me, though I could not really hear the transmission just in the carpark. My first thought was it looked a little damp and when you opened the bonnet there were a lot of leaves present and other debris so I suspect the drains may be a tad blocked. I think the biggest headache will be the rear screen, I wonder if you acquire a pattern rear screen? Perhaps measure up an A8 screen for size?

Literally my dream car. If it were mine I'd do discs, pads, service, get it MOT'able and MOT'd then just smoke about in it exactly as is. Non obligatory mirror is definitely just an advisory as you know and the same for the rear screen. I'm not sure if a management light being on is a fail for an 06?
I don't know why but i've always wanted a phaeton because of it's mythical reputation (VW boss sticking two fingers up a the premium brands and throwing everything into this car) so i'd always say go for it and fix it up if anything because it's a bit of a unicorn

The boss was Piech but it's still a humble VW,very few paid 70k for a posh Passat...and as you can see here quite a few things need doing for just 80k miles.Nice air vents and boot hinges but way short of a 7 series in other ways,lots of cheap VW parts bin bits in there.Clever man,Golf's had nice interiors but cheaply made mechanical bits.
Love this being a vw fan myself, I own a mk7 golf r and wanting a second car like this some time in the future, think I’d probs go for the Passat cc though

I’d personally suggest it isn’t worth the cost; which is a real shame as I’ve always had a soft spot for them. As you say, I’d be a little frustrated if I’d ploughed £80k into it from new and only got 80k miles out of it

Good point. One I've been trying to explain to people for years. Spend £120k on a car. Keep a full main dealer servicing at a cost of tens of thousands Do ONLY 80k miles Car falls apart and is worth nothing in the end. It's the modern plague of all these luxury brands Doesn't matter who makes it. A luxury car with only 80k miles is utterly worthless. Parts only ever get more expensive. Inflation. Car depreciates, but everything else inflates. Labour and parts. Why. Bother? Lease the bastard and dump it after 3 years. It's a mug's game buying old barges, as much as I love them and have bought many many old and cheap top spec BMW 7 Series and Merc S Class. Even if you're in the trade (cheap labour and they won't rob you). Life is too short to waste on these things. Unless you are M539 Renovations and can do it full time. Even then, it's only a few quid in profit. It's one thing enjoying these videos. It's another actually having to burn money in a skip fire. It's like trying to smother a skip fire by throwing so much money on it, that you starve it of oxygen and the fire stops.

I can't think of a bigger waste of time and money than old barges. I've wasted tens and tens of thousands. I could have easily have bought a 2 bed flat with the amount I've spent keeping a fleet of old BMW 7 Series maintained, which was my hobby. If you're a billionaire. Go for it. Hire a full time mechanic to work for you 24/7 with your own private aircraft hanger sized garage, so you can enjoy a nice Sunday drive in an old luxury barge in mint condition.

It’s NOT the cars fault if owners are rough with a car, and don’t maintain it… IF this car was properly looked after, it would be a lovely luxury vehicle, with low mileage, for its age.
I used to own a 2006 3.0TDI Phaeton and would have ran from that one (from a purely business decision perspective). The rear window has about 5 antennas embedded in it in addition to the heating, I was quoted £1350 for 4 discs and pads from the main dealer, but I haggled them down to £750! Corrosion near the horizontal door trims is due to galvanic corrosion between the steel fixings and the aluminium door panels and is a recognised fault by VW. In relation to the boot hinges, the fancy alloy hinges are only present on models with the automatic opening/closing boot option (which mine had) the manual boot models just had pressed metal versions. Getting 4 nearly new "103" load rated tyres that can do 155mph+ will have got a bit of your £1k back though! Magnificent car though when everything is working. The build quality puts my current Merc to shame!
Hi Matt. Car doesn’t look too bad. Discs could probably be skimmed & the rest isn’t that bad except that rear screen. I think I with an MOT and brakes & exhaust problem sorted it’s got to be worth £2.5k to the right person.
The fact that the are rare and with low mileage deserves a little bit of magic sprinkled

"Exhaust workshop" means the turbo is likely blocked up and needs rebuilding. Its something you really need to watch out for because if the oil feed mesh in the turbo becomes blocked it can starve the bottom end of oil and throw a rod. I'd strip it for parts.
It needs to be saved. It is a rare car. I'm sure you will get your money back if it is well sorted. Keep up with great videos
Hi Matt. I think it's simple, but only due to it's rarity... If the rear screen and door mirror are cheap enough, do the basic jobs and stop spending money on wheel refurbs. Most people I know accept wheels get kerbed. If not break it for spares or pass it straight on. Take care.

I have a very similar 07 reg with 80k on! Mine hasn’t been any trouble Exhaust workshop is probably swirl flap controller. Will come and go. I reckon the brakes are probably ok. I’d just mot first then go from there. It’ll do more than a grand with a clean and a ticket
its worth it also you do tend to spend some unnecesary money like the plates are fine just give em quick wipe down and done
Get it sorted and raffle it off Matt, I would surely buy a few tickets. Great cars.

Looks like it needs a lot of work but also looks too good to break and the content will be good seeing it finished. If there's not enough profit in fixing it up and selling it, maybe you could fix it up and raffle it.
Had a friend who owned one of these. The electric boot lock failed, with no access through rear seats, so VW garage couldn't access the mechanism. The only solution was to cut a hole on the boot lid. I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. It's a total Friday afternoon afterthought of a design. It's a Markle car, looks good, rides well, multiple disappointed previous owners, but it has so many problems the owner will always regret ownership.
would be worth doing the discs yourself, depending on the price, other than that all the other jobs seems pretty straight forward, it looks in pretty good condition as well
That rear window will be double glazed I guess. I had a D2 generation Audi A8. It needed a windscreen and we had to order one from Germany. It was the third to last one in Europe. Good luck

I honestly think this car is worth more in parts than selling it second hand. The seats for example are in great condition, could be worth a fortune. I see these Phaetons quite often still in the Netherlands / Germany, so perhaps it is worth more across the pond, just an idea.

Clearly it is worth more sold for parts but breaking it would be a tragedy. People in the rest of Europe have more taste look at the values of the Phaeton across the channel.

@@TwizyMan Many cars are worth more as parts, however that dosn't mean they should be scrapped. If someone wants to keep the car for years then it may be worth fixing but obviously not worth it for resale
The raffle model means you can afford to get an old car back on the road when it is otherwise unviable. This one would need a great deal doing to it but I think it can be saved because a few videos of the restoration work would whet viewers appetite if they see it done right. On the other hand, there are easier projects. Also I’d enjoy a few videos about how you break a car to make a profit!

I've always liked the idea of breaking my old cars, once they've become too uneconomical to maintain. Knowing that I could make way more money than the scrap man's average £200 offer is enticing. But what do you do when you're left with just the bare carcass on your drive? What scrap man is gonna want to pay you for it and and come a take the undrivable car away, once it's had all it's goodies taken off? You're left with a lump of metal that you need to pay to have shuttled away to a scrappy for free and that's if they'll accept it?
Come on, keep this piece of German engineering greatness on the road… you have the connections 👍

In Germany this would be a nobrainer at 1000£. The fact that people love the trunk hinges is they are referring to the ones of the motorized version which are polished aluminium. Not having this trunk version might save you some trouble as these tend to fail. The aluminium rust at the doors comes standard with a Phaeton, VW used to repaint them.
Matt, you're very resourceful and reckon you could bring her back to life and either sell her or another raffle time!!
