1)get a car vertical check 2)take it to my valeter/ paint man/ it will buff out 3)get my mechanic to check it over, do a service and Mot (gearbox service if its an auto 4)ive massively overspent on this one:) Now im watching to see if i guessed right! Love the videos, love seeing you bring life to cars destinned for the scrap heap because people too eager to buy new cars they cant afford really. Found a new appreciation of how hard you need to work for a living in the motor trade.

Thankyou - a useful but pragmatic insight. I have worked for Renault for over 20 years and the Clio 3 was a reliable and respected car. However, like most runabouts of a certain age, some Clios limp precariously from MOT to MOT until it becomes uneconomic to repair the bigger failures. There are no major faults with this model as used prices testify, apart from rusted radiator mounts, some electrical problems (air bag sensors, loose wires, blown bulbs) and broken springs etc but the long list of faults presented here point to a lack of care and maintenance. Best to pass this one on in the trade I think.

Some people just don't care, or have zero mechanical empathy. Many moons ago, I worked with a woman who drove bangers. The roughest of the rough they were. She never got them serviced, or the oil changed from one year to the next. She drove around until the tyres were bald, with the reinforcing showing through..... Never thought of spending £50 a year on breakdown cover, yet spent half her life - and money - in pubs boozing her time away.....the other half of her income went on rent. She was the sort of person who could fit her life into 2 suitcases.

Im going to keep this short. I think. I have just motd my car in april. It got new tyres and new brake pads and discs front and rear. Then it got serviced. A few months later, i have hd to replace vacuum pump and a new oil change with that. All good. Get car back and i notice the brake backing plate is really badly bent and scaping against my new brake discs. I thought mot they check all this. I thought when. They fit vacuum pump they would check braking system again. I thought when they replaced my new tyres they would of seen the brake plate bent. Clearly mot and service isnt enough. Each time i get car back from repair something else happens. And i fix problems as they arise. Oh and the mot was with no advisories. I am going to see if this guy wants to make a video with it😂

I carried out annual oil changes rather then the Renault recommended 2 yearly because it was doing a lot of short journeys.

Great video 😉 it's such a shame that folks let there cars become so bad . Far to many cars end up getting scrapped prematurely just because the the owners don't look after them . I know the clutch was slipping and everyone always seem to think that there is no adjustment on a hydraulic clutch ! But in most cars you can adjust the clutch pedal . Around 5 years ago I popped my Mazda mx5 (NC) into my local mazda dealer for a service, I was advised that the clutch was on its last legs and would be slipping soon . I was quoted £950 to have the clutch replaced by the dealer so I though I had better do a bit of research. I managed to find a good few videos showing how to adjust the height of the bite of the clutch pedal. I adjusted my clutch pedal as shown on the video until it was starting to bite far sooner than it was before . That was over 5 years ago the clutch is still perfect the dealer never mentioned the clutch again at any of the services . A lot of mechanics will tell you the when the pedal starts getting high the clutch is on its way out !! Well that was not the case for me .

Despite this though, they were rather quiet on the motorway and very good on petrol. In about 2004, I once hired from Enterprise a '53-plate 1.2 16V 'Billabong' in that metallic turquoise that a lot of them were sold in. It also had a dark grey interior with light blue seat fabric. Nice, fun little car that has later proved reliable and very durable.

I know it probably doesn’t matter since it’s being traded out. The airbag light. Try jacking the drivers seat up a notch or two. Mine used to do it and it went out when raised slightly. I owned one of these, although was from 1-6 years old during my ownership and 44k covered in that time. Still got cambelt done at 5yrs even though it was in on mileage, Reno wanted a fortune to do it, so got it done by a local VAG mechanic who was slightly cheaper and probably much more experienced. Mine was the same car, a year older but the 1.2 TCe 100 which is much more lively. Got it from Reno Nottingham and the log book came a week later with previous owner ERAC Ltd (enterprise rent a car) surprised me that it was such a good car, didn’t need rid just wanted a change and sold it to a colleagues father. Still going last time I checked up to about 73k now

I ran a 2004 Clio 1.2 'Extreme 3' from 30k miles to 150k miles and it was a legend of a thing! I drove it all over the UK and to Holland & back twice as well for good measure. Even hit up the Scottish highlands in it. Fully modded with induction kit, custom exhaust, remap and suspension stiffened & slightly lowered made it like a little 100hp go-kart. All you need to do is regular maintenance with them as they (like a lot of the small cheap hatchbacks) are very brittle and are prone to braking apart when driven hard. The next mark of clio that you have here sadly was a bit of a lemon - Renault somehow came up with a way of spending even less of their production budget on the interior and it really is laughable if you sit in one.

I had (2000ish) a Diesel Renault Clio - no end of trouble and cost! In one instance I had a Diesel leak coming from the High-Pressure Fuel Pump, I took it to Renault and they wanted a few hundred to replace it. On the way back, I chatted to a London Black Cabby and he recommended their diesel mechanics - Tower Diesels they were superb, it was simply a grommet, and they charged me £15.00. IMHO, very few mechanics know about and work diesel engines. I greatly appreciated TD and hope they are still going strong today.

I do really like these Clio’s. Should have got one earlier on when I just got my driving license but decided to endlessly saving up to buy a house which here in NL is just as pointless as in the UK. At least as long as the prices rose quicker as I could save up my whole monthly net income living at my parents. Now I am renting (at least for a fair price), and decided to buy a 2020 Clio 5 from a significant chunk of my savings back in 2020, which is excellent. Makes me even more a fan of Clio’s!

I think I'm right in saying that most car owners see their cars in a similar light to their washing machines or fridges. And so most cars don't normally reach their 14th birthday. And, of course, their manufacturers don't want them to. In the scheme of things, that Clio had a pretty good innings.

Pulling off at the end of the video, I half-expected the grass to be on fire because of that clutch or maybe something else. I had a first gen, phase 3 Clio for my first car, 8v version of the same D7F (DiET) engine, and thanks to prior owners bodging the exhaust system, it was even slower than the claimed 0-60 time of 13.5s. Still, the engine itself never let me down, unlike the time the blower didn't work on a 30 degree day but started working the following day. It was sold as scrap so I'm surprised it ran as well as it did, really, and it wasn't bad on fuel.

I saved a Clio 3 1.2 and spent maybe too much to keep it on the road, which the other owner didn't. Love it as my daily driver, dont care about the exterior. Cheap insurance here, and its comfortable. + enough space in the back. A spring corroded two weeks ago, was fairly expensive to fix. The starter, which I changed myself. Coils new, a new clutch, new brakes, new cambelt. Sounds familiar, doesnt it. Still cheaper than a new car. And it has been very reliable, apart from all obvious parts not being cared for almost 17 years...

Maybe I’m not a typical customer, and I’m certainly not a dealer, but the first question I ask about any belt driven car is “has it had a timing belt kit in it’s recent history?”… I will pay more for a car that has, if not, it has to be worth the hassle of me getting it done. The slipping clutch makes this one tricky, if that wasn’t an issue, I’d clean it, service it and get the timing belt done.

My '10 Clio MK3 is touching 155k miles and runs fine.. but it's had an annual service and wearable parts are replaced when needed. The check airbag light is a common fault that can be caused by a loose cable under the passenger seat. Pushing the seat forward can fix it. Clios are notorious for their high clutch though sounds like it's knackered anyway. Only issue my Clio had was the alternator going at 120k miles and wiper motor going thanks to the scuttle drains as they block easily causing it to sit in standing water. Otherwise it's a great little motor.

It replaced a tired and not very reliable eight year old Rover 214, and within a week I was wishing I still had the Rover. It was dull as ditchwater to drive and soooo plasticky. The only thing I liked about it was the green colour - which was stunning. I've never been even vaguely tempted by Renault since.
