One thing the fiat 500 shows, is that it can do 150,000 plus, and if maintained properly then could top 200,000.

You're spot on with what you say Lee. Anyone that has traded cars will always lose money on some, just the law of averages. Another great video.

I feel your pain! When I had my used car business, I stopped buying cars online as I had my fingers burnt too many times on older vehicles. We've all done it, bought a stinker and lost money, it's the way the cookie crumbles! Great video. I hope you manage to get rid of it without too much grief!

I have to take my hat off to you mate, you want to sell cars that are right - your open and honest about the cars you sell and you try not to pass them on with known faults. I used to be a panel beater back in the day so know my way around garages. Freddie dobbs a motorcycle u tuber has a 1.2 fiat 500. Its done well over 200k miles. In the 70s I loved the old fiat 128. I bought one after a golf 1100cc. The fiat was much more dynamic and smooth and revvy but rusted in 3 years.

Love your videos Lee,saw your ones on the c1 and aygo gave me real peace of mind cos i just bought a2012 c1.👍🏼

If the box was decent it would make a ideal parts car as the boxes are near £400 2nd hand or recon. sadly there is not alot of parts to be gained from it 😒

Call me old fashioned but I don't buy online , like to see ,hear ,look at what I'm buying plus it's a good day going to a car auction especially the breakfast!

If i had to buy a cheap run around 100% its your pitch i would be heading to, the channel really helps to grow trust.

The crunching gears are nothing ne for Fiat . I sold a brand new Fiat collected at 1600 on a Friday back In 1979. Owner came back 10 minutes later with a faulty gearbox. 4 mechanics held back from going home whilst the gearbox was swapped out with another new car. F1 racing team would have been proud

I would strip that down for parts and scrap what's left Our of all th 500s I have done I've lost £700 once, broken even a few times but three absolute dogs have been broken for parts and I've always eventually come up on top from those. Even the badly painted doors would fetch over £100 each and the wheels etc you can use on another car.

"Pig"? Wrong colour. But seriously, these videos are compulsive viewing, the way you bring us into your world, and I have learned so much.

No point trying to Put Lipstick on a Pig... by getting Stupid Busy trying to square that circle by sorting all those issues, just best to trade in on for Spares or Repairs, Sold As Is...

Reminds me of the Fiat 126 around 1980 which had non synchro in 1st gear and used to crunch if you tried to engage it before the car stopped.

Lee, Break it, scrap and and keep the usable on the shelf - alloys alone would be worth at least 30% what you paid, and valeted seats on EBay likely the same, and the the weight of the case evens it out ! You do plenty of 500’s, so might be handy to hold stripped bits for the future, and remember….that t’internet is a nasty place ! Keep ‘em comin’! JCHK

We've done around 25 or so 500s usually from CoPart, and gearbox and or clutch problems have never been an issue.Just Lucky?maybe. Having said that, a box from a breaker wont be that much at all.

Definitely true on losing money on the odd car here and there, I bought a Mini 3 months ago at auction to find out it emits blue smoke and made a huge loss. It happens but you have to move on and make that money back at some point. I would never bid online at an auction, rather see a car in person and even if I have to come home empty handed, I rather that than bid online to win something terrible. That 500 definitely needed to be moved on, not worth the hassle.

Every auction I go to, I always start with a shortlist of 20-30 cars, then easily get it down to 5 or less by the time I go and see them in the flesh. Always look better online. Theres an identical one for sale at aston barclay wakefield on Wednesday Lee, lower miles but bodywork gone in all the same places, ding on wing, rust on sills etc etc

I bought a Ford fiesta £200. Body was horrendous, interior was even worse... but mechanically was one of the best cars I ever had 😂 loved it.

Got a punto sporting years ago from bca, all green on assured report, same thing, no third gear, turns out reports only at standstill and walking pace, thing is they'll have known box was knackered, probably had a good laugh putting a chargeable report on it, tbh a lot of auction cars have driving faults that are impossible to suss out, got a mint ssangyong korando the other day, really bad leg on it rattling like mad, thing is no aftermarket ones, 600 quid from ssangyong (!)

It’s a pity the outside of this little Fiat 500 is tatty, because they are very desirable and regarded as chic!. I admire your transparency Lee, showing us that even experienced motor traders can sometimes have a bad buy. As always, very enjoyable content❤.

Re spray it with school grade custard , that stuff is lethal , no rust would dare come through it.

Prone for gearbox issues throw it back in the nearest auction

I’m thinking possibly donor vehicle, to be fair as you say even a very experienced dealer such as yourself can get caught out. The bigger picture I believe is it shows the sort of person you are and your integrity which I hope local people can reflect upon when stepping onto your forecourt. Big question on the person that signed off the MOT though me thinks 🤔.

Oh well mate,shit can happen , As you say a couple of options, the closest to drawing even is to Sling it back in and lose 50%,or put the work in and come out even, So how busy are you!if no work is coming in bite the bullet and do the work, If busy, get shot of it and make some money on the rest of your cars. Sometimes it can come down to one's conscience, and who you are Pushing it on to,it's for you to add it all up,stick with your main plan Mate and it will all come out in the wash, Bill.

A lemon - I think the colour gave it away. Not all bad, the Fiat badge on the front looked ok - it just need’s everything behind the badge changing and a bucket of water throwing over it! 😂😂. Like you say take the rough with the smooth. Better luck next time. Dave Birmingham

Used to have a Marea years ago, 2001, bought it, well serviced, 1st MoT - - - fail!!!! Driving it on M8 motorway, thought to myself "what's that smell??", back seats on fire. The only good thing about Fiats are the engines........ every other part either rusts, falls off, snaps, blows up, or ignites. Then there's the depreciation, I paid around £8000, insurance value was £4000........ so can you advise your subscribers about Gap insurance, you may never need it, but if you do it's well worth it

'A fool and his money are soon parted' as the saying goes. A lesson learned......hopefully.

When I was a road tester at a Peugeot dealership in the eighties we sold a used Horizon and I did the post prep road test; it was crashing third gear and so the salesman phoned the customer to tell him we were going to strip the gearbox. The customer replied not to bother as he was a truck driver and always double de clutched.

How did it pass the last MoT if the bushes are so shot???

Keep it as a spares car. You'll always need something with these FIAT'S so price up the bits you have on it and use it for parts fixing up the other ones.

Bad luck on that 500 but fair play to you for taking it on the chin and looking forwards. A former friend of mine who wasn't a trader still fancied himself as a bit of a car flipper. I'm someone who doesn't mind spending a bit on my cars to keep them in good order. Obviously, I dont expect to get that back when I come to sell it. He used to make me feel like a bit of an idiot as he boasted that he'd never lost money on a car. Good to know he was more than likely talking bullshit.

That noise is never good on the ears, the grinding of gears. Thanks again fella.

Chuck a used box on it, do brakes, leave the rest, say 1200 p ex to clear, box 100 quid, no profit, but at least you'd not blow.

I am a licensed dealer for coming up to 20 years now and also a qualified mechanic and i have only ever lost on 2 cars as i fix them and sit on them to make something rather then take a loss. I have also learnt how to do my own panel work and paint work so nothing that comes my way now doesn't get fixed. It comes down to your skills

Strip the parts that are good and sell for scrap or swap buts you need and dump in auction?

The other option is to strip it for spares for other fiat 500s you buy

If it had a decent box but was just body work issues I would of broken it up, the box is worth circa 350 2nd hand and would of been used in the not to distant future. Sadly not to be, will just see what we can get back on it and move on

Pity really because it would have been a good seller for ya but not all these Car’s are profitable and you will lose money on some now and then,, But people learn from their mistakes God bless Lee my friend,,

Some you win, some you loose but thats just how it goes and anyone who says differently is telling porkys. I would keep the wheels off and swap them round off a pop which has hub caps as it will smarten up a pop and make it look that little bit more appealing

I'd always buy from a dealer I trust, rather than roll the dice and buy at auction... even dealers make some mistakes so what chance would I have?

As you sell so many 500's would it not be worth stripping it for spares and selling the rest for scrap? This is presuming that you have the space to store everything?

What about using for spares although there don't appear to be any spare spares.
