I always raise an eyebrow when watch guys complain that the WR is 'only' say 200m when in reality most scuba divers won't go below 20m and you need specialist equipment beyond 60. If you find yourself at 500m your watch breaking is going to be the least of your worries.

I have the older Superocean Abyss with yellow chapter ring, which looks quite similar but has a slightly different case. One of my favorite watches - wears well, has an on-the-fly sliding clasp - and has been rock solid dependable and accurate for the last decade. Regarding water resistance - I DO swim and do some diving with this watch. But the main reason I pay attention to depth rating is that I've found it to be a pretty good indicator of how robust a watch is in everyday wear, regardless of what I'm doing - working with my hands, swimming, cooking, hiking - etc. Essentially what tool watches are meant for.

I think it's more of an exercise in engineering to say, "This is what we can do". It's as pointless as driving a Ferrari in California rush hour traffic where the Corolla next to you is going the same 25 miles an hour. It's just a marketing selling point.

The best bit of advice I ever received when I first got into the watch collection game...buy what YOU like, nothing else matters. If you buy what you like, you will never be disappointed with your selection. I'd rather wear watches I like than have something with better "resale value" sitting in a bank vault. Just my 2 cents.

I had enough money for one nice watch and decided on the JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon because I read enough people raving about it and convinced myself that it was the watch I ‘should’ have, the ‘sensible’ purchase. I tried it on and found I didn’t really connect with it but still went ahead with the purchase because it was such a ‘good’ watch. I ended up selling two years later after it sat in the watch box doing nothing while the Seiko divers got yet another run out. Then the money slowly frittered away and I’m having to save up for the sports watch I really deep down wanted back then. I just wish I’d had the courage to get what I wanted, rather than what the watch community told me I wanted.

I always used to think about this exact thing and thought that if a watch is being spoken about its probably because its good and if a watch isn't being spoken about its probably because it isn't good. I understood after a lot of maturing in the watch game that just wear the watch that makes you happy because we Watch Nuts don't wear watches to make the watch community happy but rather because it makes us happy and even if you buy a watch that isn't spoken about at all then what could even go wrong, It's just a watch at the end of the day. I think every beginner should have someone that makes them understand this, So they don't end up buying just the Hype watches. I mean its still the safer bet at the end of the day but then what's the point of buying a watch if doesn't make you happy.

Love the review, I bought this exact model because of your “down to Earth” video. I owned a superocean chrono in ‘90, was the second watch I ever bought( frist was a Tag Heuer). They are both no longer in my collection. My focus was getting my “grail” watches, my AP royal oak ,JLC reverso IWC portegieser, Rolex explorer II, ect. After more then 20 years, I own a Breitling again and I love it. Thanks🤗

I like everything about this watch. Especially the "matte" look of the bezel. I love shiny ceramic bezels as well, but this looks superb.

SPOT ON!!!! great review - I bought the polar dial version. I've had it for4 months ... still itching! "Buy the one that makes you smile the most" is EXACTLY why i bought this. I love the simplified dial and hand set. it just flat-out looks terrific.

Bought my first Super ocean in 2000 20 years later still going. Just upgraded to this model with black face. It's such a good looking watch you can feel the build quality. Plus it wear so well. Breitling is so underrated and I'm ok with it, I don't like having the same thing as the next guy anyway.

This is an excellent episode my friend. You know what, you've made me want to look at this watch next time I'm at the AD!

I’ve owned my superocean for about 22 years and its been bombproof, still love wearing it, you wont regret your purchase. 👍

I own a Colt Chronometre GMT but this Super Ocean is really something. Someone below mentioned the matte bezel. Like that. And really appreciated the comparison to other contenders. Nicely done!

Just bought one because of this review, your Wit and humour sold the watch!

Got the white dial/blue rubber version a week ago. Tried on GS, Seamaster, Speedmaster, SO Heritage and I kept coming back to this one. It has such a casual vibe with its matte finish. Not a big bracelet guy and this rubber strap is way better than the Seamaster's. I use the quick adjust everyday. Even new at an AD you can get these at a great price (which leaves you more $ to buy more watches...)

Nicely done, balanced and yet totally subjective. Videography made the watch look, well cool.

“People still pretend that at this price some watches are objectively better.” - no truer words ever said. Great video.

Very good choice. Gorgeous watch and built like a tank. I just purchased the 44 as well with a black dial. Love it.

Nice video of a nice piece! In mid-2020 I was looking for a white-dial diver. After viewing several videos I was convinced that the Omega Seamaster was the one to get. But when I got my hands on it, it didn't convince / catch me. Then I got my hands on the white-dial version of the A17366 with its darkblue becel, hands and markers and I was sold on it. Plus, I saved € 1000 ;-) Greetings from Germany

I have a black dial 44mm Super Ocean and I adore that watch. It’s the older version with full Arabic numerals and I love when all the indices are glowing with lume. I have a larger wrist, so the 44 feels great on me. The bracelet set a standard for me and now I can’t stand cheaper watch bracelets because I’ve been so spoiled. I doubt I’ll ever sell it because it means so much to me and wears so well.

Great choice! It's really a fantastic watch and you won't see it everyday. It's a great blue and that watch is bulletproof.

Its a great watch! I have one as well, but the prior version with the "busy" dial as you say. For some reason, I prefer the busier dial to your version. However, you can't go wrong either way. This is my daily wearer watch. Great review and I enjoyed the macro lens shots!

lol, awesome! A few weeks after your presentation of the black 44mm I was pulling the trigger on this exact same 42mm blue dial with the bracelet :D And I absolutely love it! I did own an Avenger II GMT with the same bracelet (but all polished) before and I just needed another Breitling in my collection as I already sold this one last year.

I was gifted the ref. A17390 back in 2011 and *loved* it. It wore a bit top-heavy and I had to have dress shirts custom made to fit it, but I still miss it and wish that I hadn't moved it along. The movement was also very, very accurate. Congrats on the purchase!

@@YoureTerrific Not that in-house is better than other movements, but the Superocean that I had featured Breitling's first in-house, the B01! Either way, I agree with your take that the only reason that in-house matters is if the buyer thinks that it does.

I bought this piece earlier this year over the Omega Seamaster and Tudor Black Bay. I personally love Breitling’s recent direction. The size and tasteful design were perfect for me, and so, like you, I found myself seriously considering Breitling for the first time, and eventually pulled the trigger.

I was just at the dealers , I was looking at the pelagos Tudor and the Seamaster 300 blue, ended up with a superocean 2 on mesh in blue , absolutely no contest in person the omega was insanely uncomfortable?? Which shocked me , the Breitling was better in every dept….

I'm still deeply in love with my Superocean Blue 42. So much so I've done something I've never done, wear a watch longer than 30 days. In fact I'm at 122 days straight with my Superocean on my wrist. My other watches became so jealous that I'm now pulling a Schwarzkopf so that they get wrist time. Breitling hit it out of the park with this Superocean. It's just a fun watch to wear, look at and enjoy. It's a strap monster and I can't seem to find any real shortcomings against it. I honestly believe has the potential to be a One Watch Collection piece.

Totally agree with the improvement with the more understated dial - this is a lovely watch at a good price, even in the UK it retails at £2,840 before discount. Incidentally, i bought an Omega Aqua Terra here in the Uk two weeks ago, and the bracelet does taper - funnily enough from 20mm to 18mm, and I adore the watch. Great review!

I got the Black 42. One of the my absolute favorite watches. And yes, the 42 wears more like a 40mm. Breitling crystals are by far the best in the market. I’ve always heard about it, but seeing the crystal in person will truly impress you. The bracelet is also great, really balanced. The only thing that Breitling needs to do, is add on the go micro adjustments to the bracelet. They already do it to their rubber straps, not sure why they haven’t updated their bracelets. Nonetheless, Breitling is doing great things, Georges has really invigorated the brand.

Nice. I got my SO II 42 before these came out, but I still love all the numbers on the dial as well as your version. It does feel great on the wrist and would not trade it for anything. Mine gets +2 sec/day. Pretty good for an ETA movement, 3 years running.
