I Bought a Backhoe! Walkaround of My Case 580E

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I bought this for clearing trees around my house and potential side jobs in the future. It needs some work, but nothing too crazy.

I've also got an SE. Mine has the 4 in 1 bucket, the extendahoe option, and a home brewed hydraulic thumb. Everything leaks, gages don't work, brakes are shot, and the shuttle needs a rebuild. But I love the machine. Despite the problems it has been very reliable. Last year I finished digging a house foundation, a septic system, a well cistern, and built a 900' foot road. All in northeast WA where the ground is half boulders. Trucked the tractor east across the Cascade Mountains with a 6.7 Ram diesel and it was a struggle on some of the hills. The tractor weighs close to 16k pounds. Looking fwd to more of your videos.

Nice video. I operated several Case machines back in the 90,s including an old 580E. A very well designed and reliable unit if operated accordingly. I can remember working out the hoe transport locking mode lol. Have never seen one quite like since. Keep in mind dead heading your rams will reduce the service life of the plants rams, seals, keeper pins and such. Happy excavating. 😊😊.

I have one of these, you need to check the motor mounts, I replaced my mounts and did not realize that bell housing is aluminum and if the rear rubber mounts go out the aluminum flanges hammer on the frame and can bust the bell housing.

That's a good note, thank you. I noticed there was quite a bit of vibration over the whole machine from the engine, but I just considered it was due to the design of the engine mounts. I will definitely check them now!

I recently purchased a 580E . 1985 I think, do your gauges work? Can you make a video on the gauges and control levers and how you start yours?

The gauges have been an ongoing battle. The coolant temp. gauge fluctuates all over the place so I ended up installing a mechanical gauge for that one. The voltmeter sometimes works, though it reads lower than actual. The oil temp. gauge does not work, the wiring to the sending unit on the shuttle has been ripped off at some point and I haven't located the remnants yet. The tachometer works, but as the others it is not totally accurate. It bounces around a bit. The primary cause of all these issues is the connector on the back having oxidation and the contacts where the gauges meet the PCB are rusty. One light I did fix recently however is the oil pressure light, it needed the contacts for the bulb socket cleaned and a new sending unit. I could definitely make a video like that, but sadly it wouldn't be until summer.

I could deal with the worn pins on the back pivot arm....but the loose subframe is a major problem...I went to look at one a few months ago the guy was asking 4k but when I noticed this I I walked away...iv had people tell me that eventually it will damage the control valve...hydrolics seem in great shape tho steady movement at low rpms is a good sign...good luck

You think a machine like this would be decent for lifting and moving cars and trucks around?

  • @fixaday

To a certain extent. At the bucket pins, I think there’s approximately 5,600 lbs of lift force, so it can certainly lift most cars. However, assuming you’re using forks, your capacity will likely be in the 3,000 lb range; that’s also assuming a lateral lift (from the side, not the ends). I’ve found that the loader is very strong, but the curl cylinders are the weak point. Those are the most vital for fork usage.

Fishtailing all over the road because you loaded it wrong. Should’ve been loaded backwards where all the weight is. For anyone who wants to know trust me I know I’m a lowboy driver. dump truck driver with tilt bed trailers and dovetail trailers, hauling every piece of equipment we have. The weight is on the back end of those things and fishtailing is caused by having too much weight on the back end of your trailer, you need more weight towards the front.
