I Bought a $20 Tent! - Review of Ozark Trail 1-Person Backpacking Tent!

Ozark Trail 1-Person Backpacking Tent
I'd been thinking about doing some overnight backpacking this summer but I didn't want to invest in an expensive tent if I wasn't going to get out there much. Fortunately, Walmart had this Ozark tent available for only $19.97!

    This is very true. In my younger years I’ve spent countless nights using only a tarp as a tent and I have a good one that I hang over my hammock. For backpacking, I’d hate to carry so much stuff as the tarp, guy-lines, etc can take up a lot of space.

Unfortunately I’m not getting out too much these days as I have a very sick dog and am spending all my nights cuddled with her. I definitely appreciate the info. There is another version of this tent out there with a full fly so the door is covered. Sadly, Walmart doesn't carry that version, but I'm sure you can find one under another brand name out there. I'd spray the fly, and bathtub area with waterproofing spray before using this. Fiberglass poles break too often for my taste.

    That’s good to know! Sounds like I’ve got a bit of research to do. As a rule, whenever I’m testing or reviewing a product, I’ll always show it as it comes. If I decide to keep it, rest assured it gets waterproofed. I agree about fiberglass, too. My last tent reviews was a $30 Magellan and the two fly pole broke less than 6 hours in to my first night. Not a good look for Magellan. 😢

    Strangely enough i have an old (the current model is a bit different) 2 person dome tent from Ozarks that is notably smallwe than this one when packed up. It's a 7ft×7ft tent with a 42" height at the center. Kind of surprised the one person is bigger when packed up. Maybe the poles are in longer segments? This one man is surely lighter but I wanted to mention the size difference because it may be the other offerings from Ozark are more packable than this one. *Edit:* The dome tents use that annoying sleeve style to hold the poles. Not a deal breaker for sub $40, but the one person has clips to hold the poles so that is nice.

    I’ve got an old done tent from them and find it’s also smaller when packed up. I think they could have trimmed the pole sections down to 8” on this and it would be a good size to stuff in a backpack. I do LOVE the clips more than the sleeves though. Seems the poles always come apart mid-sleeve. 🥲

    The current OT models measure: 1P: 7'x4'x36" 2P: 7.5'x4.5'x42" 3P: 7'x7'x44" But I think the dimensions on the 2P are smaller than the one I bought about a dozen or so years ago. I wasn't really interested in this 1P tent beyond its dimensions. It's so close to the 2P that it would be a fairly good deal if it weren't for the fact that pretty much everything else is a bit lacking.

The floor dimensions are advertised as being 5x7 but I can assure you they are rounding up and quite generously. I’d estimate about 28-30 square feet of floor space and maybe closer to 4.3 x 6.6. Still pretty decent size. I’m a large guy and fit comfortably with my backpack and shoes and room to spare.

    I've only really been interested in this (currently $30) tent because I noticed that its size (7' x 4' x 36") is only slightly smaller than that of the $50 2P tent (7.5' x 4.5' by 42"). I had a previous version of that 2P tent for a dozen years and it was a tank. The problems that these standard model OT dome tents tend to have can mostly be explained in one word: Materials. It's not so much that the materials are necessarily inferior. My tent never hinted at falling apart, leaking, etc. It's that so much of the walls are nylon/taffeta rather than mesh that they are hot boxes in warm months, trap all that moisture throughout the night, allow very little in the way of ventilation (related to that condensation problem) and end up weighing a LOT more than tents their size have any right weighing. Obviously, mesh costs a little more, so we get what we get. I believe that 2P tent weighed around 6.5-7 pounds. The comparable upgrade I got with the Kelty Salida 2 (taffeta still too high up the walls) and current 2P budget models like it run around $140 and weigh about 4.5 pounds. I can't help but think that if OT was willing, it could raise the percentage of mesh on its offerings and make at least the same on each if it had to raise the price about $20. But I think that creates another problem for OT, in that if it raised the price, it would sell fewer tents in general, so even if the profit margin was the same on each, it wouldn't make as much money. Compounding THAT is the fact that if they raised the prices, they would also then be competing with companies like Coleman at the slightly above basement price point, whereas there really isn't any competition right now for OT's budget-friendly offerings. Take care.

  • @moonshinenmarshmallows

    This is an amazing and well constructed response that basically sums up how I felt about this tent. It was solid construction which honestly blew my mind for the price but there was very little in the way of ventilation and the rain fly was so snug on the tent that it mostly blocked what little airflow the tent has. I’ll still say it’s a great tent for the price especially for someone a bit younger and smaller than me. I would LOVE to see a mid-range tent. Similar size but more mesh and a vestibule. I’d pay $70-100 for it if it holds up half as good as this one!

  • @cobbler88

    @cobbler88

    9 ай бұрын

    @@moonshinenmarshmallows I've learned more from my wrong tent choices than my better ones. I would say that likely the best price for what you want (from a reputable company with a track record) will be about $120-$130 new, and it will be last year's model or a closeout. It will also weigh about 4.5#. You probably know this, but it's kind of a rule of thumb to basically avoid 1P tents unless you're hardcore UL. It just doesn't work bc of the size and vestibules are often microscopic to nonexistent. If you want a freestanding dome tent, get one that's for one person more than the number sleeping in it. So a single person generally wants a 2P tent and so on. The fact that the size of this one is so close to some 2P tents is what struck me to get a closer look. But obviously the decision to skimp on the mesh causes a lot of issues. Basically EVERY issue. Plus I kind of like my rain fly to cover the whole tent - not leave a gap for the door to have to handle. I would recommend going to the Kelty site and looking up the Discovery Trail 2 ($130 on the website) and the Grand Mesa 2 ($150 on the website). All the specs are there. I don't yet trust the companies like Naturehike, but they seem to have a couple of 2P options around that price point as well. Their website seems worthless so Amazon might be your best bet for the best deal on those as well as the Keltys. I'm actually selling my Kelty Salida 2 tent for roughly the range you're looking at. I humped it up Mount Whitney a few years ago, you should probably look it up to see if the taffeta might go higher than you're looking for on the walls. It's discontinued but if you type it in ("Kelty Salida 2 specs") there should be a dead REI listing if you scroll down a little. Take care.

    I really can't see the point of this tent. For $25 full price you get a 7x7 "3 person" OT tent that's easier to set up than this $30 1 person backpack tent. The 3P is roomy, has a better hoop system with just clips, has better ventilation, is dryer, has a much better fly, a wide door. It is 5lbs and this is 4.
