I Bought a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am - My Dream Car!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After over 10 years of searching, I finally bought my dream car.
A 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, nearly identical to the one in the movie Smokey and the Bandit.
Prior to buying this Trans Am, I spent at-least some part of every day of my life either talking about getting one, or scouring the internet to try and find one. I also would easily quote something from Smokey and the Bandit atleast weekly too.
That movie has impacted my life in many ways and I absolutely love it. It is my favorite movie of all time. Comment down below your favorite quote from the movie.
This 1977 Trans Am is finished in Starlight Black and has the gold decals.
I went with the non T-top car because I am not too fond of having the sun on me when I drive and I didn't feel like putting in inserts 24/7 for the T-tops.
I like the look of the hard top just as well too.
It is sitting on the original wheels and the engine is believed to be numbers matching. 56,000 miles on the odometer.
I am obsessed with this car and likely spend too much time just starting at it in the garage! LOL!
I found this car on facebook marketplace and felt like it had potential to be "the one".
My girlfriend Leah drove me up to look at it and I bought it and drove it back all in one day.
Summit Racing hooked me up with some of the suspension parts:
Hotchkis Sport Suspension Lowering Leaf Spring Packages 2409C: www.summitracing.com/parts/hss-2409c
UMI Performance Lowering Springs 3050F:
www.summitracing.com/parts/upi-3050f/make/pontiac/model/firebird/year/1977
Stay tuned for more modifications and videos to come with this car as I turn it into the best version of itself.

I'm 71 years old now, but in 1977 I purchased a 1975 Trans Am, Mint Condition, Automatic, Sterling Sliver Color, Black Interior, Honeycomb Wheels, 400 Cubic Inch Engine, Screaming Eagle on Hood, with 13,000 miles from a used car lot. Wow did I love that car. Everywhere I drove, non-stop people looking at the car. The sterling silver looked incredible at night. Ather two years of driving fun, the car was stolen. Stolen cars have always been a problem in Brooklyn, New York.

I am Mechanic and engine builder from Canada. Your car is absolutely beautiful, 15 years ago I built myself a 1978 Z28 with 700hp. I truly would have loved to have built what you have but could not find one at the time. I know what you mean about people coming up and talking to you that’s what it is all about😊. There were two 400 ci motors offered at the time you have the way better one of the two. Try to stay away from oil additives, if it is just the oil pan leaking and not the front or rear main seal you can try retorquing the pan but ultimately the car is way too nice just change the oil pan gasket, and make sure your crank case ventilation system is working properly put a new valve in they are cheap. Beautiful car enjoy. I have built hundreds of cars and yours looks in incredible condition, and just from your under the hood shot I can assure you that odometer has not rolled over. Cheers

Congrats man. Sweet vintage ride. Word of advice from us guys that build old cars from the ground up: no additives. Just fix the seal. Additives just cause other problems in the long run. I know it sucks, but you'll be thankful you did it the correct way.

  • @tonysteppan8495

    @tonysteppan8495

    Жыл бұрын

Yup the only thing you get out of additive's is additional trouble. The plus side on a new gasket is knowing extra stuff isn't hanging out around the oil pick up, your oil psi will be more honest, and Hey NO leaks. It's also cheaper than a new engine. Bottom line Michael, you nail it.

What a looker - love it. '77 Trans Am was my first car that I bought when I was 15 years old in the late 1980s (go easy on my parents - I was a good kid, although I drove like I was in Smokey in the Bandit!). Favorite car, still miss it :-) Oh yeah, additives never really work well for oil leaks. I remember how close the pan was to the frame, and I have a memory of replacing my pan gasket one time but had to unbolt the block from the motor mounts and I lifted it up from the top a couple of inches using an engine crane which gave me enough space to work on the pan. Or you might be able to sneak in a floor jack somewhere on the transmission to lift up the tranny and motor and get some clearance (just don't crush the transmission pan). I think I popped on a set of headers while I was at it with a little bit of extra clearance, but it was a long time ago (35 years) so I may remember it wrong ... I had a 350, 400, and final motor was a 455 that I rebuilt with help from family members. Sold that car for $2K with the almost new 455 ... LOL shoulda parked it in a barn and kept it. Anyway, I love the car, looks like it is in A+ condition, I'm jealous!

Same as me. In the late 80’s you saw these cars in used car lots, for sale in someone’s driveway, on the side of the road. Before the internet, we would have to hunt for cars or fine them in the Want Ads or Auto Shopper newspaper. Every Tuesday I would go to the convenience store and get like three different weekly papers that had used cars for sale. Man, have times changed!

@@MrWill73 So true, brings back memories, in the Waco Texas area in the late 80s we had a free classified newspaper called "The Thrifty Nickel" where you could find just about anything, including cars (sort of like a local Craigslist). Then you had the regular paper classifieds. But my favorite: Auto Trader. They had a nice thick print edition that covered much of north Texas and had page after page of Z28s, Trans Ams, and every muscle car you could think of.

@@AustinApologue Oh yeah! I remember the Auto Trader. I believe it came out monthly. Man we’re there some sweet cars in there back then. I remember there were dealers that had a large amount of 30s-40s cars that were complete but needed restoration. I may have a couple in my collection of car magazines that I started collecting in 1985. I learned how to wrench on cars from those magazines.

I plan on importing one for myself before long, im nearly retired now. Tribute to my Dad, rest in peace mate.

@@Drive615 its a 2003 996 C4S. Porsche purists dislike the model because of the headlight shape(?) & its water cooled. It's such a reliable & drivable car though & you probably find the same thing yourself, random people will come up & ask or talk about the car anywhere, anytime which I love because I love the car (my own & your own) myself & I hear some excellent stories from them also. But the other thing is, it keeps me humble & reminded that I'm actually really driving & owning my dream car. Life can be crazy & things happen despite our hopes & wishes so Im never sure how long this will last, & I hope it does, but I'm glad I've had this experience if nothing else. The best way I can describe it is the difference between driving the Japanese truck I use for work & driving the 911 is like the difference between Clark Kent & Superman.

I had one of these when I was 17. It was screaming yellow, with black velour seats, and a 4 on the floor! It had the same 6.6 (400) bone stock. Don't know how you pulled off that smoky hole shot, with that detuned motor. I really enjoyed the car, had a lot of fun with it- however it was really not that fast. I had a 67 Mercury with a 390, and C6 trans, that would eat it for lunch. It did get a lot of attention, from the opposite sex, as well as the 5-O. I'm glad you found your dream car, and hope you enjoy it!
