Hey Joey, that is a coral cat shark /marbled shark egg (Atelomycterus marmoratus) not a white spotted bamboo shark like the picture in the video. They don't get as big. (Around 28 inches ) I would also recommend hanging the egg the other way from where it looks like strings try not to clip the actual casing, when the shark grows it will eventually fill all the empty space and clipping the actual casing will make him cramped. When the shark hatches in probably 2-4 months (full gestation is anywhere from 4-6 months) they will break free from the end that you currently have clipped. also try not to remove the egg from water. I know it seems sealed but water actually does pass through it. If you do take the egg out of water It can cause air bubbles in the case which are hard to remove without "burping" the egg which if done incorrectly can damage embryo. I currently have a pair of these sharks that are breeding . First successful season last year. Good luck! Hope you have success! The little babies will be a little difficult to get to eat at first but usually do after a week or so! You can try a small syringe with very small music shrimp soaked in garlic and shoot the food by their mouths. Love your videos, it's what got me to get a monster 650+ gallon system! If you need any help with the saltwater predators that's what I've been keeping for many years !

I'd suggest using a light which has much less intensity - the potential exists to damage the developing eyes. Also please refrain from removing the eggs from water in the near future. As the shark develops further and grows, the case can (and most likely will) crack and water can leak out - exposing the extremely sensitive gills to air. I recommend that if you do want to view the develoment, a clear plastic or even glass container can be submerged and you can place the eggs within and after withdrawing it from the water you can shine the light from underneath to view the pups in their cases. You possibly have already been told these things, but just in case, a couple of likes to bump this comment so Joey is sure to see it would help - as it's vital information to ensure the health of these young sharks. Looking forward to meeting the gorgeous girls, or guys upon their hatching.

Hey Joey I noticed you put both eggs vertically so the chip-clip would hold them but I think you should try one vertically and one horizontally. I have no knowledge on shark eggs but I had a few ideas why they might grow better horizontally. 1. Sharks are animals of length so as the shark embryo grows it will have more room to grow in a horizontally laid egg in comparison to a vertical egg. I wonder if a vertical egg would cause growth restriction. 2. In a vertical egg, the yolk sac is at the bottom and not fully suspended in the egg and might interfere some how with nutrient delivery to the shark embryo. A horizontal egg would suspend the yolk sac more evenly. 3. If this shark laid/deposited eggs then wouldn’t they fall or be deposited on its side rather that standing up? So it might be more natural in a horizontal position 4. Science is fun and would be an interesting experiment! Just some food for thought. Good luck with the shark eggs!!

Hi Joey, do not use the torch on the egg as it develops into a pup too much. You will damage its eyesight. This is the same with baby birds, there is a point where the eyes develop and the torch will damage eyesight from a certain point. The ocean floor is dark and even reefs don't that much light exposure. Be very careful please and enjoy your new babies.

Some tips from an experienced reefer. 1- monitor your alkalinity. Even with a fish only tank, alkalinity will decline and PH can crash. 2- seed your tank with some mature live rock. It will help kickstart the coralline algae. 3- slow down. only bad things happen quickly in a saltwater tank.

Joey get a hatching cage for when they get close you don't want them hatching out into the jaws of your lion fish. But you also want them on their side to give the sharks more grow space as well as be able to hatch and breath in that Mermaid's purse or your going to loose them before they ever get the chance to hatch.

I think you need to clipp the eggs from filamentus part and rotate them time to time. In nature filamentus part attaches to corals , branches and rotates with water movement.

Hey Joey, I’ve grown these out before and I think it’d be best if you got a mesh breeder container kinda like the one they had at the store you got them from. If I remember right when they hatch they come out of the side that you have clipped closed so they won’t be able to come out as they are now. Also they’ll get eaten right away from either the snowflake or the lion as soon as they come out so the breeder container can create a safe wall between them. Also if you want them to hatch faster you can bump the temperature up to speed up their development.

  • @manticore387

    6 жыл бұрын

Yes. Not super likely, but yes it's a real possibility. They're pretty small when the hatch, and who knows what smells are released to the water from a rupturing egg sac... Joey, I highly recommend you build a small enclosure around the eggs to protect the babies when they hatch. You may even want to quarantine them in a smaller tank (or an in-tank enclosure) til they're eating and a bit bigger before risking them with the eel and lion. On another note... you might want to make sure the eggs are clipped a bit away from the magnetic powerhead and avoid using a magnetic glass cleaner near them. Some people report sharks being agitated/stressed by magnets due to their sensitivity to electric fields.

I'm worried for the baby sharks: I think you shd have attached the egg cases by the other end, where the filament bases still show; these filaments normally attach the egg cases onto algal laminae or other substrates. I am no expert, but I suspect the babies might try to emerge out of the ends you have clipped shut. Just a hunch, but worth checking out. (Also the CH in Elasmobranch is a hard K sound- as in other Greek words like bronchial or Christ.)

You should get a mesh breeder thing, it suction cups to the side of the tank but the one that is for baby fish and put the eggs inside so that way the lion fish or eel doesn’t peck at the eggs for any reason because they wouldn’t be able too and so when they hatch they will be in the mesh “breeder” is what some call it and they will be safe from being eaten.

When they are closer to hatching, do you think you could build them a smaller hatching tank with maybe 2 to 4 cameras set up all around the eggs. Where will they come out of the egg, btw? Do they hatch out of the bottom, top, one of the sides, or what? I have never seen shark eggs before or sharks hatching out of eggs before. It is going to be so interesting to watch and learn. You do know watching them hatch is going to make us all super attached to these sharks, don't you? I'm so excited to see how this works out.

A breeder above said that they are actually coral catsharks (A marmoratus), which are between 10 and 13 centimetres (3,9 - 5,1 inches) long at hatching, so the lionfish could definitely try to devour them. The eggs should be in a clear breeding box to protect the pups.

This is a grow out for the eggs. Just to have everything in 1 place. Eventually the sharks will be moved to hatch separately. I see no point to running 2 tanks for months just to do the same thing.

Why would anyone who knows Joey assume he plans to let the eggs hatch in the same aquarium? It's obviously just a temporary thing until setting up a second tank becomes necessary.

Just an observation looks like both the Lion fish and eel are stressed. Flow looks to intense for the lion fish. His pectoral fin appears to be out. And the eel swimming around like crazy is definitely not normal eel behavior. Eels like to have a nice cave to spend their time in. I think with slower flow and a nice cave for the eel they would both be much happier, but it's just an observation

They were added 20mins prior to this. This was all the same trip to the fish store. same day. I just uploaded them in their own videos. Flow is turned down. fish are settled and eating now. All structures are hollow for the eel.

It might not attack the eggs since they don't pose any kind of challenge and the eggs themselves may be to hard for him, but once a shark hatch, it's at the most vulnerable. Their skin being really soft making them a treat for bigger carnivorous fish, that might include the lionfish ... Do keep in mind this is just my opinion and logic combined with some facts... So this might not be 100% true.

When the sharks hatch they, should be, about the length of a person's hand and about as big around as a thumb at the head, and honestly much faster than the lionfish as well.

These one are a strange one in deed, in fact there was on at Belle Isle in Detroit that had eggs without any male in the tank. The stranger part to this is that the shark had not been near any males in over three years, still baffling as to how it happened.

Congrats on getting the eggs. I went through this process a few months ago (12/17-21/18) and I absolutely loved watching the process. I did end up manually hatching my egg about 5 days after the yolk had completely disappeared. The lil fella took about 10 days to finally eat (squid tentacle was the magic meal). Good luck with your new adventure.
