A MASSIVE thank you to James for letting me use his retro Peugeot road bike. I promise to return it better than it was before. There were a lot of lessons learned while making this video. For example, always read your coach's workout notes. roadcyclingacademy.com/

At least now you have the story to tell of "that one time when you ripped the chain ring off the bike on your high torque interval day"

Glad it didn’t turn out worse than it did. Looking forward to the restoration and attempt #2

Ryan won’t be happy about you trying to spit out an ad integration during an interval hahahahaha! That was impressive though.

😂😂 it was pretty obvious in the ride data too!
Yup, it would've been fine with all its chainring bolts, but hey at least you can just replace that chainring easy! I've folded a chainring in half as well because of that exact reason.. Had two bolts not tightened properly, and they fell out on cobbles (gotta love Belgium lol)
@MitchBoyer
Жыл бұрын
Oh man those must have been some ínstense cobbles! I think I’ll have to replace the front derailleur in addition to the big chainring. I’m excited to breath some new life into the bike and give it back to James (after a proper test of course 😉)
Cant wait to see the restoration! ❤

You should be proud of that torque demolition! I once saw a Dura Ace crank arm ripped in half at the pedal axle threads during a crit while accelerating out of a corner. It was unfortunate for the rider but an unbelievable display of torque

thanks , that was a harsh reminder that I really need to do a complete bike check before my next ride.
Not me thinking back to the time I used zip ties in place of chainring bolts on my fixie for a couple of months. No sir.
On my next video watch me bring this retro bike back to life using only eBay parts! 😅 The updated Franken bike… stay tuned!

I think I caught a 105 logo on the derailleur. I wonder what the most modern version of 105 is that’d be compatible since it is a Frankenstein it’d be a-okay!

Good eye! Yeah the rear derailleur is a 105. Not sure on the exact year. I’ll have to do some digging. It’s a 6 speed cassette
DUUUUUUUDE....I glad you were hurt. Sad to hear about the vintage bike.
Good thing you didn’t crash when that chainring broke 😮
As someone who was riding in the 80's, I feel those steel bikes would be fine. But as with any bike, it must be maintained. The safety brakes make me feel that even when that Peugeot was not that special. Cheers.

@@MitchBoyer Two things, one it makes me smile that James has used and taken his bike all over the place, I've done the same with my 1976 Gitane, and two, I'm about to get on that bike now and commute to work. Of course the only original thing on my bike is the frame.

@@garysladek9110 that’s awesome! I’m definitely not a “newer is always better” kind of person. Happy to hear you have a bike you love and have maintained. It’s inspiring!
800 watts on 3 ring bolts, not too shabby.
A *maintained* vintage bike will do just fine ;)
tfw your regular training bike is literally an 80's peugeot with a 54t chainring 😅 riding that cause I'm broke, and cause when I do finally sink a few grand into something current I'll be able to fly

These vintage bike/modern bike comparisons always irritate me when they're comparing a new, carefully maintained bike to a vintage bike that hasn't been looked at by a mechanic in decades. It's not that hard to bring a vintage steel bike up to like-new condition. It's not like a car. You don't have to use an a-frame to pull the engine and you don't need a machine shop to refurbish or make new parts. Parts aren't hard to find because there were no proprietary "standards" back then -- just English, Italian, French and sometimes JIS. All you need is a basic set of tools and a few hours. Replace the cables and maybe the housing, repack the bearings, grease and torque all the various bits and bobs and soon you'll have restored a forty year old bike to absolutely like-new condition -- at least mechanically. And that condition will be very good: the bikes of the 1980s were the product of a century of refinement and they should run as smoothly, quietly and reliably as any modern bike. Sure things have advanced since then. Materials are more advanced. Tires are better. Mass manufacturing allows metal frames to be welded instead of artisinally braised. Perhaps most of all our understanding of riders and how to optimize their performance is way beyond what it was in the 1980s. But a properly maintained 1980s bike can easily take anything you can dish out. Unless you're an elite rider, you're probably not that much stronger than riders were forty years ago, and even if you are an elite rider, bikes are always overbuilt. Even Eddy Merckx wouldn't have been able to bend the chainring on this thing if it had been put together properly.

Yeah I definitely think a restored bike/maintained bike will have no problem with these workouts, and that’s what I’m hoping to show in part 2 🤞 To be honest, I didn’t expect the bike to fail before hand. I was hoping to show that even an old, unmaintained bike, can do a lot more than you might think. I really wish I had done a proper inspection before the ride. Just replacing those missing chainring bolts would’ve resulted in an entirely different video. I hope the take away for most people after this video is inspect and maintain your bike. Hopefully I wasn’t too nuanced with it, but maybe I was. Still trying to find that line between entertaining and useful! Either way, thanks for watching!

@@MitchBoyer I think it shows that if you don't check the bike, you get the luck of the draw. I think if this had been an all-original garage queen bike that had been moldering away in storage you'd probably have been OK except for watts lost to a rusty chain. But the history of this bike is a red flag. Before it was put away, it had been constantly ridden and lovingly wrenched into a frankenbike state by an amateur mechanic. Amateur doesn't mean inexpert, and a Mr. Potato Head build isn't necessarily a bad one, but it doesn't take a lot of skill to keep a bike in a minimally rideable but not really safe condition. So I think there really is an important lesson here: always check over an unfamiliar old bike carefully before riding it.
@MitchBoyer

@@grumpynerd totally agree with the lesson to always check an unfamiliar bike beforehand. I was very lucky it’s wasn’t something worse. That’s for watching and sharing your insight!
